ok, so wait.. here is what I mean with this:
The first round pick that we traded, is likely to end up being like a 15th pick, or a 16th pick, or 17th pick or something like that. It could be as high as like 13 or 14. Regardless, I don't think the value of that pick should just be conveniently ignored. The 2011 draft, which was widely considered to be one of the weakest drafts in recent memory, saw a talent like Kawhi Leonard slip to the 15th pick.
There is always talent in the middle of the draft. Remember Casspi, we got him in the middle of the draft. What about Hickson? Cav's got him in the middle of the draft. The middle of the draft can have some serious talent, and there is going to be a year in the near future where we aren't going to have any interest in the draft, because our 16th overall selection is going to be owned by Cleveland.
Hickson better be the freaking Savior as far as I'm concerned. I don't mind dealing Casspi, he was definitely the odd guy out, and a guy with some name value, and trade value, and I don't mind it from that standpoint at all, but the No.1 pick is a very big concern for me. I don't see them getting our pick in 2012 or 2013, but they could still end up with a very nice pick in 2014 or 2015. And one of those summers, we are going to be on this forum talking about how J.J. Hickson was never worth all of that. It's totally conceivable that the Cav's could have our 15th overall pick in 2015, and Hickson isn't even on our team anymore because he wanted too much money and went somewhere else via Free Agency.
I'm not trying to say that this trade was a BAD thing. I'm just saying that the Kings payed ALOT to get their hands on J.J. Hickson. It seems like most people are downplaying the draft pick, because it's not something that is a known quantity yet, and we aren't going to actually feel that pain for a couple of years. Yes, that draft pick will likely be 2014 at the earliest and possibly 2017 at the latest. You can't really hope for the Cavs to get that second round pick, because if the Cavs get a 2nd round pick from us, that means we've had to endure some horrible basketball for 6 straight years. I think we just have to hope that the Cavs end up with like a 22 overall pick in 2014, the summer after the Kings made a surprising run in the playoffs. Of course, that 22nd overall pick will still sting a bit, unless Hickson is still on the Kings, and playing at a near All-Star level.
