I'm a sucker for good storytelling and a twist, and this movie was done so well that people are still debating it feverishly a year later. If you haven't seen it, it's showing on HBO this month, or you can hit your local video kiosk. Bottom line is that the plot was so good and the acting so spot on, it was immediately one of my favorites.
With the 3rd pick in the 2011 TDOS Tropical Island Video Vault Draft, Superman's Super Movie Lineup selects:
Inception (2010), directed by Christopher Nolan
"There's something you should know about me... about inception. An idea is like a virus, resilient, highly contagious. The smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define or destroy you."

Yeah, I liked Inception and all, but I thought it would last another few rounds. It's interesting, but nowhere near one of the best films ever. Just my opinion though.
I think this kind of draft is all about your personal tastes. My list will tell you a lot about me as a person. Might not win, but it will be my list, no one elses.
For my pick I’m going with David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr. I’m a big Lynch fan and this is his best work. I love the surreal structure and atmosphere of this film. It also has quite a few very funny scenes which keep the dark subject matter from feeling too foreboding.
Oh and it also has a couple of hot love scenes between Naomi Watts and Laura Harring which could come in pretty handy on a desert island!

I don't know how much discussion is allowed from outsiders in this earth shakingundertaking. I have seen roughly 3000 movies using Netflix and have given a one star raing to less than 5 and perhaps 2 or less. Mullholand Drive got a one star rating from me. I think I'll have to watch it again if only to figure out why I disliked it so much. It probably made no sense as that is what bothers me the most. I really don't remember.
Yes it's a very ambiguous and surreal film. It only has a faint outline of a conventional plot. It's the type of film you have to appreciate for the atmosphere and overall experience. People who require a film to have a logical, linear plot generally hate it, and David Lynch in general.
Sorry for the wait. Today was my last day of an 8 week clinical, now I've got an entire week off! I've been going back and forth with what to take to open up the draft, not entirely knowing what kinds of movies will be safe...I'm following the self imposed limit to not pick movies previously drafted, and I will try to conform to this restriction, even if there are a few movies that tug at my heartstrings. I decided to go with a multifaceted pick. This movie is our holiday staple, has music, comedy, drama, romance, relationships, and terrific acting. With my 1st pick I select:
Love Actually (2003)

Now I have a film to watch during the holidays, something to cheer me up, and remind me of family and home. Sure, it's not a manly film...so sue me. At least it has hot chicks!
This is tougher than I thought. I was going to draft one of my all time favorite films, <deleted> but then it occurred to me that something so unsettling and bleak might not be the best desert island entertainment. So keeping the desert island theme in mind, I'm going to stay away from films that seem too depressing or that deal with isolation. I’m already on a desert island, I got enough isolation, haha.
It's funny the different ways you can imagine this. I try to pick movies just based on which were my favorites because the island concept is fun but I think the point is to pick our favorites. Still, I find myself picking ones because I consider them rewatchable just because I'm imagining myself having to watch them over and over. It's hard to get out of that mindset.
Two things:
Two - I am in and out right now so I will just announce my pick as The Empire Strikes Back and do a write up when I get in for the evening.
OK, With my first pick, I'm going with a movie that asked the important questions:
Do you like movies about gladiators?
You ever been in a cockpit before?

Ever seen a grown man naked?

My entire draft concept last time around was precisely on that theory -- people were drafting Schindler's List and stuff, and I was all, "are you kidding?". I'm stuck alone on an isalnd for eternity. Entertain me.![]()
Hmmm, and why would I do that? Speaking of the series, please note that I chose The Empire Strikes Back, not Star Wars Chapter V: TESB or whatever revisionist renaming George would like to have placed on the films of the original trilogy. My laserdisc that I am hanging onto - it looks like this:Hm. Someone took the best movie of the entire series.
After this, do the same people draft again in round 2?
It's a snaking draft. Even-numbered rounds go in the opposite order.
