Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

#31
I think he means 5 "repicks" per drafter, or up to 100 movies from the previous draft.

Personally, since I wasn't in the previous draft I'm not sure it is really necessary. I guess if most of the participants are repeaters then it might make sense, but it seems there are only a handful that played last time.

In fact, if there are only 5 or 6 repeaters, I'd even say Bricklayer's original 5 repeat picks rule probably wouldn't be necessary either.

But in the end, I'm fine with any of these choices.
Ah yes, you appear to be right. My mistake.

#34
OK so that's settled. A 10th rule has been added stipulating only 5 picks from the original draft will be allowed per drafting member. Any problems or concerns with this ruling may be taken up with management (AKA Bricklayer)...As of now the rules are completed, and we only need 4 more signees before the draft can get underway. I'll look for an impartial board member to perform the randomizing duties once we get the full 16 participants. Ideally, the draft will begin by Friday at noon PST, lets call that a soft start date. Get your lists ready and put on your argh face!

I'm not really a fan of the new rule as I think it will greatly dilute the quality of the movies being taken, especially in the second half of the draft. I'd imagine some of the movies will be so nichey that a lot of drafters won't even have heeard of them. But I'll play along and see how it goes. :)

Are you kidding??? Nobody even took Ishtar or Battlefield: Earth last time! There are lots of quality flicks available! ;)

If you think that's an obscure movie, wait until you hear of some of the Irish one's I'll be breaking out in the last few rounds! Seriously, though, it's going to be difficult to win this draft considering most people won't know a good lot of your movies.

I'm back! Idaho apparently didn't have the interwebs as I would have liked, but I'm here, and ready to party.

Actually that's not what I meant -- I was just aiming at guys not repeateing their own draft lists from last time. But you guys carry on however you like, and don't come crying to me when you get stuck drafting Big Momma's House 2 in the 18th round.

I'm confused, it sounded like Brickie's decree was that returning players could only re-pick 5 of their own movies to prevent people from taking the same lists.

Now it's everybody can only pick 5 of the entire lot?

I will play by either rule set but seems the latter is overly restrictive, but that's because I usually find people's critiques and personal insights more interesting than when it is just an IMBD or Wiki link (and I vote accordingly). On the other hand... I do like my obscure stuff.

First you spoil the Magnificent 7 for me now you tell everyone my first pick.

Was there anybody else who voiced support for this change? It sounds like most who posted here have a mild preference to not use this rule.

Oh... and my lists are ready either way. My "obscure" ones aren't so much obscure as they are ones that most others think are too crappy to pick. That's a recipe for victory. Arrgghhh! ;)

Hey, lets not forget this draft is based on personal preference each individual would enjoy being stuck watching for the entirety of their miserable lonely existence on a tropical island. I for one, would enjoy watching Big Momma's House 2 in all of it's masochistic glory and ineptitude.

If the #10 rule for the draft stands, I would have to pull out of the draft, I don't think I would be able to conjure up enough movies for my list. I dont think ive even seen that many movies of high enough quality to draft if im only able to repeat 5 picks out of 320 movies from the last draft

I will voice support for rule #10. A few nights ago I dashed off a quick list of stuff I'd be interested in drafting, maybe 30 movies or so, and about 20 of them were drafted last time. You'd hate to see the same movies just shuffled around among different people, so I think this will make tings a bit more interesting. Plus, people will have to dig into their bag of tricks a bit and we might find some interesting stuff coming up.

Huh ... it appears I've inspired a controversy. Admittedly, I'm a bit of a film fiend and let my vanity drive me toward a personal challenge - but I really didn't expect everyone else to have that standard (or close to it) forced on them.

However, now that "rule 10" is upon us, I'm honestly ambivalent about it. The rule isn't going to change my approach at all. I also appreciate the fact it would offer up a lot more variety. Seeing the same movies picked over and over would get tedious and one of the more fun aspects of the previous draft was being introduced to new films.

With that said, it is unfair to arbitrarily restrict people who haven't participated before to only five of 320 randomly selected movies. Plus, selfishly, the more movies that are available to other drafters, the less likely one on my list will be poached.

Ultimately, I think Brick's original decree of limiting returnees to only five of their own previous selections is both fair and adequate. But if we can get 16 drafters to accept the more stringent rule, I would enthusiastically support that.

Oh, one more thing: have I correctly ascertained that Brick is pontificating on our behalf, but apparently not actually participating in the religion?

#48
After reading the debate with myself, my ambivalence has waned. I support rule 10 in its current incarnation. It'll make this draft unique from the previous one and add a bit more strategy.

(I'm still forfeiting my five selections)

Not having participated in the last draft what I really dislike about the rule is that it forces people to go back and look at those movies/lists just to make sure they aren't picking them, which in some ways could taint the draft more than just having everyone redraft their same list would. I won't have any problem picking 20 of my own movies but I don't really want to constantly reference the other draft either.

#50
How many returnees are there? I think it's a little restrictive, and we last did this four years ago so it's not like we're going to have the same exact movies again, but whatever's decided I'm good with. I haven't looked at the movies selected last time, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to participate even with the restriction, whatever it winds up being.

FYI... Here are the movies picked last time.

Note that I just copied from how they were posted in the draft list, so there might be typos or other anomalies (like "Lord of the Rings" in one place and and "The Lord of the Rings" in another).

Yeah, I agree with this. I also think the fun thing about this is seeing the tastes other posters have and if they're similar/different to your own, and restricting most of the films open to be chosen means that a lot of people won't even have heard of a good portion of the films chosen. In such a case, how can you vote for the winner? I'd also speculate that most posters will end up picking at least 5 movies that they aren't even particularly fond of just to make up the numbers. At some point (most likely after the first 6 or 7 rounds) there won't be much worry that your movie is going to be taken. It's also 4 years since the last draft, the memory of it isn't that fresh, and there are a lot of new participants.

So as you can see, I don't like the rule, but I'll roll with it if it's what the majority want.

There were 320 films selected last time around - if we restrict to five repeats per person, that brings us to 80 repeats + 240 old, non-repeats + 240 new films - only 560 total movies. The IMDB has over 25000 films with a user rating over 7.0 so I don't think the pool will be particularly tapped.

The best part is that there will be more opportunity to read a quick blurb about a movie you don't know, get intrigued, and check it out. Might find some new stuff you love.

Man, so many of the movies on the list last time were favorites. How about 7 or 10 from the list per person? I will work with whatever is the final decision, but I'd vote for a few more than 5. Guess it doesn't really matter though.

So, yeah... As someone firmly of the belief that these drafts have gotten less and less fun as the rules have gotten more and more intense, I'd like to declare my conditional interest in participating. If I'm limited to picking only five of my own previous selections, I'm in. If I'm limited to picking only five of the 320 films selected last time, I'm not.

To clarify my reasons, rather than just make a snotty comment and leave, I share pdx's concern about having to refer to the original list every time I want to pick and/or update my own draft list. Just way more trouble than I want to be bothered with. Having never made much headway in these things trying to go mainstream, if I participate this time I'll be intentionally skewing obscure and my own list likely wouldn't be affected by the rule no matter which way it goes, but 320 is a lot to take off the table right from the start. I also agree that it is unfairly limiting to the number of participants this time around who didn't take part in the first draft.

While I admire the purity and fervor of Capt. Factorial and Lowenherz argument, and given the fact that I too agree that this may help liven up a remix draft to prevent the shuffling of picks between the islands I do understand where Dime Dropper is coming from. Given the dissidence regarding rule #10 I am agreeable to rescinding this. Bricklayer's ruling would stand, but rule #10 would be modified to be the Bricklayer Doctrine for all repeat drafts...The Rule of 5s...only 5 repeat picks from YOUR previous lists in a given draft. All other selections are fair game if eligible. Draft members are free to self limit as a test of their individual movie knowledge, but placing this restriction on the entire clan may be a bit draconian. I will follow Lowenherz lead personally, and vow to try to avoid re-picking films, but by no means is this a requirement for all any longer. What say the masses?

I think that's a very good idea, but then again, I would! I don't want to ruin it for anyone, so if the majority want it the other way, I'm OK with that. I don't see what's stopping those who want to do it that way from just doing it themselves (which is what you're suggesting).

Seriously though, if you guys want to invoke that rule, don't let me stop you.
