Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

#92
I'm a sucker for good storytelling and a twist, and this movie was done so well that people are still debating it feverishly a year later. If you haven't seen it, it's showing on HBO this month, or you can hit your local video kiosk. Bottom line is that the plot was so good and the acting so spot on, it was immediately one of my favorites.

With the 3rd pick in the 2011 TDOS Tropical Island Video Vault Draft, Superman's Super Movie Lineup selects:
Inception (2010), directed by Christopher Nolan

"There's something you should know about me... about inception. An idea is like a virus, resilient, highly contagious. The smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define or destroy you."

Boo.

...These drafts are fun even when you don't participate. Hope my #1 movie (well, movie that I would've taken 1st, not necessarily my fave) goes soon

#95
Yeah, I liked Inception and all, but I thought it would last another few rounds. It's interesting, but nowhere near one of the best films ever. Just my opinion though.

I liked all of the movies picked but had no designs on any of them except Dawn and I thought that would be a mid-draft pick. Hopefully I'm not miscalculating how I value my picks.

I think this kind of draft is all about your personal tastes. My list will tell you a lot about me as a person. Might not win, but it will be my list, no one elses.

Yep, I did like Inception and it's one of my favourite recent films. Definitely would have been taken in the next round or two due to it's popularity. Not knocking the pick at all.

Sorry for the wait. Today was my last day of an 8 week clinical, now I've got an entire week off! I've been going back and forth with what to take to open up the draft, not entirely knowing what kinds of movies will be safe...I'm following the self imposed limit to not pick movies previously drafted, and I will try to conform to this restriction, even if there are a few movies that tug at my heartstrings. I decided to go with a multifaceted pick. This movie is our holiday staple, has music, comedy, drama, romance, relationships, and terrific acting. With my 1st pick I select:

Love Actually (2003)

Now I have a film to watch during the holidays, something to cheer me up, and remind me of family and home :). Sure, it's not a manly film...so sue me. At least it has hot chicks!

For my pick I’m going with David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr. I’m a big Lynch fan and this is his best work. I love the surreal structure and atmosphere of this film. It also has quite a few very funny scenes which keep the dark subject matter from feeling too foreboding.

Oh and it also has a couple of hot love scenes between Naomi Watts and Laura Harring which could come in pretty handy on a desert island!

I don't know how much discussion is allowed from outsiders in this earth shaking :) undertaking. I have seen roughly 3000 movies using Netflix and have given a one star raing to less than 5 and perhaps 2 or less. Mullholand Drive got a one star rating from me. I think I'll have to watch it again if only to figure out why I disliked it so much. It probably made no sense as that is what bothers me the most. I really don't remember.

Yes it's a very ambiguous and surreal film. It only has a faint outline of a conventional plot. It's the type of film you have to appreciate for the atmosphere and overall experience. People who require a film to have a logical, linear plot generally hate it, and David Lynch in general.

Ha, I guess that's me. Consider the other 2998 films I rated higher and there were some real awful ones in there so that gives you an idea of what at least a semblance of a plot means to me. I'd rather watch a Tony Jaa retrospective.

Anyway, I read some of the reviews and the recommendation of many is to watch it more than once. Many movies that have made no sense to me get a little clarification the 2nd time through.

Heh, what do you know. Never would have thought it would go in the first round of a nearly entirely male draft, but having seen that recently I would have to say its an excellent film and in my half baked and last minute draft scheme I was considering it for later in the draft.

Two things:
One - Rookie it is good etiquette to PM the next person up in these drafts after you've made your pick.
Two - I am in and out right now so I will just announce my pick as The Empire Strikes Back and do a write up when I get in for the evening.

I don't really have "favorite" movies, just a bunch that I like and would enjoy watching over and over again. So deciding on what to draft first is really about which movies I consider most popular and potentially dangerous. That's extremely hard to figure out, though, so hopefully I don't get myself into trouble.

Anyway, my first pick is:

The Godfather (1972)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068646/

It's a good movie, I can't help but watch whenever it's on, and it fills a lot of needs for my island.

P.S. PM Sent.

This is tougher than I thought. I was going to draft one of my all time favorite films, <deleted> but then it occurred to me that something so unsettling and bleak might not be the best desert island entertainment. So keeping the desert island theme in mind, I'm going to stay away from films that seem too depressing or that deal with isolation. I’m already on a desert island, I got enough isolation, haha.
It's funny the different ways you can imagine this. I try to pick movies just based on which were my favorites because the island concept is fun but I think the point is to pick our favorites. Still, I find myself picking ones because I consider them rewatchable just because I'm imagining myself having to watch them over and over. It's hard to get out of that mindset.

My entire draft concept last time around was precisely on that theory -- people were drafting Schindler's List and stuff, and I was all, "are you kidding?". I'm stuck alone on an isalnd for eternity. Entertain me. :)

BTW, as with Inception above, your first round pick is both bullet proof and:

:p

OK, With my first pick, I'm going with a movie that asked the important questions:

Do you like movies about gladiators?
You ever been in a cockpit before?

Ever seen a grown man naked?

NOOOOO. I think that was going to be my first pick.

Yeah but the island thing is just a schtick. This is really about our favorite movies. Or whatever we want to make of it.

And I was actually thinking about my pick the first time you posted your overrated picture. But that's what can happen in the first round or two, especially if you're like me and don't have any real favorites.

I'll say the island theme works for the GF movies, I watched part 2 the other day when I finally thought I had cleared the nearly four hours needed to do so and then wound up needing a nap. Island with no wife or kid, its a GF marathon.

Now, as for Love Actually, true story, my wife begged me to see it with her for weeks, months maybe. In the end I thought it was charming enough to maybe be #8263 on my best films ever list while she was not impressed. So, I guess what I'm saying is it was ok. But putting it on an all time 20? Sorry guys...

Hm. Someone took the best movie of the entire series.
Hmmm, and why would I do that? Speaking of the series, please note that I chose The Empire Strikes Back, not Star Wars Chapter V: TESB or whatever revisionist renaming George would like to have placed on the films of the original trilogy. My laserdisc that I am hanging onto - it looks like this:

Please note the lack of Roman style numeration or even the Star Wars brand. This came out in the mid-90s which is why there are no human stars that King George would have to pay royalties to, so well after the revisionism went full kick.

So let me say a few words about my first pick. I will reiterate what Spike said, "best movie of the entire series". Without a doubt. It's so good that even in 2011 George Lucas won't be able to mess it up on the upcoming blu-ray. Sure he may re-color the thing, fix a few visual effects or bad composites. But he won't make Han shoot first or throw Jar Jar into the victory party, or have angsty Anakin replace the original actor. Because Empire is too damned good.

Now I love the first movie, and that would be a solid second pick for anyone. But Empire upped the ante in so many ways, the Hoth scenes were just fantastic. Snowspeeder was the last cool vehicle in these movies. Who didn't want to lasso an AT-AT, perhaps the coolest enemy transport ever? It introduced us to Yoda and Lando. The doublecross. Han in carbonite. C3P0, the original Jar-Jar, ripped into pieces. "I am your Father". Yeah it kinda ends on a downer but I know how it all ends and I won't have to watch any stupid Ewoks.

"No fighting in the War Room!"

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

My favourite Kubrick film and probably in my top 5 ever. A monster performance by Peter Sellers who plays three of the main characters, including Dr. Strangelove who's one of the most hilarious characters I ever had the pleasure to watch in a movie. Brilliant satire on the cold war going along with a good dose of black humor.

I know that the Tropical Island theme is a bit of a device, but I'm not sure there's a big difference between a favorite movie, and one I'm able to watch over and over and over again. The funny thing is that, while I own this DVD, I may not ever have actually watched it due to the frequency at which the film pops up on TV. Still, I can't imagine not having access to it at will. It's a comfort just having it on the shelf, and I'm happy to grab it here first.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Edit: added trailer (fan trailer - superior to theatrical trailer, oddly enough)
