Tropical Island Video Game Draft -- Pending playoffs

Since we usually have time to kill between picks and this is the most worthy thread for such a topic, has anyone else seen this?

I'm really not sure how to feel ...

I've seen it and I hope and pray that it is fake, or some badly put together internet movie that will never see the light of day, because its terrible. Absolutely terrible.

I agree.

They need to hold out until Uwe Boll is available to direct. :D

P.S. Now this i supposed to be a hoax. Query: who has the kind of cash/resources to put togeteher such an elaborate and expensive hoax? Looked damn professional, up to and including CGI. Noticed IGN in the credits sheet at the end -- could they have bankrolled it?

It was completely fake.

The company, Rainfall Films, made the trailer for some sort of event a year or so before IGN used it. IGN found it, thought it would be a great April Fool's idea that tons of people would believe, and boy were they right.

I'm sorry, but I was laughing the second I saw Link and thought it was obvious it was fake. Well, that and I was on the hunt that day for April Fool's jokes since April 1 is always the funnest day on the internet every year. Closely followed by April 2.

Anyway, here's that company's site. They have a few cool things on there.

Goodness. It's almost my turn.

I just don't know what to do with myself.

Don't worry, it will be another 2 days until I can pick. It's always at least 2 weeks before my picks return.

Why the hell it takes 14 days for 15 people to make 2 picks is still beyond me....

I always fall for April Fool's jokes, just too trusting I suppose, but must say that was one of the best I've ever seen.

And gotta say I'm rather relieved :D

See, I was right. Been almost 24 hours and still no pick. ;)

I didn't get the popup telling me I had a PM when I logged on again...Thats twice in a row for the video game draft...Yet the popups still always came for the rock band draft...
Sorry for the delay.

Dino Crisis (Plus Resident Evil 3 Bonus Disk!) --- PS1 --- (1999)

This game was described by the people who made it as "Panic Horror." Think of Resident Evil, but instead of a living dead staggering towards you, you have a ferocious charging raptor ready to fly through the air and rip your face off. The experience really was one of panic and it changed the way you had to play.
I remember a funny story with that screen shot right above. Me and my friend were playing the game at like 1 in the morning (at this point we were like Freshmen in high school)...Regina (the main character) is talking to the scientist in a completely calm fashion and BOOM!!~ When the T Rex popped though the window my friend spilled his beverage all over himself and half my room...Good times.
And coming with a free bonus disk of anything doesn't hurt. HAving something else to play no matter the shortness of it can't hurt when being stuck on an island forever.

Yay! My turn!!!

Sly 2: Band of Theives -- PS2 (2004) -- Had a hard time picking this one. I knew I wanted to take something from the Sly Cooper series, but didn't want to burn three picks to get all of them. And, to be honest, I think the gameplay in the first one is my favorite, but the upgrade system and pseudo open worldness that was introduced in this game adds a bit of depth and replayability, which is important given the tropical island qualifier. As is the case with many of the games I've picked so far, this is an incredibly unique platformer (with a bit of stealth thrown in) with a small but dedicated fan base. It's got a great cell shaded/hand drawn look, good characters, and a funny (if a bit cheesy) story that's easy to care about.

Woohoo!

OK, before I post my picks, I want to make a prediction. It will be Friday, October 10th when my turn comes back around. Sad. :(

Anyways:

First pick is one of my 5-year old son's favorite things to play, and I like it too - MarioKart for the Wii. He's getting better and comes in first on occasion, especially on certain maps. We have lots of fun with 2-player mode.

Personally I like the remote and nunchuck combo, he likes the wheel. ;)

My second pick is Frogger for the arcade. I don't know how many quarters I put in trying to get that little frog across the street and river....

As I'm getting ready to pick yet another PS2 platformer, I'm starting to get a bit worried about variety. But... gonna just go with it.

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy -- PS2 (2001)
-- Unlike several of my recent picks, this game is on my list for its gameplay alone. The story on this one is silly, and there's a cutesy quality to both the humor and the game design that I really can't stand, but it's still a great platformer. Naughty Dog, Insomniac, and Sucker Punch Studios are all from the same "family" of game designers and they all launched successful new series at roughly the same time -- Jak & Daxter, Rachet & Clank, and Sly Cooper respectively. The other two series grew to be much better in the long haul, but purely in terms of platforming, without counting Ratchet's weapons or Sly's stealth elements, this game may be the best of the three. However, while those two series were good enough that it was difficult for me to pick just one game to pick, this one was a no brainer. Despite favorable reviews and ratings, all of the Jak & Daxter sequels have suuuuuuuuuuuuuucked.

I like continuity, sooo....

Dino Crisis 2 --- PS --- (2000)

If this game was the same as DC1 I wouldn't put it on my list...Lucky for me, it is a whole nother game with a completly revamped system and completely different gameplay styles. Dino Crisis 2 took the game from a 'Panic Horror' scene and made it more of an arcade style action shooter. Lots and lots of dinosaurs. Make combos. Get points. Buy new and exciting weapons from various stations placed throughout the island.
Not to say you didn't have to worry about Mr. T-Rex popping through at some good times! Just had a different aura around it.
And beating dinosaurs to death with Regina's new cattle prod was always great!

This is bad...another timeout. PM sent to Lowenherz. Let's try and make it at least a full round without a timeout.

Let's also try to get through an entire election process without a negative attack ad. :)

All right, onto the draft and it's time I picked up a fighting game. And since I'm not a fan of the genre the only series the appeals to me is this:

super_smash_bros_brawl.jpg

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 2008 - Wii

So many favorite Video Game characters (except Mega Man who is STILL criminally absent despite the inclusion of Third Party characters and those exclusive to Japan) even as a non-fan of the fighting genre, I can't help but enjoy this.

There is a lot of nostalgia attached to the first installment picked several rounds ago, and this carries on that legacy while improving on several functions as well, including the single player adventure mode.

Ultimately, this is a bit like Golden Eye as an ideal multiplayer game, but is still very solid with me all by my lonesome on the island.

Sorry I got a PM Friday night at 8:00pm, was out, Saturday came, was out all day, and now its Sunday.

Make up pick inc...

The intro of the hit stick here made this one for me. 2009 is good, but as it was taken I needed a Madden on my island.
