Tropical Island Video Game Draft -- Pending playoffs

I remember the back of the video game mags had 100s of adult titles that surely are equally as bad as Custer's Revenge, and yet Custer's Revenge is held up as the "ET" of that market segment.

Neverwinter Nights 2 (2006) -- PC

Review
Sat on this for a long long time now, ever since the first one was taken. Bet you did not even know there was a second one. Was a funny thing, because in virtually every way, the 2nd one was a step up. Better toolset, better graphics, better everything...except the one thing that made the first one work: the community. Maybe the best online community ever put together -- thousands of game designers working in their spare time to improve the original game. Thing was that there was so much work done, such a community on the first one, that it was kind of burned out by second. Who wanted to start all over?

In any case though, get the original game of course, but the toolset is again the real value here for a forever island -- even more than the first one, do anything you wanted. Infinite elevation changes, smoothing, painted terrain (hundreds of choices, + mix & match), hundreds of trees and bushes, free scaling of anything and everything...given a little time I could design just about anything. Horribly complex of course, and chased away a lot of people with that, but I have all the time in the world now. I was hoping to post a pic here of an Elven Tree City I built that I was quite proud of -- looked really spectacular. But still have not recovered from the patching/updating error that kncked out the toolset for me, so am just going to have to go with a couple of my early doodles soon after getting a hold of the toolset. Will give you an idea of what is possible, even if they are not great in and of themselves.

See, I didn't find NWN2 as enjoyable as NWN1. The camera bugged the hell out of me. (I did hear they fixed it in a later patch, which admittedly was past when I played it).

However, picking a game with a toolset is almost cheating, mostly because I wish I had done it. ;)

Thief: The Dark Project (1998) - PC

Review
And to complete my twain this time through the snake, some more cleaning up of near misses by others. Had three of those -- Baldur's, Neverwinter Nights, and now Thief. I was surprised, given the general preference of this crowd, when somebody tapped into the Thief series earlier in this draft. Surprised, and a tad alarmed -- was always one of my favorite series, and it practically invented the entire first person sneaker sub-genre. Was a real tragedy when Looking Glass Studios, along with Sir Tech, went down. Some of the more original players in the business.

In any case, fortunately for me the other person took the wrong damn Thief. :p Thief II, while a good game, was a step down from the first one, and so I am going to snag the original now and spend eternity sneaking around and robbing people blind. You gotta have patience to play these games, but check that review (or any of them) -- it was a real late 90s gem, and universally lauded by fans and critics alike.

I am very glad to see somebody pick this up. This is an excellent series, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Have to disagree with you saying the original is better though. Admittedly, the first few missions ARE better (LOVED Bafford's Manor and Cragscleft Prison), but I found that the rest of the game wasn't "thief" like. Thief II, however heavily involved breaking in to someones mansion (First City Bank & Trust & Life Of The Party IMO are the 2 best missions in the series) and stealing their prized possession or eavesdrop on their conversation. Both games go out on a bit of a limb with the story, but Thief II stayed the closest to the ground

What can I say? I enjoyed my Sega Genesis as a kid:

Incredibly easy. Incredibly addicting. I also enjoyed the fact that you can kick your friends off the cliff.

Two things

1. I cannot believe you picked this! This was going to be my next pick!
2. I also, differently, cannot believe you picked the Genesis version over the Arcade version!!!

1. Ha ha!
2. Well, I spent most of the time playing the Gen version, and I think it has extra levels not found on the Arcade, so :p

Ultima VII The Black Gate - PC 1992

Sorry about not picking. Had been real busy and hadn't been watchign the drafts. I have a car one to do as well.

The first in a couple Ultima games which lead to the creation of Ultima Online. This was one of the first Ultima games to use the UO engine. Very fun game.. Love it..

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 ~ Gameboy (1993)

One of my favorite handhelds. Ever. So much fun. So much room for activities. But seriously, the viking helmet is one of the greatest platformer upgrades ever.

Never got a PM

Anyway, on to my next pick. Maybe I just have bad taste in games, but this is another of my favorite series of games that nobody has touched yet. Either of the 4 games would do here, but I decided to go with the original.

I just love this game, and this genre. Amazing graphics, great story. If you haven't played this, I highly recommend it.

These are actual screenshots from the game itself, not from in-game videos:

Wow, I just realized I have all but two of the GameCube picks in this draft. The Cube's ridiculously underrated selection of games continues.

On an unrelated note, time to take an arcade pick.

San Francisco Rush 2049 (2000) - Arcade

Just a great all-around arcade racing game. Had every feature you could want, tons of tracks, tons of modes, 8 players vs at the arcade, plus that futuristic feel and that SF Rush gameplay that was the trademark of the series. Countless quarters have been spent amongst myself, my friends, and random strangers playing this game for as long as possible. You know, until the snotty-nosed, annoying eight-year-old behind you constantly commenting on everything, ooh and awwing at every pixelated collision, finally got too hard to ignore and you begrudgingly got up to go play that game where you underhand toss little balls into target holes angeled at the wall across a small alley. Whatever game that was.

Because I really like original gaming experiences, I select Wii Fit with Balance Board for the Wii.

The idea of exercising while playing a video game blows my mind... I play this at home and it gets me on it every day... so fun, such a different kind of video game experience...

That was one of the ones I was also hoping to fall a bit more.

Nice pickup.

BEST GAME EVER! :D:D Love mine!

Pick #15, and here come the worms. Family favorite and instant classic, this cartoon war parody brings instant laughs, lots of replayability, and comic relief to my island. Hotseat multiplayer mode allows for some really great large casualty battles too.

I knew from the start that i'm going to have this game on my Island. I played this game while I was growing up, and it is one of my favorite games ever.

There was a time when I had a strategy and a set draft board list for this one. But I have since lost the list, forgot what was on it, forgot that I had one to begin with, and then forgot about this draft entirely.

So I guess I'm shooting from the hip here on out.

Battlefield 1942 - PC - 2002

Generally known for being a cooperative based multiplayer first-person shooter and there are quite a few flaws with the single player mode, but it's still enjoyable re-enacting famous WWII battles and doing so while driving around big tanks and flying fighters.

And it's gotta be at least on par with Golden Eye (wink, wink)

I'm sure there are expansions for this one I'm neglecting, but eh. Really, it's just nice to pick up a qualiy FPS this late in the draft. What round is this anyway?

Maybe a little early, but I needed this on my island. I love the car level after repelling down the shaft.

Do I get old school cred for this one? ;)

TOTAL old school cred! It was on and off my list several times and I eventually would have taken it if some other titles hadn't fallen my way. Ultimately couldn't decide if it being one of the hardest games I've ever played was good or bad.

P.S. I'm glad you enjoyed the "car level" (more like hover-bikes), because I occasionally wake up screaming from the memories.

In fact, I found the little slice of gaming heaven:

Since we usually have time to kill between picks and this is the most worthy thread for such a topic, has anyone else seen this?
