Yes, Connery was cheesy, but it doesn't matter. He was good.

I like Craig's Bond as well, and yes, some aspects of CR were a bit much, but I really liked the way they re-invented Bond with that film. Not so many gadgets and more like a Jason Bourne - a bad-a**. The Bond gadget thing just got stupid-crazy for a while. Was it fun and funny? Yes. But it also just got to be a bit much at times.

I remember watching this movie at my adult cousin's house when I was a kid... what a cool movie... It has a classic man vs. machine/megacorporate corruption/evil story. It feature not one but two awesome robots and was one of the most violent films I had ever seen (originally rated X for violence!). Just an action classic... brilliant, exciting, and lots of bad guys getting what they deserve... justice, ROBOCOP style!

I needed another comedy on my island and I've always liked this one. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane were brilliant, but I especially like Hank Azaria's character Agador (Spartacus) who couldn't cook and never wore shoes. A very funny movie, and I'm happy to have it on my island. Seems like the natural pick after To Kill a Mockingbird, right???
 
Dalton's Bond is underrated. He was true to the character, I think people really disliked that coming off of Moore's over the top Bond. He didn't really get the best material to work with either. Still I find him better than the worst of the Brosnan and Moore films - which is about half of their work.

I was really wondering why this one was still out there and if I would be able to snag it in the last round or two. Guess not....

Good choice! Lots of funny stuff in there - I like some of the commercials, etc, that add bits of funny to the film (kinda like the one-line references in Demolition Man). Verhoeven also threw some of that into his Starship Troopers and Total Recall, IIRC. Also the ED209 was a good touch. Kinda dumb for it not to be able to climb stairs, though, as it was made for urban missions where stairs are fairly common.... :rolleyes:

I thought ED209's design flaw with the stairs shows man's imperfection and the problem with robotic/computer based solutions/AI... they have a rigid set of criteria and cannot compensate for every scenario like real intelligence can.

March of the Penguins (2005)

Anyone who knows me well knows that if the rules of this draft were a bit different, my list would look something like this:

1.) Planet Earth
2.) Blue Planet
3.) PBS's Evolution series
4.) Life of Birds
5.) Life of Mammals
6.) etc.....

My TV is on the Science Channel, Discovery, Animal Planet, National Geographic, etc. most of the time. So when I get the chance to pick a feature film that is a science documentary, I'm doing it. March of the Penguins, an Oscar winning film for best documentary, displays the hardships faced by emperor penguins in Antarctica as they fulfill their life's work...reproduction. It features brilliant narration from Morgan Freeman, which may account for a lot of its popularity in the U.S. I love it not only as an amazing natural drama, but also because it offered the opportunity for movie-goers to actually learn something when they went to the theater. It has everything good fictional dramas have...an interesting plot, struggles and hardships, conflict, intrigue, sadness, joy, and redemption (and other stuff, too, but I'm not very poetic).

And penguins...who doesn't love penguins?
 
You know...now that I read the rules again, I'm not sure I can't pick Planet Earth...

Lots of questions, though...would I have to pick one of the episodes? I'm fine with it not being included in this draft...I just want it to be off the table for others as well...

Yeah I noticed too about Denzel -- unfortunately while I consider him an excellent actor, I rarely like his films. Oh there are some good ones, but rarely ones I would watch repeatedly.

Also agree about Man on Fire though -- that one was fun. And cold. :p

This film features Johnny Depp, Winona Rider in the lead roles and is the quintessentially Tim Burton film complete with a Danny Elfman soundtrack... a brilliant, bizarre, dark and touching movie. I mean, c'mon, the guy has scissors for fingers... brilliant, brilliant, brilliant and should have been picked WAY before now.
 
^Also inspired one of the most interesting adult movies I've ever seen.

And since Tim Burton = grrrrr!!! (with the exception of one film I can think of), I think I woould bring the porn first. :p

OMG I have been scarred.....


However, to save posts....can I add my .02 on Denzel now that I've caught up with the boatload of movies taken since I commented about penguins, the NON edible lovability part of the equation that is...

I'm in the group who likes Denzel as an actor but can't think of many films he's done that I would watch more than once...except Remember the Damn Titans which I missed out on....:mad:
 
Man on Fire...that's one I need to see. Keep saying I would.

Looks like I'm up. At this point in the draft it is becoming more and more difficult for me to decide.

Spy Game (2001)


A very cool and smart action movie with two solid actors. It plays the flashback game, as most of the movie is told from the past from the point of view of Redford's character CIA agent Nathan Muir as he explains his relationship due to Bishop being caught in a Chinese Prison trying to break out a woman. The past tells of how Muir came to know Pitt's character, CIA operative Tom Bishop. Ultimately you see how they grew close and how they grew apart. Ironically this all happens on the day that Muir is supposed to retire and he ends up spending his retirement savings and outsmarting the CIA to bust Bishop out of a Chinese prison when the US government was going to let him die. I think I've spoiled enough for those who havn't seen it and might think about watching it. If you can get over the two main characters not aging over 16 years (time span of movie) I think you will enjoy it.

Hm, I don't think I'm going to be able to allow it. You are right in guessing that the only form it could be picked in would be episode by episode, as was the precedent set earlier during the LotR mini-controversy.

The problem with even allow that is that Planet Earth is not even a movie. It is a TV documentary series with 11 episodes that were first ran on Discovery in early 2006 and were quickly turned into a DVD package. But, as a little hint, I'd suggest to just keeping checking the Lounge for upcoming drafts where you might, in fact, be able to pick your precious Planet Earth :D

on a side note, i have the DVD, but mines some silly UK version with a less-than-Sigourney narrator :(

My pick coming up soon..
