Here's another possible idea...for whatever it's worth.

We don't draft genres. We declare them (secretly) at the beginning and build our casts around the genre we have selected. Then, at the end, we can have our secret genre revealed and we can show how all our draft picks fit together ... and meld into the stated genre.

I'll be honest. If we have to choose genres, I'm going to pick one in the first round for the simple reason there are a lot more actors out there than potential genres...

:)
I am on board with this proposition.

Sweet. That makes a full 16! Now we just need to figure out the genre dilemma. I like VF21's secret ballot idea too, but it would mean that there is no limit to the amount of certain genres selected...

Assuming we're going to have to pick the genres up front, I don't get the purpose of making it secret until the end. Seems like the upside to picking the genres is letting people in on your thought process as you pick personnel. This is kind of the worst of both worlds.

I thought it would be fun NOT to know each other's genres until the end. That way we could have something else to figure out...as I stated, part of the end process would be explaining how each of your picks fit into the particular genre. But hey, this is all just tossing out ideas. It is Brickie's draft, so any choices are his...

Some of these people are cutthroat. If they KNOW your genre right from the beginning and figure you to be their prime competition, I could easily see them grabbing that perfect character actor just for spite.

But again, these are just minor details.

I would also imagine it would allow us to have repeat genres so not just one person is doing sci-fi, one person doing horror, etc.

I totally hope my movie idea isn't to rated R for this forum. It's kind of dark.. But I got perfect people in my mind that would play the parts well.

I think another plus to this would be that in the process of drafting, you may not get all the people you would like, but still make them fit into your genre. If you don't pick up front, that leaves it open for changing it later. I think the idea of commiting to a genre, even if the other players don't know what it is, will make you stay on one path and not get wishy-washy later.

I like the idea, FWIW.

The only thing I don't like about VF's proposal is the notion of doing it first, because I have, probably, five utterly unique concepts for a screenplay, and all five of them are one hundred percent dependent on the lead actor. And I don't have two ideas in the same genre, so if I picked a genre, and didn't get the lead actor I need, I'm screwed.

Of course, there's always the "decide genre at the very end" option... It might be fun to draft with a particular script, cast, etc. in mind and then find out you have to create a "chick flick" when you've got all action actors.

I really like the idea of this draft because there are so many possible variations. I may just select Victor Mature and Irene Dunne to remake Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

:p

I'm going to have to pull out. I'm going to be away from a computer for about a month, so I don't want to bog things down. :(

Don't let him out, Brickie... There's already too much of this "Hey, my life is getting in the way of my internet" stuff going on.

IF you decide on secret genres, I'll be happy to record everyone. I can keep a secret. :D

I'm pretty sure that Bill Curtis proved that you can even get the internet in Alabama... what's wrong with you, anyway?

Didn't he say something about moving to Colorado? I KNOW they have internet there...

Depending on when this starts, is it possible to make a special request that I be last pick? Got the most important exams of my life this week and next, so I really won't have the time if it starts before the end of next week, at least.

It might work out fine, in which case the randomizer will be fine, but if exams are still ongoing, would I be able to request that special position? Don't think it'd put me at any advantage!

Well, I'm going to be chaperoning a trip to Puerto Rico...if you must know. If I have to choose between beach time and piña coladas or Kingsfans....well, you know I love you all, but, what can ya do?

In all seriousness, I'd probably be out 3 rounds, and I don't want to screw things up for everyone else. I wouldn't mind staying in since I have a really great idea, but maybe we can work something out, like letting me select from the dregs whence I return for those rounds, if it's OK with everyone else.

If u need a replacement for Spike I can give it a try. Do not know how good I will be at this but I will try my best.

edit: opps did not see the previous post disreguard my post then.

Well if you get randomized to pick #8 or whatever, and just don't have time to get to it until its pick #16 and so we skip you, you still end up picking at the same time right?

But I'll PM everybody who is having time issues once we're finally ready to boot this up, just to see where they are timewise.

Actually, you're right.

And I should have the time to check in briefly to let people know to skip me if I don't have the time. That way, I won't be holding anyone up.

Hey, I stepped in for the Dream Team Draft and had to make three picks at once. Although I was eliminated in the first round of playoffs, I still had a lot of fun. Putting together a team around Karl Malone and Isiah Thomas, however, was a bit too much, even for the great and powerful VF21.

I'd love to see you stay in!

AleksandarN - Maybe you can be first alternate or understudy in case someone has to drop out down the road.

:)

Do we have a draft order set yet? The Heroes/Villains draft is ending soon (Tuesday)...

What was the decision regarding the genre dilemma?

I'm sure Brickie will be on top of this as soon as the heroes/villains thing is over...

Awesome. I need to get my first pick in before I leave on Sunday. Get me a high pick! :D

I just sent this PM out to all would be participants, but I'm going to post it here too since I do not care how the message gets out ;):

Ok, this draft is going to start up in the next few days, so this message is serving two purposes. First I want to confirm that everybody is still going to be able to participate -- I know a couple of you had potential conflicts. If there are still issues, hit me back with a PM (no need to tell me if you are definitely in -- I'll just assume unless I hear from you).

Secondly, this message is to tell you to check out the thread in the next 24 hours. I am going to be adding a poll (public so only the votes of people in the draft count) to settle some of the rules questions. Once that is settled, I'll do the randomizing, and we'll be off.
