Tropical Island Make-Your-Own-Movie Draft
Welcome to the Tropical Island Make-Your-Own-Movie Draft. Actually, this draft doesn't have much to do with tropical islands. Although it could, if for instance you wanted to make a sequel to Castaway or a movie version of Lost or some such. But in any case I just decided to call it the Tropical Island Make-Your-Own-Movie Draft so that people would instantly know that yes, its another one of these pass the time drafts, with a similar format. What format? This one:

The Rules
The Task: draft the actors, director and genre of your very own movie! Use lots of exclamation points!! Yay!!!
The Flourish: in the final round, give your movie a name, a plot, brief character descriptions, and an MPAA rating. Anything else you want as well. You want to make a trailer, feel free. You want to describe it via a faux review, feel free. You want to submit a 200 page footnoted script...eh, ok, knock yourself out.
Overview: This will basically be a 12 round draft, consisting of the drafting of 1 director, 8-9 actors, and possibly 1 other crewmember (optional, teams with the crewmember will have 8 actors, those without will have 9). In addition, Rnd 9 will consist of a short 1-2 line description or tagline of the movie in progress (consider it a trailer), and Rnd 12 will consist of a full name, description, MPAA rating, etc. as you introduce your movie. Before the first round each player will pick a genre from the genre list below (see genre section). See Draft Chart below for overview.
The Actors: as with the Hot Babes draft last year, the actors/actresses here are timeless -- you can choose any actor/actress from any era (including animal actors if you want), and you can specify them from any point in their careers. You want young badass Clint, or old grizzled Clint? Your choice, and maybe largely dependent on the role you have in mind for them. You want to create a movie starring nothing but the hottest babes (or dudes) of all time, well, they can all be in their prime. In order to qualify any actor/actress must have a page at imdb.com with at least one acting credit.
Note: One actor and one actress will be designated leads (assuming that there are both men and women in the movie). But this can be done at any time, and changed at will.
The Director: self explanatory I think, although they too can be at any point in their careers if its significant.
The Genre Requirement: Players will declare a genre from the genre list below before the draft begins. At any point before Round 7 (i.e. during their first 6 picks) a player may use one of his picks to switch to a different genre rather than on an actor/director/specialist. After Rnd 6 whatever genre has been declared is immutable.
Other Crew: in place of any one actor a player may (it is optional -- they may take an additional actor instead) substitute one movie specialist -- i.e. a writer, a composer, a special effects guy etc. For these purposes a musical group or duo will count as a single person, as will a well known special effects company.

Genres:
Action/Adventure (includes Kung fu etc.)
Comedy (includes rom coms)
Thriller
Mystery
War
Western
Drama
Romance
Sci Fi
Fantasy
Musical
Horror
1) generally things that legitimately straddle two genres can qualify as either one -- its a guide to your endeavors, not that strict. Not buying a musical horror mystery western though.
2) if you have a more specific genre and a specific idea -- i.e. Historical Epic, feel free

Original rules/signup:
The Rules
The Task: draft the actors, director and genre of your very own movie
The Flourish: in the final round, give your movie a name, a plot, brief character descriptions, and an MPAA rating. Anything else you want as well. You want to make a trailer, feel free. You want to describe it via a faux review, feel free. You want to submit a 200 page footnoted script...eh, ok, knock yourself out.
Overview: I am thinking of a 12 round draft -- 9 actors, 1 director, 1 genre, and the final round for the naming/descriptions. We could go more. We could go less as well, although I think there is more amusement in drafting almost all of the characters -- people can travel down to grab favorite character actors, bit parts, cameos etc. as well as the main roles.
The Director: self explanatory I think, although they too can be at any point in their careers if its significant. *Ahem* John Carpenter *ahem*.
The Genre Requirement: I think it will add a bit of spice if people have to draft their genres as well as their actors -- do you nab the favorite actor first? Or do you secure a preferred genre for your vision and then add actors around it. After we know how many people will be in the draft, we then have a list of that same number of genres (or maybe a few spares just so that the last person isn't forced into a genre they loathe). I am thinking that the more popular genre's (action, comedy, etc.) should have multiple genre's available -- will also create some nice head to head competition for the best personnel for those areas. So if there are 12 people, maybe you have available 2 action, 2 comedy, 2 drama, 2 fantasy/scifi, 2 horror, 1 musical, 1 kung fu, or whatever. We can discuss genre's etc. if this gets going.
Additional possibilites: if people think there is any other aspect of the movie which would be amusing to draft rather than just come up with at the end, we can do that too. Perhaps there might be only a certian number of R ratings available, a certian number of PG-13s, a certain number of PGs etc. Perhaps we could draft budgets, adding some strategy whether to take the $200million budget in the early rounds, or take the Oscar winning actor instead and risk ending up with only $30mil to spend on the movie. Whatever -- lots of possibilities as long as people are interested.

If there's enough interest this one will be all about originality. You want to remake a classic with a better cast? Go for it. You want to make an Oscar winner? You've got 80 years of Oscar winners to play with. You want to make the ultimate kung fu flick? A teen sex comedy (no porn though -- sorry)? You want to make a movie that should have been made but was not? A sequel to a popular franchise? Are you upset there was no sequel to Serenity? You can change that. You want to boot Lucas from the Star Wars franchise and take over the helm for a 7th film? Its all possible.

Potential Starting Time: after the Heroes/Villains playoffs are completed, and once we have a good load of participants.

I am sooooooooo there:).

We could make a round were the setting(s) is/are drafted as well, or it could just be posted in the write-up as there might be a free for all for New York, San Francisco, and Chicago...

This looks down right awesome. Problem is when it comes to the plot writing part I would sit here for hours trying to think of an idea and only come up with something eerily similar to another movie...

How is it all about originality when you go on to say that we can go ahead and copy other movie ideas...

Well I didn't say you had to -- the limits are your imagination. Wanna remake Howard the Duck with 100% Oscar winners? Go for it. Want to make a Godfather 4...as a musical? Sure thing. Want to do your own thing entirely? That works too. How people vote on the results will be up to them -- the originality is in everybody getting to put together thier own vision.

Ok, so its original in the sense of "Do ANYTHING you want".

Oh no. I want to be a director/screenwriter.

I've got the most important exams of my life starting next week.

What to do?

Bah, I'm in. Hope I get the time to do it properly, but this is an opportunity to put some of my ideas to the test.

Fascinating... I have a few questions before I commit, though:

1. Do these have to be self-contained movies? In other words, if, for example, I wanted to present a project that couldn't be contained in two hours, could it be broken up into two movies, like Kill Bill, or three movies, like The Matrix, provided you're using the same cast/director throughout?

2. If there are a limited number of genres available to be drafted, how are the genres classified? Does a romantic comedy count as one genre, or two?

3. Is there really a rating limit?

1) I think just for fairness they would have to be single shot. Of course if you have an idea for an epic 3-part series I don't see why there would be anything stopping you from describing what would come in the future, but we'd only be voting on the one movie actually made.

2) that's open to discussion. I like the genre idea, but am open to suggestions. We could have a separate romcom category, or we could just call them a subset of either comedies or romances so you would have to take a general comedy genre to have a romcom (or romance). And if you Slim make a romcom I might jsut have to eat my hat. And I don't even own a hat. But I just may have to go out and get one and then eat it. :p

3) that was just thrown out there as an example of something that could be done if people thought it would add something. As of right now I am only committed to actors, director, genre. But we can expand to other things if there is general demand for it. Anybody for drafting key grips? ;)

Yeah since this is filling up quick, I will go ahead and reserve my spot. I am in.

....Even though I have no real vision for where I want to go with my film just yet.

Absolutely. I'm going to have to put mind-blockers on to keep GGG out - we've had similar tastes in the past. Slim too, but since it can't be a porn, I think I'll be safe.

...oh, wait. *sets up mind-blocker*

I am quite sure that I will regret this as music is more my thing and I always fail miserably in those drafts. I am in.

Do not expect any 200 page footnoted scripts from me.
