Trade for Rondo??

“I’m just going to tell you, and I don’t like the word ‘sources,’ but from the people that I talk to, there is a huge deal in the mix,” Marshall said. “[Celtics president of basketball operations] Danny Ainge will say, ‘No, no, no.’ [The trade is ] for not just Rondo, but other players on this team, to a team out West, the Sacramento Kings.

Now, anyone around here (Boston) will gladly blast Marshall as a source. And he has an axe to grind with the Celtics organization (speculation on my part, but how he was let go was interesting to me) ... still. He's been close to the C's for a while. Could easily have sources over there.

I'm NOT saying its true. Just saying ... smoke.

Isn't it true that all the issues around trading our 1st rounder can be removed by granting rights to switch picks rather than give the pick?

For example:
if the 2014 pick is between 4-12 we switch 1st round slots with Boston. If that doesn't happen, same deal in 2015, etc. until the pick is conveyed.

This way there is no possible way we would could trade away 2 future 1sts in a row since we'd only be trading slots with Boston. I don't believe the rule states that the 1st has to have originally been ours. I certainly could be wrong here...

No, that should be true. Of course given Boston's originally goal of being awful until they realized the rest of the East was even more awful, us offering to switch with them wouoldn't seem to give them much of an edge.

Being a small market team, to get stars here we more than likely have to do our work when the value is low and there's some risk involved. Rudy was that way as his value in Tor took a hit. Webber was that way with what went down in Wash before he was traded. It's much tougher for an organization like ours to trade for a star when the value is high. Tougher as in, we've never done it outside of arguably Owens for Richmond. Rondo, coming off injury is in a similar boat until he proves he can produce and that might be where PDA comes in.

Multiple league sources have been telling CSNNE.com for months that no team is going to make a "legitimate" offer for Rajon Rondo until he returns to game action. CSNNE.com

Well, what if we're willing to take a risk and make a legit offer before he returns to action? That's a calculated risk a small market team would need to take. If he comes back and impresses, there will be no shortage of suitors and the competition for Rondo theoretically skyrockets.

I, btw, fully support taking the risk and would have no issue moving any of the names/picks thrown around.

Two other factors I'll throw out there not mentioned although I don't know if they make any difference. One, Rondo is from a small town outside Lexington. He might not be against coming to a city like Sac if it reminds him somewhat of home. Two, his agent Billy Duffy is a Bay Area guy. His office is about 10 mins from me. He's right down I-80 and smack in the middle of where our owners/FO personnel live. Vivek, still in the Bay Area. Duffy is 10 mins from where Mastrov lives. 10 mins from where Chris Mullin lives(I know his whereabouts as he plays ball at my gym and still lives down here which I won't comment further on to respect his privacy). Mitch lives in this area as well. I wouldn't at all be surprised if Duffy and our FO are having discussions. They're all local to the East Bay.

This is sourced to the previous Yahoo article posted by VF in post #124 above. Just pointing out that this isn't any more smoke than we already had a while ago...same smoke. We've got multiple independent smoke arguing against it (Amick, Jones, Blakely from two different sources).

Though I wouldn't be terribly shocked if somehow Rondo made his way into an Asik deal and we threw in some salary to make it all work.

id like to know who the multiple other celtics were. If wallace isn't involved then yeah i could see more.

Slight addition, but we can't trade any number one pick except the most current one on draft day until the Cleveland trade restriction is removed.

Technically, were not actually trading the pick on draft day, but the player we draft. Semantics I know!

Here's my take on this.
Though I'm not a huge Rondo fan, Rondo would be perfect for this currently constructed team and his addition would certain be the 2nd-to-last piece in a potential championship starting 5. (Still need that shotblocking big)
It's abundantly clear that PDA is looking to pick up as many 'risky' assets as possible and if I were him and trying to get an 'elite' PG, Rondo would be the man I'd be looking at.
If Boston is actually considering moving Rondo, then I'd do pretty much anything (sans Cousins/Gay) it required to bring him on board.
In an absolute perfect world we'd get Rondo, keep this year's 1st round pick, barely miss the play-offs while keeping our pick, then draft our starting shot-blocker which would allow us to go into next year with probably one of the most balanced championship-quality starting 5s in the league.

So to me it's a no-brainer that there might be rumors flying around because PDA has shown he's willing to take risks to get assets and Rondo would be perfect. We'll see if something does materialize.

I'm not expecting that something will actually happen, but considering what we've seen thus far, if PDA can get a deal worked out I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen.

Got to make this happen. Id rather keep McLemore but truth is he’s going to need to be included as well as IT to make this go through.
Obviously this trade makes us very average in the interim but the future would be incredibly bright. I wouldn’t have any issues with personality clashes between Cousins, Rondo, Gay.
All 3 are winners.

I think 2 out of the 3 young assets (IT, Ben, 1st) plus other pieces to make it work would be a reasonable risk. All 3 or even more picks included and I'd walk. I just don't have enough confidence that Rondo would put us at a contender level and/or stay past next year to throw away the most valuable small market assets we possess. I think Rondo has a ton of positives but there are enough question marks (injury, attitude, ability to play without 2-3 HOF's) to make me uncertain. A tough call but its the way I'd personally lean.

Sigh. Don't know why people keep putting the 1st round pick in trades.

THE KINGS CANNOT TRADE THEIR FIRST ROUND PICK !!!!!!

I'll say it again, since it keeps being brought up. We cannot trade a future first round pick until the year 2019, or until we've resolved the issue of the pick we owe Cleveland. You cannot trade 1st round picks two years in a row, and since we don't know when Cleveland will finally acquire the pick we owe them, there's no way of knowing what the date of the following year is. However, I don't think there's any truth to this rumor at all. Everything I've read about the Celtics, including in the Boston newspapers, infers that management is anxious to see how Rondo melds with the current team before making any decisions on his future with the team.

That's not to say that the Kings and Celtics haven't talked to each other, I just doubt that any serious conversations have been about Rondo. I'm also not a big fan of Rondo's, but he would be a giant step up in credibility and talent, and would probably fit in next to Cousins and Gay. I just don't think there's any merit to this rumor.

It's been a long standing rule apparently inserted to prevent GMs from inadvertently if not stupidly destroying their own team. Unfortunately as we are finding out, these protected picks hamstring our GM. If it's the worst problem we have, we are lucky.

Yeah let's trade for Rondo so he can get wide open looks for our guys who can't hit them! :(

I'm right there with you in terms of frustration, but a lot of those looks tonight were not wide open. Even so, that's an easier problem to fix. If a player can't consistently hit an open jumpshot and they're not a defensive specialist, then they're not an NBA player and they get replaced. Outlaw has been a bottom of the barrel producer for a long time now so if he's playing big minutes it's a problem regardless and McLemore still hasn't found himself as an NBA player. Ben continues to be a concern, but getting a PG who'll look for him in his spots would make a difference. And you could say the same for Williams and Gay and even Cousins. A lot of those traps DeMarcus found himself in tonight, for instance, could have been avoided by getting him the ball either closer to the basket or at least at the top of the key so the sideline isn't acting as a third defender.

We have some really good pieces here but we need a glue guy who'll take on the role of keeping everyone involved in the offense. Hasn't happened yet this season.

I saw another scenario. We keep Thornton and send it,jimmer, bmac, and Thompson for rondo. No Wallace and no picks.
