Riley Thinking of Trading Pick?

Would anybody be willing to trade... say... Kevin Martin for the #2 pick? What kind of potential does Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose have? I REALLY think the Kings should try to get that pick if they could..

I'm not sure how appealing Kevin Martin would be to a team that already starts Dwyane Wade.

How about in a hypothetical where Kevin Martin could go to a third team and a good piece from them to Miami?

Yup, i would give up Martin for sure. Maybe they would want ron and soemthing else? I have no clue but we gotta find a way to get that pick.

Yes, very interesting. But I am not at all sure we have the goods to get that pick without giving up Kevin, and if you do give up Kevin, you have to be sure the guy you are getting back is the real deal. Gets especially tough when you have Denver perhaps dangling Melo, and what about Chicago? Coming off the disastrous year how ballsy of them would it be for them to scoop up a stack of that young, but disappointing talent and ship it off to Miami to end up with BOTH the #1 and #2 picks, both Beasely and Rose in one haul?

In any case, Miami seems to have shown minimal interest in Ron, and I have assumed they are scared of him, and with Ron having that damn opt out clause it just makes things so hard. Hate those stupid things. But here was the sneaky thought I had just glancing at salaries.

The Bribe: we take their worst contracts

Ron Artest $8.5mil (ender)
Sheldon Williams $3.4mil (ender w/ team option)
Quincy Douby $1.4mil (ender w/ team option)
#12 pick

Mark Blount $7.4mil (2 years)
Marcus Banks $4.2mil (3 years)
#2 pick

-----------------------

If a team were not entirely terrified of Ron Ron, its not an entirely unreasonable proposal. Keys upon giving them a huge patch of cap room next year, meanwhile clears out a couple of failed young guys for us, and of course the Ron conundrum. And only the Banks contract runs beyond our 09-10 cap room summer. But as mentioned the Heat never seen to have shown much interest in Ron, even when it made sense -- apparently preferring to even take a chance on Ricky Davis. And I remember a couple of years back when Banks was on the market, it did not seem like Geoff was terribly interested their either. But of course all of that is just ends to a means. We want the #2 pick. The Heat get a proven talent and cap relief. Hey, why not? ;)

I think Riley is hesitant to draft Beasley when he would make Marion redundant (at least offensively). Miami would draft Rose in a second if Chicago takes Beasley though and I think that's probably the most likely outcome. Rose is the hometown kid in Chicago, but they desperately need someone who can score and Beasley is as close as you'll get to a guaranteed 20 and 10.

I think it's funny that Riley mentions Kevin Garnett specifically as a can't miss superstar because he clearly wasn't considered that at the time of the draft or he would have been taken first not fifth.

Riley probably thought he was, but then again Miami did not have the top 5 pick that year.

No. If we're going to trade Martin, we better be damned sure we're getting someone better.

That would be the idea of course -- a true superstar. Still far better to get your future #1 without having to give up your future #2 however.

realgm is the source?
they probably got it from here:
http://www.miamiherald.com/592/story/542123.html

Which has these parts:
Heat president Pat Riley created a buzz after Tuesday night's draft lottery when he strongly suggested Miami would trade the pick if the right deal came along. At least five lottery teams picking behind the Heat -- including Seattle, Memphis, New York, New Jersey and Sacramento -- would have interest in acquiring Beasley if the Heat is serious about making a potential draft-day trade.
and
Memphis, Seattle and Sacramento all have needs for a low-post scorer

I would make anyone on the team available for the pick...

If we could just acquire a pick 5 - 9... then we could package Brad with Ron with the pick, take back some contracts. It's a lot more appealing than trading up with our own pick.

I wish he (assuming it was Beasely) was just a little bigger, just to be sure. Will be a player, but when it comes to top level stardom, he's more the size of a Kenyon Martin/Shawn Marion/Antawn Jamison than NBA megabeast size (Duncan is 7'0", KG 6'11", Dirk is 7'0", Pau is 7'0" etc.). Nor does he have big shoulders or a barrel build to become a Boozer/Brand/Randolph hulk that will just toss you around. I'd chase the pick hard and cross my fingers, but hearing he had hit a late growth spurt and grown 2 inches would make me a feel a lot better in so doing.

I think I can gauge Riley's thinking on this one; as a criticizer_of_Pat_Riley's_methodology_during_free_agency_in_years_past, he's always enjoyed the quick, athletic, versatile guard/swingman type; he's drafted Dorrell Wright, he's put his fingerprints on Mo Williams and Charlie Bell during last year's free agency, and he traded for Shawn Marion. It's no secret that Riles wants Rose in this draft, because he fits the prototype of what he's looking for; I've read Chad Ford's article concerning OJ Mayo and why Riles might overlook Beasley just to get Mayo, because all he wants is an athletic/versatile guard to pair next to Wade. His obsession doesn't reside in skilled forwards, he just wants an athletic guard to put his fingerprints on. I've never got the impression that Miami ever wanted Beasley; yeah, he's an athlete, but the reason he's drafted 1st is his outstanding skill set and offensive ability, with the great bounce and athleticism being an extra component. Rose is an athletic speedster pass-first defensive minded point guard, all at once.

Riley's definitely got trade pieces in his hands. Ricky_Davis. The aforementioned Shawn Marion. Dorrell_Wright. I don't think that's enough to trade up, as the Bulls like Rose, but they can afford to trade down if they want Mayo.
