Official celebration for Martin downtown Aug. 29 - 4 p.m.

We wanted you to be among the first to know that the Kings and Kevin Martin have agreed on a contract extension in principle

Please join Joe and Gavin Maloof, Geoff Petrie, Reggie Theus and Kevin Martin for a celebration rally following the official announcement in
Downtown Sacramento

Wednesday, August 29
4 p.m.

Corner of K Street and 13th Street
In front of the Esquire IMAX Theatre

We hope you will join us for the celebration!

Tell all your friends!

GO KINGS!

I don't know why but it feels weird to me that there is a celebration. I mean I'm all for Kevin and the Kings long term but.. I dunno, just seemed weird to me.

We had a celebration for Musselman. lol

Seems a little weird to me, too. And it seems especially weird to be having it downtown at 4 p.m. on a workday...

Yeah, this is what I would consider to be...um...overkill?? A 'celebration'? I remember being at the celebration for the re-signing of C-Webb, and I don't mean any disrespect to Kevin, but that was a reason to celebrate...that was C-Webb, that was $123 million smackeroos, that was 8,000 of us jamming into Downtown Plaza for that, at the height of our contending for a championship...this doesn't even compare, IMO...they could have done just as good of a job for this at Arco in front of the local media. I doubt there will be more than a couple hundred people for this 'celebration'. Weird...Oh well. *shrugs*

Um, maybe they just want to have SOMETHING to celebrate? I suggest you all stay at home (or work):D
Well, if they had actually planned this at a time that most people WEREN'T working, like say on a weekend, maybe more people would be going to this.:D 4pm on a Wednesday?? I'd be there, but the majority of people dont get off work until...let's say...FIVE O'CLOCK! lol

AND most of us don't work or live anywhere near downtown!

Looks a bit sad and desperate, but hey, what's new in Kingsville. Maybe they can present him with a giant gold #6 while they are at it. The appropriate place for a ceremony would be in Zanesville, where he's pretty much the hometown/smalltown hero and would actually draw a crowd.

I think the timing (Wednesday) may have more to do with him going on a trip to Africa soon. But it will mean a light turnout.

I'm sorry they are putting Kevin through this.

I agree, Cal-Kings. It just seems like it was thrown together very quickly and scheduled for a time and place that will pretty much guarantee a light turnout. Just another example, IMHO, of how the marketing department just doesn't get it.

Downtown Sacramento in the middle of the week in the afternoon on what is looking to be one of the hottest days of the year?

I am very, very happy Kevin got his contract extension but the "celebration rally" concept just makes very little sense to me, especially considering the time and place.

Not to mention that it's going to be 103.....

I know it's a "dry heat" but count me out.....

Somehow, I think if a little more thought had gone into this, they could have turned it into some kind of tailgate party in the Arco parking lot to welcome Hawes, Moore and Theus and celebrate Martin's new contract. If they did that - like on a weekend - I think they might have a much better turnout.

I hope there's a nice turnout but I certainly wouldn't count on it.

They want people to get excited about something since there is nothing else to get excited about. They've totally botched this offseason.

I know our Kingsgurl is going to be in attendance so hopefully she'll post some pictures.

:)

I used to have this job where every month we'd update a database and ship it off to our customers on floppies. Everyone in the office from computer programmer to analyst to the owner actually took part in the shipping process at the end of the month and then we'd kick back and eat a pizza.

Signing Kevin Martin was pretty much the no-brainer move of the offseason after draft day. They did their job. A 4pm party on a Wednesday reflects this, its their pizza day.

I do actually like the tailgate party idea though.

Ok, I'll stay at work since its like 103 degrees right now. You take one for the team or should I say "board" and take pictures while all of us enjoy the nice air condition home/office.

ick... that must be fun. Only 88 here in Portland but I expect wifey will be complaining about the heat when she gets home.

I'm going w/a fellow Kings fan buddy! It's 99 degrees at 2:30pm on my backyard thermometer in the shade, but no telling how hot at 4pm downtown. I'll take my digital camera and try to get some good shots. Oh, I'll be the 6'5" 50's dude and this is a good time to break out my old Kings #24 Theus jersey wearing it over a tie die tee. Say HI if I see ya there... GO KINGS!!!

I'm glad people are going. I hope he gets a big turnout and knows that if it were possible, more of us would be there.

I actually think the timing does have to do with Kevin leaving for Africa. However, as a former downtown State worker....

Unless there is some big even going on over a weekend, 4PM on a weekday is probably the busiest time possible at that location (maybe luchtime). There will be a lot of people just getting off work at 3:30 or 4:00, catching light rail, stopping for a drink, doing some shopping before they go home, etc. At the very least a lot of people won't have to make a special trip down there.

So they may attract onlookers just by the timing of the event. For Kevin's sake, I hope they have a decent turnout.

It was just across the street for me, so I attended part of it with some co-workers. Kevin Martin, Spencer Hawes, Mustafa Shakur, Geoff Petrie, Joe Maloof, Gavin Maloof, Slamson, and a bunch of cheerleaders were all in attendance signing whatever memorabilia people had. They also gave out small posters, thunder sticks, cones, and t-shirts.

The crowd was basically nothing in comparison to the CWebb thing, but honestly I preferred it that way. It was really easy to go up to everyone in attendance and get their autographs. I stood in line for maybe 5-10 minutes total.

It was insanely hot, yet there Kevin was in an expensive suit. He was constantly using his handkerchief to wipe the sweat from his face. When someone suggested he take his jacket off, he replied, "My tie's too short." :p

Wonder why no Ron Ron or Bibby...

;-D
Kevin's a good kid and a good player, and probably one of only a few reasons I continued to watch the Kings last year. (And he is a kid, lest we forget.) Just not sure if he's reached his potential. If last year is what we can expect for the next few years, then I feel we slightly overpaid for him; but if he hasn't yet reached his potential and continues to improve, then we may have taken advantage of him (in the relative world of pro sports sort of way).

We went and enjoyed it despite the oppressive heat. My buddy and I each got a free Kings tee shirt tossed our way - easy since it was a small crowd of about 150-200. Spoke with Reggie Theus about our former glory days hanging out together around town when we were both early 30's. Will try and post some pics if possible later. Low key Geoff Petrie spoke first and introduced new head coach Reggie Theus. Typical Reggie he did not want to hog the lime light almost immediately bringing on stage his assistants for more applause. Gavin spoke enthusiastically for awhile asking for back-to-back GO KINGS!!! cheers - the first one wasn't loud enough for him. Joe then took over for some more words with Kevin Martin finally introduced for his usual fairly reserved speech. All in all it, was well worth the 20 minute drive over and back.
