i'm not a sold on ray as some people here. i saw a couple fast breaks where he had tunnel vision and got blocked when he had players running with him. also he was going up against tony douglas more than curry so i didnt see this great defense everyone was talking about. now im not saying he's a scrub. i think he did well for a 2nd rounder, but im not crowning him starting pg. i still think IT is better and want to see what vasquez can do.

what i really got out of this game is we really need a back up center. chuck did ok but i dont want him getting that many minutes if cousins is in foul trouble or out due to other reasons.

oh yeah and i really wish we got iggy :(

Seriously there should be no excuses for Cousins any more. He got paid star money, he has stable coaching/front office/ownership. He needs to come in and give us the 20-30 points a night and lead his teams to wins. He looks better on defense, but the same old self on offense, bad shot selection, frustration, stupid plays.

I wonder if he will ever be truly held accountable of his play?

Dude. 1 pre-season game.

If McCallum blossoms at PG and it looks like he very well could - his 6'1" advantage over 5'9" IT may mean the later becomes trade bait. Of course, we thought Jimmer was trade bait but so far that's fading.

To be fair, the Kings office have said they are fielding calls but Jimmer isn't being actively shopped. I think the FO is in a stand-pat mode right now unless someone offers them a starting caliber SF for some of our depth.

I don't think anyone is crowning him a starter. For a second round pick, he looks like a steal though. Tony Douglass is probably the best PG defender in the league and he stayed composed and set up his guys, drove in and got to the line and showed solid defensive technique. At worst he will develop into a solid backup PG in this league.

Yeah, its funny how when the Iggy saga was going down we all thought we were close and were broken hearted when he chose GW. Looking back at now, why would he have chosen here over the other locations after him (and no, Vivek's 3.0 wasn't going to get it done)

The only positive conclusion I come up with for this game is that the Kings were very good in their fastbreak defense. Sure, the Warriors got some layups off of turnovers, but the effort was there all night to get back on D. I did see some good defense on the Warrior guards from every guard we put out there. (McLemore looks like he could eventually be a difference maker on D). The three position looked pretty bad; the 4 was meh, and Cousins was non-starlike. IT can make plays, but they are going to need more than one playmaker. Hopefully, Vasquez and IT can be on the floor at the same time to make plays. It's the first game. The process continues.

Rewatch it and keep in mind it was his very first NBA game. Sure, there were times when he tried a little too hard, but for the most part he showed a lot of potential and a pretty good court sense.

Oh for sure. I'm not saying he was garbage out there, he did really good...and we'll see more of what he can do in the future. But based off of what i've seen so far, his game reminds me of that one on one garbage we have seen with Evans, Salmons, Thomas, Outlaw, Cousins, Thornton..ect.. I want to move as far away from that as possible. I don't mind starting an isolation player or two... but I do mind when there are no play makers on the floor to control them.

GV is a high turnover guard, but if you go look at the NBA assist leaders all of those guys are near the top of the league in turnovers as well. It comes with the territory.

Vasquez had a 3 to 1 turnover ratio last season, which is considered the benchmark for a PG. So I'm not sure what your talking about. There's no doubt that a player that handles the ball more and passes the ball more, is also more prone to turnovers. But I'll take his ratio any day of the week.

IT looked a little like a headless chicken out there IMO. But then again, many of the Kings did. I'll be watching closely to see if IT actually learns how to be a facilitator, because that's what we'll need if he's the starting PG. If he's coming off the bench it's a different story. He made two very nice quick passes in transition, but other than that I felt he was forcing his way to the rim and just throwing it to random guys in traffic after leaving his feet.

Was pleased to see McLemore hit a couple of shots. Chuck Hayes looks like he's been working on that little floater.

As for Cousins ... I know it's only one game but to be frank I was not happy with what I saw. Same old body language whenever calls went against him, and his lack of a post game was very evident against good defensive guys like Bogut. What worries me is that in all 3 offseasons he has not committed to working on his post game. If you see the media day interview with him - he very clearly hasn't been working on a go-to move, and simply said he's been working on his all-around game. To his credit, he's in good physical shape, but that's really not going to be enough for him to be the superstar we know he can be. The great players recognise their weaknesses and work on them. Cousins is extremely skilled for a big man but if he doesn't develop a post game teams will easily shut him down with big guys like Pekovic and Bogut.

No question about it. And Vasquez is not out of control turn over machine - far from it.

Only 5 players averaged more turnovers per game than Vazquez last season. Those 5 were all stars.

To be fair, his assist/TO ratio was very good (2.85) much higher than other high TO guys.

what happens when the majority of your team would be "better off the bench as a spark plug"

And that is the problem with this team. They're all, with a couple of exceptions, good enough to be rotation guys on most teams.

30 wins though. That's the most likely answer. And endless complaints from fans and players about playing time. There just aren't enough mins to go around.

Cousins needs to cut out all of the fadeway jumpers and needs to post up more...
He needs to use his half hooks which are money but refuses to ever use ,it's the most simple and unblockable shot a guy his size and length can have it's just head scratching he does not use it or attempt it as many times as he shoots low % mid range shots.

Marc J. Spears @SpearsNBAYahoo
When asked how many offenses he’s been a part of as a King, DeMarcus Cousins said: “Actually this is my first one.”

Now that's funny! Does he have someone writing material for him or is he really that funny?

The thing with Vasquez is that he's long had some of that flashy latin hero stuff to his game. Or to ground it in Kings history, some JWill to his game. He likes to go for high degree of difficulty passes looking for the spectacular alley oop. Going all the way back to college he's been prone to pull up for long hero shots. He's got plenty of floor general to him, but many of his turnovers and forces are of the completely unnecessary variety. In other words, dumb. If Malone can tame that out of him we'll be far better off.

Couldn't agree more with this. It's now Year 4 and there is no half hook or other go-to move in the post. To go to the next level, Cousins must learn that move. Hopefully, he continues to practice on it during the season so we can see some progress in the low post. What's mystifying and frustrating is that Cousins is gifted in his coordinated footwork. And he has very good hands. I just don't see why he doesn't have a low post move after three years. Until he's very comfortable with a half hook, or whatever other move he wants, he's not going to be in the All-Star category. I also agree that he looks like he's in the best shape of his career. I saw positives on defense because of it.

I have no idea what we'll do. Coaches fall in love with guys like IT all the time. The hungry guard who talks a big game and puts up the nice numbers without necessarily guiding the team to a win. I could see Malone falling for it, easy.

And honestly, IT might not be the wrong move. He was certainly the wrong guy when Evans was here, but now .. we don't know yet. Nothing would surprise me, though. IT was fine tonight, but I thought McCallum played a more appealing game to me personally. We'll have to wait and see how Vasquez plays.

I have my doubts that Chris Paul could have guided the Kings to victory last night. This team can't rely on one playmaker to get it over the hump. It needs two or three guys to spread the pressure around.

The most disturbing thing I heard last night was from Jerry Reynolds when he alluded to some conversation in the Kings' coaching camp about whether McLemore was a two or a three. Haven't I heard this before? Do we have to go down that road again? Please, please, no.

Isaiah was his usual self, made some tough shots and looked good scoring. His facilitating was only based off when he couldn't get his shot apart from a couple of nice passes to lead the break. I like Isaiah, he's fearless and is the type of character you need. But he's really more suited to a role off the bench where he could easily be a 6th man of the year candidate.

McCallum was solid and should make it in the league. However I'm not as convinced as some of you guys are based on that performance. He was solid, which is obviously encouraging, but dribbles too much and really struggled finishing inside, though he did get to the line.

McLemore was solid. Very smooth jumper when he doesn't force it, just effortless. Extremely quick, and the extra spacing and lack of attention is clearly going to benefit him as opposed to the summer league. Looks like he can make some plays defensively getting in the passing lanes. Blocked a couple of shots according to the box score, which I don't really remember, as well as a couple of steals, which I do. On the negative side, his handles are clearly still a weak point, though you couldn't reasonably have expected him to dramatically improve that aspect in such a short time. Not a creator off the dribble. Forced a few shots. Solid first game for him.

Cuz forced a lot of bad shots and struggled against their bigs. Got called for some silly fouls. He usually starts off sloppy, not really worried about it. His defense was better, especially early on.

Mbah a Moute played some good defense during his limited minutes.

That's pretty much the only notable stuff I took from the first game.

This is my view also. He had one of the better nights amongst Kings players.

Cousins, not good. Thompson OK. Thomas, himself, good and bad. McLemore, rookie game with moments of encouragement. And then there was Thornton, Salmons, Mbah a Moute, Hayes, Outlaw. Paterson showed some. All this from someone who listened to the game on radio.

We're there any positive signs on defense? Couldn't get a feel from the radio.

P. S. Read some positive comments on our defense in above posts. Thanks.

Just read through this entire thread. I think it's cute people still think Jimmer is going to make an impact. Even Tim Tebow can't find a job.

I went back and watched the first half again, and man - some of these announcers drive me insane.

Chuck Hayes is one of everyones FAVORITE players. Really? Really? Ok. Good luck with that. He can only defend a select few players in the league that have a post game and cannot shoot over him. Thats effective on like .. 10 players in this league? 15? No offense. Can't rebound, and I don't see the 'leadership' he was supposed to bring. We could have had Cole Aldrich for nothing.

And I'm fine with Hayes as a 5th or 6th big, but the way the announcers gush over him kills me. He's not that remarkable.

The backup center thing is such an easy issue to fix. Fix it.

I noted that too, and it just has to be ballhandling related.
