One more defense of McCallum - He was playing (mostly) with Chuck freaking Hayes, Pat Patterson, LRMAM, and Ben ... none of those guys can handle the ball. Yes, he spent a lot of time dribbling the ball around on offense, but who was he supposed to give it up too? none of those guys can create their own shots and like I said, none of them can really even dribble.

McCallum had 5 AST playing with that crew and 1 turnover all while being forced to handle the ball almost exclusively when he was in the game.

I was impressed, and I have NO issue over analyzing one preseason game. That's what this thread is for. Of course, opinions change and develop over time, all of that is fine - but so far, so good.

Keep in mind also that RayMac was used to being the main point of offense at U of D, might take him some time to acclimate

I'm waiting for someone to give list of good point guards that don't dominate the ball. I can almost guarantee that a team that doesn't have a pg that has the ball the majority of the shot clock, doesn't really have a pg worth talking about.

As was stated, when Ray was playing with the 2nd/3rd team, he handled the ball more. When he was in with Cousins in the 2nd quarter, he moved the ball quickly. When nothing materialized, the ball came back to him. He was doing his job.

Fair point. When the team needs scoring, the pg needs to score; when there are guys out there who can score the pg needs to get them the ball in the right spots. Time will tell with McCallum. My question on him isn't if he can pass and handle adequately. It's whether he can score enough to keep teams honest. If he's not a serious scoring threat, teams will eventually figure that out and play him for the pass.

I agree with this analysis. Also, I'd go a step or two further. Not only is it preferable for Cousins to "catch and go" in the block, it's also preferable to have him move through the paint, hit him on the move, and have him instantly shoot or pass (See SA and Tim Duncan). Moreover, what Shaq has said about Howard applies to Cousins: Get your butt down the floor on offense before the opposing center, plant it in the paint before the opposing center can set up, get the pass, and nobody is going to stop you.
agree 100%

Getting to the line as much as he did showed he is enough of a scoring threat. He is aggressive doing what a pg should do, attacking the middle and then moving it for an assist or scoring / drawing a foul.

From what we have seen so far he does exactly what you want out of a roll playing point guard.

Which also means he had a skill set of getting contact and fts. Some guys can get to the rim but don't know how to draw contact to get to the line
