KINGS OPEN 2012-13 TRAINING CAMP ON OCTOBER 3rd in COLORADO SPRINGS

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., Sept. 7, 2012 -- The Sacramento Kings will kick off their 2012-13 Training Camp on Wednesday, October 3rd at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, beginning with a 10 am practice. The Kings will practice twice a day (10 am and 6 pm) from Wednesday, October 3rd through Sunday, October 7th, before returning to Sacramento on Monday, October 8th.

“It’s important to get away to a place like Colorado Springs to continue the bonding, building and growth of our team,” explained Kings’ Head Coach Keith Smart. “The players did an outstanding job this offseason of coming together as a unit on various occasions and this is just a continuation of that process of growing our team and moving it in the right direction. I’m looking forward to getting off to a well-conditioned training camp and productive preseason in preparation for opening night and the regular season.”

All of the practice sessions during the preseason will be held at the Kings Practice Facility.

Sacramento will break camp on Tuesday, October 9th in preparation for the team’s preseason opener versus Phoenix on Wednesday, October 10th (7 pm) in the first of three home games at Power Balance Pavilion. Sacramento also plays host to Portland on Monday, October 15th (7 pm) and Golden State on Wednesday, October 17th (7 pm).

It appears that Josh Akognon, who played extremely well on our summer league team, won't be at the Kings training camp. He signed with a chinese league, but has an out clause that he exercised to accept an invitation to the Mav's training camp. Probably a wise choice on his part. He had little or no chance of landing a spot on the Kings. He would have made good camp fodder though.

It was reported today that Tony Mitchell, who played on our summer league team has been invited to our training camp and he has accepted. He played well, and surprisingly shot the ball well from beyond the arc. I say that, because that was the weakest part of his game at Alabama where he shot just over 30%. He was a pretty good defensive player in college averaging 1.4 blocks a game and just over a steal a game. His strength is his athleticism. He's good at getting to the basket and finishing. He's not a particularly good passer with close to a 1 to 1 ratio in assists to turnovers.

The Kings still have a roster spot open that I assumed might go to Darnell Jackson, but the same report stated that if the Kings were to sign Mitchell, they might release Honeycutt whose contract isn't guaranteed. So its possible that they might add both Mitchell and Jackson to the permanent roster. The report also stated that the Kings wern't satisfied with Honeycutts work ethic and overall progress. Interesting since Honeycutt had a pretty good reputation coming out of UCLA.

I believe that's what's called "lighting a fire under one's butt". I like Honeycutt, and I'd like to see him develop into a useful player. But if Mitchell beats him out, then he beats him out and Honeycutt has nobody to blame but himself.

you know, if you're going to drop Honeycutt, KINDLY SIGN TERRENCE WILLIAMS!

Does this guy look like he's lost weight and will arrive in good shape, or what?

I like Honeycutt, and I was very happy we drafted him, but I have also been disappointed with his work ethic. Obviously we are dealing with a small sample size blah blah blah, but he hasn't shown us much. He has a little Donte in him (just happy to be here approach) without the physical tools and size advantage Donte had. Considering we dropped Whiteside, a player who plays a position we are currently undermanned at, I wouldn't be surprised to see us cut Honeycutt, a player who's position we have a ton of mediocre talent at.

And honestly, Tony Mitchell looked good. He looked better than Tyler has ever looked. He plays bigger, he's more physical, and he has a better NBA body. If he beats out Tyler in camp I wouldn't be surprised.

And just to back up Bricklayer, I'd take Terrence over either guy (and over about half our roster) .. which has to mean something happened that we don't know about.

Actually, his rep wasn't that great at UCLA. I thought his rep with the Kings was pretty good, though. He was reported to have worked out with IT and Jimmer before the games.

More like the guy who made Desagana Diop and Mouhamed Sene look like legitimate players.

Hmmm! It seems most of you have a poor opinion of N'Diaye. I wonder how many of you saw him play in college? There's no denying that offensively he's a long way from a finished product, but his mainstay is defense. He was named Big East defensive player of the year at Rutgers his senior year. He didn't come over to the United States until he went to highschool, and never touched a basketball until then. So he's another one of those that got a late start. And the truth is, he's never really had a legitimate chance in the NBA. He's played in a total of 19 games averaging 4 minutes a game.

His senior year at Rutgers he averaged 4.5 blocks a game, very similar to Whiteside. The difference is that N'Diaye did it in the Big East conference against top competition. Now I'm not saying he's going to be the next coming of Akeem, but it certainly doesn't hurt to give him a chance and see what he can do. He's only 25 years old, and he's a legit 7 footer in shoes with a 7'6" wingspan. Everyone complains that the Kings need a shotblocker, so here is a guy that made his rep in college blocking shots.

I'll admit I never saw him play in college. But I certainly don't want to hang any hopes on a guy who couldn't get playing time (83 minutes total) in two years with a terrible Wizards team and is already in his age-26 season. There's gotta be a reason he can't get on the court. I figure if we wanted a big man to ride the bench this year we'd have held on to Whiteside, so I'd guess he's more camp fodder than roster hopeful. Plus, there's still that specter of Darnell Jackson out there who might take up that #5 big man slot - at least Darnell can contribute so I would think he'd have a leg up.

I'd be surprised if Jackson doesn't get an invite. Of course he still has to accept. He may get offers from another team. But regardless of whether Jackson is there or not, N'Diaye has to earn a roster spot. As to the Wizards, there just wasn't much playing time to go around. You had JaValle McGee getting the bulk of the time at center and Blatche getting most of the minutes that were left when he wasn't playing PF. Don't forget they also had Kevin Seraphin, Hilton Armstrong, and Trevor Booker all getting minutes. When you add in that N'Diaye was extremely raw offensively, it was difficult for him to get on the floor.

I've never heard anything about him having a bad work ethic, or being a problem child in any way, so its possible that he's just raw, and is a victim of circumstance. He's certainly worth a look.

He's a big body and has size, which we really don't have anywhere enough of. If he can play 10-15mins a night, rebound, play at least average defense and alter a shot every now and then, it'd be big for us considering what we have down low. I'm pretty worried about what happens when both JT and Cuz sub out of games. If NDiaye can leap over Chuck in the rotation and be paired with TRob off the bench in spurts, and provide what Chuck can't, it'll help us. No reason not to take a look. Personally I'd like to take a look at Fesenko, but that doesn't seem like it's happening.

I believe that N'Diaye is just a tad cheaper.

This may be our semiannual see? look! we really did try to get a shotblocker! scrub game, but there really is no evidence at all that Ndiaye, who spent last year in the D-league and has bounced up and down and been released by his former team while barely touching the floor, can unseat a proven vet like Chuck , no matter what his deficiencies. I'll cheerfully take such a player onto the team, but he's likely to be limited to strictly Whiteside duty I'm afraid.

If nothing else, the addition of Robinson, and possibly N'Diaye might inspire Chuck to be in good shape and earn his money. It would however be a nice surprise if N'Diaye were to show enough to earn some minutes, and make Chuck irrelevant. Not likely, but one can always hope...

Looks like Darnell is going to be in Utah's camp, so maybe there is a spot for NDiaye...or not given our 14 contracts:

Well, that's surprising. I'm not a big Darnell fan but he's better than nothing and expected him in camp for us. So, what happens if NDiaye doesn't pan out in camp, which i'd say the odds are he doesn't, but I'm just trying to be somewhat hopeful.

Damn we need size.

Someone that I saw in summer league that I thought played very well was Jerome Jordan. the 7 footer out of Tulsa. I don't believe he's on a team right now, or if he's been invited to anyone's camp. He's another one that was a good defensive player in college, but didn't do much on offense. It looked like his offense had improved since college.

Thing is:

1 - Cousins
2- Thompson
3- Hayes
4- Robinson
5- Johnson
6- Outlaw
7- Honeycutt
8- Salmons
9- Cisco
10- Reke
11- Thornton
12- Jimmer
13- Brooks
14- Thomas

With 14 contracts already on the books that tells me there is an excellent chance that according to our front office Outlaw is our 5th "big". No room for another unless we decide to use Honeycutt's roster spot, move Jimmer before the season or some thing like that.
