If you say so, hoss. If you're sick of Jason Thompson, just wait until we're starting Reggie Evans. Or, even better, wait until we're starting Quincy Acy, and we have to come face-to-face with the harsh reality that he actually can't sustain that level of intensity/performance over extended minutes.

This trade has to be a step to something else. Cause on it's own it does just about nothing. Terry is 10 million of worthless at this point. Evans meet acy. Acy meet Evans. Another pf on a team full of them. Great. And another one just below the skills of JT.
Something better be around the corner.
It also makes sense for me because I have hoped and advocated the trading of Thornton since preseason for the general good of the team. It happened and I am pleased. Whatever we get out of Terry and Evans will be gravy in my book.

Why would we want our best PF (that would fit in very nicely as a third big off the bench) gone? You would rather have Landry, Acy, and Evans? Really?
I basically see four players on this Kings roster that I think would have roles on a playoff contending team. This is what I'd see as a rotation for such a team:
C/PF Athletic shotblocker/weakside defender/rebounder - ???
PF/C DeMarcus Cousins
SF Rudy Gay
SG 3&D wing - ???
PG Defensive minded, pass first PG
6th man/bench scorer - Isaiah Thomas
3rd big/backup PF/C - Jason Thompson
There are of course other roles to fill on the bench (3rd PG, wing shooter, emergency big man etc) but those are the easier (and far cheaper) slots to fill if you've sorted out the more important ones. Could McLemore be that 3&D wing? Maybe, but I'm not counting on it and would be okay with a trade that involved him and brought back one of the other missing pieces the Kings need in my opinion. Will IT sign for 6th man money and be willing to play that role? Probably not. But that's how I see the roster as it stands now. Lots of flotsam and jetsam with essentially 2 starters and two ideal bench players.
And JT to me is a perfect fit as a bench big. He can swing between both spots, is long and athletic enough to guard midrange PFs like Aldridge and Bosh but strong enough to bang in the post. He takes the most difficult defensive matchup, rebounds decently, hits open 15 footers and is willing to play a role. I think he's paid just right for the role and he's still young enough that he shouldn't see any decline through the length of his current deal and has shown himself to be durable as well. Yes, he whines to the refs, sometimes makes dumb plays and can be inconsistent. Small flaws for a guy that otherwise has a very clear role and a solid contract for the role I think he should be playing.
This is Thompson's entire career in a nutshell: a great third big, on a team that's never had a second big. Well, we had one, once, but we let him walk. And we keep getting guys that we expect to replace him, only to realize that they're not any good, either, and we have to go back to Thompson, like a mid-season replacement show on CBS. He's the Rules of Engagement of the NBA.

Yep. Early on I think a substantial contingent of Kings fans were trying to squint hard enough to make the Hawes/JT combo look like Vlade/CWebb lite but soon enough it was pretty obvious what Thompson was and wasn't. Hardly his fault that the FO couldn't bring in anybody good enough to let him play the role he's best suited for.
Given the going rate for defensive anchors on the open market the Kings will have to look to a trade (still not a great likelihood) or to the draft. Embiid would be a bit of overkill for the role but I wouldn't turn down the chance to nab him. Willie Cauley-Stein seems perfectly suited.

Jimmer rumors swirling is all. Washington, Cleveland and Denver all linked with varying levels of reliability at this point.
If only there was a place where people could post what they knew about the latest Kings trades... Preference if it was 78 pages long.
I kid, I kid. Seriously, I kid. I think the silence of this thread about other specific deals means no one here knows anything else. That also means a whole lot of nothing, since there could very well be things going on and (based on our efforts to shop IT, Jimmer, and to a lesser extent JT) probably are things going on, but I think this board has no other insider knowledge (just hope) of another trade.

The issue is the crap around them. That's what needs to be solved. Or are you suggesting the priority should be to replace Boogie and Rudy?

I don't think he was suggesting anything about DMC or Gay. I think he meant that JT is not among our first or second priority of issues to fix right now. Lets work on those first.

Report circulated by Stein that the Rockets are interested in trading for Rondo, and this is where I was saying our ability to shake rondo loose from Boston could pay dividends. Well, if our front office/coach wasn't irrationally emotionally and defensively attached to Ben/Landry at least.
In any case, you could potentially get involved in a three way deal with Boston and Houston. Rondo ending up in Houston, the Lin/Asik duo on the move, let the Rockets provide the pick...but I just can't work out hwo the numbers would work for us unles we dumped both JT AND Landry. At which point you have just dumped IT, JT, and Landry to ge back Lin and Asik, and I am no sure you are a winner, nor am I sure the teams downwind are going to take all that longterm money. So...harrumph. Seems like an opportunity, but hard to figure the details.

No but why JT? No, don't answer, I'm familiar with it all. One answer is SG, we have no playable one and we need two. We have one PG and we need two. We have Jimmer but he has no position. We have Ray but he doesn't play. We should decide on JT and keep one of Acy, Williams, Landry and Evans. Is gray an adequate backup at center? When you get all that and the rest of our problems in order then take on the problem of JT. Like all our team JT can go if he is part of getting something really good somewhere in our lineup. There's lots of work left on fashioning our over .500 team.

Well the one thing about that sort of trade from the King's perspective is if we can still manage to keep our own pick then we might still be in the running for either a really good PG (Exum) or one of the good defensive bigs in the draft. If you draft Exum then Lin becomes your primary back-up PG, and if you draft a big then you can start Asik and have the drafted big work himself into the role of the starter while moving Asik to the back-up spot. If Ben can actually begin to fill in the role of the 3&D SG, then you have a pretty fleshed out roster. It might not take you too far, but it should at least make the team good enough to compete for that 8th spot next year.
