Kings active in trade talks?

I can't see any team wanting to trade for Landry, especially since he has missed most of the season with injury and has 3 years remaining after this season at $6.5M per year.

If true, I do like the thinking of the front office. I can only assume we are keeping JT (as a 3rd big) which suits me fine! Just get that shotblocker next to Cuz and JT off the bench....that is a great 3 big men rotation.
 
What do people think of the Celtics big who started out blazing but now does not get much time in Vitor Favorani (spelling), the dude has a interesting skillset and good size. I see some potential in him.

May not be a popular opinion but it's a fair statement.... imagine PDA under the Clowns, operating with the same restrictions that Petrie had. What's happened this year would have never happened.

love to see "whispers," but i just don't know how the kings get it done before the deadline. danny ainge would really have to love IT to trade rondo to sac without getting a first rounder in return. maybe throw in the upside of ben mclemore and then carl landry to get salaries to match, but i still doubt very seriously that ainge bites. any player that the kings package with IT and/or mclemore to get salaries to match certainly wouldn't be all that attractive to a rebuilding celtics team, save maybe derrick williams...

I suppose there really are two questions here.

The first is whether Rondo is healthy. I haven't seen him play yet (and obviously his minutes are down) but his numbers look down a bit, and his shooting is terrible. Could be rust, could be the effect of suddenly being the #1 offensive option (his FGAs are way up per minute), so that's not the kiss of death. But before selling the farm, I want to know that he's going to be the player he was before the injury.

The second is what we could possibly sell to get him. Salary matching in and of itself won't be a problem - we can get away with sending the Celtics only about $7M if it's for Rondo straight up. But we'll take DMC and Gay off the table, and we don't have a first-rounder to offer them. We could design numerous "option-to-swap" scenarios, but those aren't terribly big incentives if the trade that generates them makes the trading partner into a top-10 team. For instance, we could give them the option to swap for each of the next three years (subject to Chicago not getting the pick), and with them rebuilding and us in the playoffs, never actually convey anything. So you figure IT and Ben would have to go, and then...DWill? Would the Celtics actually go for IT/Ben/DWill with no guaranteed picks? I don't know.

Still, that trade would only give us one year. This year is already burned, we are just too far out to back into the playoffs. Assuming Gay does not opt out, after our first year I the playoffs (2014-2015) we would have to resign both Rondo and Gay. We'd have the cap space to do it, but we'd have to actually make sure they stick around. Would we have to put out three max contracts to keep that core? And would that be worth it?

But it definitely is intriguing.
 
I'd trade a top 4 protected draft pick for Rondo
Send the farm away!
We can sign our free agents next summer for rim protector & SG (Klay Thompson?)

We will not have the cap space.

Rondo will get $12M
Gay will get $19M if he doesn't opt out but even if you re-sign him its for $14-15M
DMC will get $14M

We still have a bunch of overpaid players or larger contracts the will be difficult to move. We won't have a cap space to sign anyone meaningful

However, with Rondo-Gay-DMC and hopefully a draft pick, it could work. If we can draft a shot blocker that would address the PF spot and with Rondo, Thornton might actually become more productive because he SHOULD get more good shots which is what his game is all about.
 
I've actually been theorizing that pursuing Rondo has been the Kings plan for quite some time now. I think the reports a month or 2 ago were credible, it just makes a lot of sense since it puts both franchises ahead. Boston ahead with the beginning of their rebuild, and us with the end of ours. Cousins - Rondo - Gay is legit. We aren't getting that kind of talent through Free Agency and draft picks are a gamble and can take a while to pan out. We have the pieces to make a huge splash.
 
Could Boston swap this pick with the Kings so the Kings would have a 1st rounder? Like two separate trades - 1 Jimmer for the pick below. Then do a larger trade for Rondo with the Kings pick?

Celtics receive less favorable 2014 first-round pick and of Hawks and Nets.
 
I wonder if Portland would have any interest in Landry since they need a big who can score off the bench.

Maybe Landry for Victor Claver (fill in to make it work) and Dorell Wright? Wright while he is another SF is a pretty decent defender and shooter while being on a 3million dollar deal.

I honestly hope we can trade Landry for anything... even a 3rd rounder. I don't understand the signing of him at all.

No one will take him on. That is the point.

In fact, I suspect that if we do end up with Rondo, there will be a Gerald Wallace contract coming our way which removes further flexibility. I would probably still go it provided that I can keep my pick this year.

Shedding the salary that we already have is not easy at all. Why would someone take on Thornton, or Landry for that matter. Both are handsomely paid for very little production this season. You take your chances on stars but not on role players.

I suspect that if we do trade for Rondo, Thornton will continue to be our SG and he might be more productive for a change because I suspect he would get more looks, certainly more better looks than he does now.

Ainge is not giving up Rondo without either getting back major picks and/or being able to dump some serious long term salary on us. That Wallace contract is VERY VERY ugly. People are nervous about Sanders' salary but Wallace makes him look like in prime Shaq in comparison.
 
Please let it be true. I'd give Boston anyone not named Cousins and Gay for Rondo. Those 3 together would be legit. I'm not worried about Rondo's health, he's not Derrick Rose, he's never been an elite athlete or the fastest one on the court. Passing and court vision are two abilities that you don't lose after an injury.

I keep hearing that we cannot trade our pick, but, would it be possible to give Boston our first round pick in 2014 if it's in the top 12 (so, if we don't have to give it to Chicago), or our 2015 pick unprotected? If we lose our 2014 draft pick to the Bulls, it means in 2015 we would have our pick for sure. Would it be ok for the NBA rules?

I wouldn't care losing our pick if we end up with Rondo. Too good to be true I'm afraid.

hopefully. the only problem with his signing is that he brings offense..and we have a lot of that. he's not much of a defensive player nor rebounder.

99% sure if the Kings trade for a late 1st they could then trade their pick - top 10. See my post #1846 above.

Essentially, yes. It's a bit tricky, but it would work under the Stepien Rule. We would be trading away the remainder of our protected pick. It would look like this:

Kings trade 2014 first-round pick (13-30 protected). If not conveyed, Kings trade 2015 first-round pick (additional protections could be added, etc.)

I thought we couldn't trade consecutive firsts . If they got this years first, then next year we are better, Chicago would get it.
 
They have bayless and Presley and Bradley. Not sure IT would be in their plans. Bradley mostly SG these days though. If they would take MT and Landry I would take Wallace
 
I don't understand why people don't like landry. He shouldn't be on the court right now he is hurt so don't judge him right now. He will be an important player when he gets healthy for our bench, not a lot of teams have a scoring post player on the bench

JT/Ben/IT would do it.
But you need to have commitment from Rondo to sign after next season.

If Rudy opts-out and sign for around 15M and Rondo committing long term, Kings would turn into something really special.

The Stepien Rule says that you cannot make a trade, the conditions of which will or might leave you with no first round picks in two consecutive future drafts. If we were to acquire a different (and unprotected) 2014 first-rounder as suggested by the original poster, the subsequent trade of the 1-12 portion of our 2014 pick could leave us without a 2015 pick (possibly going to Chicago) but we would still have a 2014 pick (even though not our own) and thus not fall afoul of the Stepien Rule.
