interview w/ maloof on khtk

I would rather they not spend it on trash and have it available for future trades and such than not have the space available..

i'm with ya on that. i think they thought they were going to be in anaheim thats why they said that. gavin is so fake.

It would be pretty tough to spend it all at this point. They could pay Dalembert 10M and Thornton 6M and still be just around 50M total. We need to resign a few people in the next few years so it'd be dumb to use it all

Well at this point, we need Daly, or a defensive center. Other than that, all we really need in another ballhandler, maybe a vet. I could definitely see it making sense not to blow every penny of our cap space, especially with the 2012 FA class much deeper than this one.

they're not spending ALL of the capspace like they claimed LOL

What the hell are you talking about? Gavin stated they were going to use all the cap space they could, and he said, and I quote "We will start at the top of the list of who is the best free agent and work our way down" when trying to sign them.

Topic creator obviously had an agenda when he made this topic.

Maloof basically stated that the Kings made a great trade today, we're going to have an extremely exciting team next year, he told the season ticket holders that they would improve the team and spend money in free agency, and he plans to do exactly that. He kept re-iterating how they will continue to spend and make the team better. His main focus is to re-sign Thornton, and then 2A) to get Dally or 2B) get another big in free agency to replace Dally if he doesn't re-sign with us.

What I liked is what he stated: "We will start at the best free agents and make our way down through them to try to sign them".

Yeah, that's what I heard as well. As someone who has been a little skeptical about their proclamation that they were going to go hard after FA's, I felt pretty optimistic after his interview. Doesn't sound like Daley will be back though.

Apparently we have a team with no holes and are going to be unstoppable. I expect nothing less than a championship ;-) Seriously though, i loved his enthusiasm and feel the same.

Why would they spend the whole cap even if they could? This team is very much a work in progress no matter who we add and we will want to remain flexible to add the finishing pieces when we get there. Last I checked we were still a lotto team though which means we have a ways to go yet.

I don't really care if they spend all of it this year. Just at least spend some of it, which they seem to be doing. As long a the team is getting better, that's the most important part. It would actually be wise to leave enough cap space to make a run for CP3, Williams, or Howard next year.

Hmmmm, so neither DemarcusCousins or BigCuz15 seems to listen very well. Find that somewhat ironic.

The interview will probably be posted on KHTK's website in a day or two. So you can listen and see just how creditable their report was.

Just listened to the broadcast. I heard nothing that even came close to what was implied by the Big Cuz. I do think that Gavin might be just a wee bit too optimistic about how good the team will be. But I do agree with him that the team is much better. At least on paper. As far as spending money, he basicly said they would spend whatever was needed to be spent. Not in those exact words. No where in the interview did he say, we're not going to spend all the money available under the cap.

As was previously stated. He said we're going to start at the top of the freeagent list and work our way down it, trying to sign the best players on that list.

it's funny to hear them talk about free agency after they thought they were moving to sunny socal. yes, we are spending every penny of it! and now? you listened to the interview. i personally don't care if they spend it all or not. the kings imo already have the guys they need to pay in the near future.

They said it. I remember it clear as a bell.
I remember the Maloofs saying they had cap room and would be willing to spend money. I don't remember them ever saying they would spend 100% of the cap room. That would be a stupid thing to say anyway, if you were going to be trying to negotiate salaries with FAs.

Plus that would also hamstring us in negotiations with Cuz and Reke in a few years. Pretty sure we'll have to pay those guys more than the MLE (if that still exists) to keep them around.

I remember it. The quote was something like "we have cap space and we're going to spend all of it". then not long after that it changed to something like "I don't know if we'll spend all of it but we'll spend a good portion".

And because that is exactly the way I think management should approach FA, I am somewhat encouraged...

Spending all your cap space would not be prudent at this time, esp if there's going to be a hard cap and you won't have the Larry Bird exemptions to sign your own best players.

I haven't thought a lot about this but I would think the cap might be relatively hard to keep parity and the Bird exemption would stay in place and perhaps enhanced to benefit the team to keep player continuity for the fans. I miss that. So, spend what you need to to keep your own player but otherwise all the other exemptioons can be done away with, especially the MLE. Perhaps eliminate the luxury tax if the only way of going over the cap is the Bird exemption.

Player continuity in a city is very important to me. It is meaningful to draft a player and have him retire without a team switch. It was very much like that in the past and the fan gets attached to the players far more than now. Although the fans that post here know everything about everybody on our team, the casual fan will be drawn more to the team if he/she isn't witnessing the musical chairs approach that is in play now.

I'll let other people battle this out. ;)
