This gets boring. I know what brick and piksi want and understand that their superior intellect allows them to see the bigger picture but I will never root for this team to lose.

It isn't just us and we aren't rooting for the team to lose. We just don't want this team to continue staying mediocre until infinity. We don't jump from joy after beating a pathetic Grizzlies team like one of the Maloofs did tonight. He was jumping around just like he did when we were really good and beating really good teams. I am afraid that he has lost a touch with reality here.

That is generally an reasonable stance (snideness aside) -- as opposed to the faux mystification professed sometimes, just an admission that a) the problem is understood; but b) can't go there.

Thing is, and this has been covered many times on this board too, there comes a point when you rooting for your team is actually you rooting against your team. When your team gets hurt in the long term if what you want to happen actually happens in the short term. That is the tricky perplexing part. In the most extreme case you can find yourself having the same rooting interest in a game as a Lakers fan hoping you win so that you don't get that young stud which will revive your franchise.

well, we everybody healthy, Salmons doesn't go 12-21 with 11/7. Cisco isn't on the floor ho hit a late three and Navaro doesn't shoot 2-13 against Bibby.
If You think that when other guys come back - the team will raise the level - think again. Guys that are playing well will play less and lose efficiency. There won't be a big difference in overall record.

And while we laugh winning this tonight - coming june Grizzlies will have a last laugh and as You could see tonight - they draft well.

Wow...you are one cynical kings fan!!

Whatever, i think we will be a much better team with our all stars back and memphis didnt have the last laugh in the 07 draft. There were supposed to get Oden or Durrant. We only had 10 available players and basically used 8, great win no matter how you slice it.

which all stars are you referring to? brad miller? ;)

still in a better position than we were at #10. don't know why they took conley but i woulda taken Yi with that pick. That guy is gonna be something down the road.

The Maloof's care ONLY about the # of butts in the seats at Arco. It's been around 12,500 on average this season with only one or two so-called home sell outs. If this Kings team was to tank by design which is impossible for Coach Theus to stomach just to name one person - attendance could nose dive to the point of utter contempt by the "best fans in the NBA" (although Golden State fans may have now taken that mantle). With all the various problems the Kings franchise has (arena, etc.) tanking on purpose is obviously unacceptable to most in Sactown.

And it's no secret that Gavin Maloof is a fan first and foremost and an excitable fan at that. He was caught up in the moment just like everyone else in Arco. And I honestly cannot see any problem with that at all.

What's he supposed to do? Sit there and frown?

I think the term, borrowed from football, is "act like you've been there before."

I get that part but if we keep being mediocre people will stop showing up anyways and we are on a good way to do just that. Maybe if they lowered ticket prices to fit the quality of the product. Now just imagine us having let's say Kevin Durant on our team right now. The whole perspective would be different.

But Kevin Durant isn't on the team. And fans in Sacramento want something to root for when they go to the games - and over 12,000 people a night are still going. While the intellectuals worry about the big picture, the more emotional fan will just cheer for the now. That's just the way it is...

again - I get the point. I just don't know - what that "now" is ??? What is the purpose of the "now" ?

Kevin Durant has not made the Sonics any better than they were last year. But, I agree he's likely to make them better in the future. He could turn out like Kevin Garnett who when he arrived in Minnesota everyone said would take them to the ultimate promise land. He never did.

To me it's all about the Sacramento Kings getting better no matter how it's done. The draft can help, but it's no guarantee. The free agent market can help, but it's no guarantee. It seems to me we can say one thing for sure about this Kings team vs. last years dismal squad. The coaches want to win and will do ANYTHING to mount a playoff drive until there's absolutely no chance of getting in. Once the Kings are eliminated from playoff contention I expect the player rotations and minutes will look a LOT different. But should the team progress and make the playoffs this year - GREAT!! We know Ron Artest believes Kings will win the NBA championship IF they get in - how many times does he have to say it:D Should Bibby and/or Artest get traded this season - so be it. As the sign lady displays proudly at Arco each game, "In The Kings Of Kings Reggie Theus We Trust!" GO KINGS!!

again - I get the point. I just don't know - what that "now" is ??? What is the purpose of the "now" ?

I don't know about everyone else but I enjoy basketball...a lot. I love to go to games and, of course, when I'm there I root for one team to win. Before the Kings came to Sacramento, my rooting was primarily at the college level. You NEVER root against your college team in the hopes they'll get better in the future...you root for the players you have to do the best they can.

For whatever reason, the majority of Kings fans who attend games viewed them like a college team. The atmosphere at games was electric and high-charged and the fans were excited and vocal.

That's the now. I hope you can understand what I meant because I don't know how else to explain it.

Again, speaking for myself, rooting for a team is a "now" thing. You want to be caught up in the emotions of the game, the excitement of the crowd, etc.

Does that make sense to you?

Seems what the great debate here is, what process the team should take to get better.

This pretty much sums up my take on this sichiation.

1)'Create' a losing team (by trading our better, older players s.a. Artest, Bibby, Miller and playing our younger players) to positively affect our draft position

Pros
High Draft Pick - which increases chances of getting a 'franchise' player

Cons
Best case scenario is at least a 4 yr process (example: LeBron James, debatably the most 'sure thing' drafted the past 5 years. Made Eastern Conference finals in 4th season, ultimately to get swept in the Finals. Following year, not even mentioned as one of the top 2 contenders in the East.

Cost
Sacrifices fans 'now' by adopting a loser mentality which looks bad on the city and organization.

2)Compete at current level, while trying to improve through 'free agency', trades, and attained draft picks.

Pros
Keep organizations' dignity, keep the respect of the fans and the rest of league(competition)

Cons
Odds of attaining a 'franchise' player are higher

I'm for option 2. Others may not see it this way and are entitled to their opinions, this is mine.

I'm not gonna touch this debate tonight.

I went to the game and it was fun! I heard quite a few cowbells tonight, which I really haven't heard much for some time. Brad with two flying jams in one game! Cisco with the clutch three!

But huge props to Salmons for apparently playing very sick. Maybe someone already put this in the thread somewhere? I'm too tired to read it all tonight.

Ideally I think we trade for a disgruntled superstar

I would love to us get Pau Gasol

Miller/Artest for Pau

PG) Bibby
SG) Martin
SF) Salmons
PF) Pau
C) Moore/Hawes

People enjoy watching the Kings play and win. Over-analyzing the short-term and long-term is better for non-game days...not after the team wins. People like to enjoy the moment....most of the people on the forum, if not all, understand that we need to get better, younger, rebuild, reload, whatever terminology you want to call it. Enjoy the win, over-analyze it tomorrow....you should try it.

Feel free to point out to me the game where our normal trio has put up better than 75 points 19rebs 11ast, had one guy nearly go for a triple double, and another hit the big clutch shot to win it.

You woudl be damn lucky to get that out of Mike/Kevin/Ron. Or for that matter any little man trio.

Lets take a look at the stats then.

Beno: 25 points, 3 assists, 4 rebounds, 42 minutes
Salmons: 28 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists 44 minutes
Garcia: 22 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist 42 minutes

You don't think that Bibby can match Beno's production, Ron can match Salmons' production, and Kevin can match Cisco's production in over 40 minutes, playing at that pace, against a young Memphis team disinterested in defense? I think so.

how awesome (with the way john is playing) would it be if we could swing a ron artest-david lee trade and then eventually buy out kenny thomas.

bibby
martin
salmons
lee/moore
miller

bench:
beno
cisco
hawes
douby
williams
jones

COMPETE AT WHAT LEVEL? That's what the Kings have been doing the last couple of years. what do have to show for it? Hawes and Price and Doubly. What has our record look like in that time span. Time for a total rebuild.

not sure which team you are watching...but with the current talent we can compete with anyone in the league. Granted we will need to do something with Artest and Bibby, but i believe Petrie has really made some great moves that are finally starting to come around. and i think with Theus at the helm i can only see us going up.

Obviously you can't ask players to tank.
And obviously you can't ask the coaching staff to tank.

If you want to positively affect your draft position, that decision really has to come from the owners and GM. They accomplish that by removing the assets from a team, mainly in the form of players, that are likely to get the team more wins in the short-term.

Everyone with me on that?

Now here's the dilemma that arises. Say we trade Bibby, Artest, Miller, for draft pick, young guys, or expiring contracts in an effort to have a crappy season followed by a good draft.

And the young and untested guys we have left step up and win 38 games for us anyway.

Then what? Are we going to say that our GM should have done more to sabotage our season? Where does this end?

A season of 38 wins produced by a young rebuilding team with financial flexibility = progress and improvement.

A season of 38 wins produced by a patched together team of mismatched parts with zero finanical flexibility = gunning the gas when your wheels are burried in the sand.

dilemma? that's ideal! having young guys play up to their potential, AND draft picks + free agency money to complement that roster? are you kidding???

Several notes about the game:

1st: Maybe it was just me but for most of the game (except the first quarter and last 6 minutes of the fourth quarter) it didn’t have that energy (it seemed for both the players and the fans). Nobody really got out of their seats until the closing seconds. Infact, someone was standing infront of us and these guys next to us told him to “please sit down” and the man replied “It’s the last minute of the game, you should be standing up”

2nd: Damness, Douby can jump. lol…In the second quarter around the 6:20\40 mark he came to block a shot, I think, by Gay. What a nice jump.

3rd: I might be the only person on this board that wanted Cisco to take the shots at the last second. Miller tried a three and so did Salmons, but I wanted that ball in Ice Cold Cisco’s hands. Thank you for making it buddy. I like the fact that he seems to be passing more, instead of trapping himself on some crazy play and then shooting it.

4th: I thought that Salmon’s lost us the game by almost turning it over until he had no choice but to pass it to Garcia.

5th: Gotta love that little dance by Dahntay Jones.
6th: It’s Miller Time. Man, two slams in one game.

Except for the fact that we won't have free agency money available (financial flexibility), at least not this offseason. So you are talking about complementing the roster with draft picks only (and in my example we weren't getting a high draft pick), as well as whatever you can get for the MLE.

KT and Shareef alone will account for over $15 million (over 1/4 of the cap) next year. Won't be any FA money 'til the mistakes of the past are cleared out or run their course. And if we utilize the MLE for multi-year deals every year, as we've been doing (Shareef in 2005, Salmons in 2006, Mikki in 2007) we'll never have the flexibility to get a pricier FA.

If people are rooting for the team to lose to improve our draft position, and we narrowly miss the playoffs and end up with the #12 pick, you know exactly the kind of bitching that is going to take place.

"Oh, why'd we have to steal that woss against ______! We got rid of our best players and we still get a crappy draft pick!"
