Hmmm
There are two reasons that I give a little more weight to anything Grant says about possible trades:
(1) Napear has basically become a mouthpiece for Maloof Sports & Entertainment
(2) Unlike most radio hosts, he really doesn't talk about possible trades or speculate on roster moves very often.
I think at this point Peja needs to be moved. The Kings won't get value for him in a sign-and-trade this summer, and I don't want to see them pony up max or near-max dollars to retain him.
If he is dealt, I hope that either he is packaged with another talented player (Miller and/or Bibby) for a real star to build around, or that he is packaged with Kenny Thomas to get KT's attitude and contract out of Sacramento.
I wonder if Grant and Mike got wind of an impending trade when they were talking about KT looking as if he didn't want to be here. I wouldn't be upset if Petrie dumped Peja and Kenny for a high lottery pick and ending contracts. Maybe a deal with Toronto for Jalen Rose who could then be shipped off to the Knicks for Penny Hardway's ending deal.
The Kings are likely going to have a top ten pick this year, and maybe even top five. Throw in a pick from Toronto (likely top three) and even in this weak draft, maybe they land a real future star to build around.
Wallowing in mediocrity can very easily be self-perpetuating. Not good enough to really compete and not bad enough to land a stud in the draft, and without caproom to do much of anything.
A gamble has to be made one way or the other. If Petrie wants to compete, send Peja to Indiana for Artest if the Pacers are still interested. Otherwise, it's time to start blowing it up and rebuilding.
