Geoff Petrie/GM candidates

This year is the final year on Geoff Petrie's contract and the popular opinion here(and the media) seems to be that we should not bother resigning him at the end of the year. If so what other GM candidates out there do you think would do a better job and help propel this team back to the glory days?

Or do you think the Maloofs will stick with their boy?

GP is nearly 65 years old, although he looks young and fit. I think he's looking forward to retirement more than new long term deal with Kings - which they might not offer anyway. Even though he's been with the team since 1993-94 and had in past had a few long term deals, his current short term contract is much less dollars annually than before. He could remain consultant or some such with the team but "President of Basketball Operations for Sacramento Kings" is less likely, IMO. Petrie probably would entertain other offers and might get some, but with his established ranch home in Sac area as well as long standing ties to Portland, hard to imagine him back east (where he's originally from) or somewhere else along NBA trail. Also, his son works for Kings organization and is up and coming. Not unlike when Don Nelson was grooming his son to take the over GM reins in Dallas organization. I appreciate greatly what Geoff Petrie has done over the years here but his time is coming to an end for a job well done, and time to move on.

I nominate Bricklayer as replacement.

Extend him. Don't let the maloofs hire a new GM. My reasons:
1. maloofs would likely hire someone on the cheap, both in terms of finance and quality.
2. Better the devil you know, than an unknown. Which I guess relates to point 1.

Has Petrie done a decent job? I think so, but so many variables affect the final outcome. The roster is still unbalanced, Jimmer needs to show up, etc., but the main pieces are arguably in place.

I'd be ok letting him go, I'd be ok extending him. We could do worse. I don't entirely trust the Maloofs to hire anyone good, either.

GP retires. Maloofs decide that, "Hey, we've been basketball owners for long enough, why should we even waste our precious money on a GM? Lets GM ourselves!". In my disgust, I become a Lakers fan.





(That last part about the Lakers is a joke, but I honestly wouldnt be surprised to see our POS owners pull some clownish nonsense like that).

I'm not so sure this is true. I can see popular opinion here going either way.

This. Completely. I'm not looking forward to the day the maloofs pick the next GM. It'll probably be John Whisenant.

When Petrie had money to work with, he made good decisions more often than not. He's not good at putting on bandaids. Especially cheap bandaids. I know everyone lives in the "What have you done lately" world, but on the whole, he's done a good job. Lets not forget that he was offered an extension at one point and turned it down. Personally I don't think he's into moving again, and would retire before picking up and relocating. He's been in sacramento a long time and likes his ranch in the foothills. Likely the only other place he would consider is Portland, and I doubt he would ever work for that orginization again. There's still bad blood there.

So as I see it, he's more likely to do this on a year by year basis until such time as, the team moves, or he's simply tired of doing it. He probably comes at a reasonable price when compared to other good GM's around the league. So I suspect the Maloofs would love to keep him if he's willing. Petrie is probably as fed up with the way the Maloofs are running things as we are.

Based on recent performance (recent being the last 10 years) I don't think there's a very strong case for re-signing Petrie. Wherever the blame lies, there's been too many bad free agent signings, too many bad coaching hires, too many mismanaged young players. The whole organization needs a change and they need it soon before Evans and Cousins decide they've had enough. On the other hand, if Petrie does go I'm more afraid of who the Maloofs hire to replace him. That's the unfortunate thing. I'm not thrilled with the work Petrie is doing right now, but the ownership is 10 times worse and they're a lot harder to replace.

At this point, Salmons is pretty much done and the worst contract on the team. Jimmer is the 5th guard on a non-playoff team. While it too fast to close the book on him, he looks like a bust.

I agree the Maloofs could do worse, but you can't bring Petrie back after that mess.

I think GP has done a good job rebuilding the Kings on the Maloof's budget. He deserves to retire a King when he is ready.

Maybe we can pluck someone from the Spurs scouting department..I'm not sure who's out there but I think this team needs a fresh pair of eyes and a different perspective on how to construct this team..

Hmm ... Spurs have done well drafting role players and finding diamonds in the rough, but I think a large part of that is Pop's ability to coach them into a cohesive unit.

Lets get thru most of the year to see where Coach can take Petrie's talent load then look at this topic again. If things turn out well and Kings end up sniffing the butts of the dogs in 8th place in the west, they will drop down to 18-20 in the draft making draft decisions less critical and the trade-free agent market becoming the more important.

Considering the limitations imposed by the Maloofs the last 3-4 years Petrie has done a very good job. And, as pointed out, who is available to step in?

The strongest argument for Petrie seems to be that the Kings owners are so inept and cheap that they are unlikely to hire a mediocre GM to replace him. That speaks volumes about the dysfunction the Maloofs have permeated the franchise with. When we stunk in the 90s, we were just bad. We’ve become the Clippers.

I think it needs to also be pointed out, that although Pop's doesn't hold the title of GM, he is the president of operations as well as coach. Which means he has the final say as to who they draft or trade for. He has all the power within the orginization, including the power to fire the GM, who he hand picked.

Considering he has to work with the Maloofs and their extreme cheapness, I think GP has done a decent job. I don't trust the Maloofs to hire a GM that's any good and is most likely would be worse than GP. Not only that, but I can't imagine anybody wanting the job, unless they are so desperate to get their first break at being a GM, they'd take anything.
