Free Agent SF Options

Why do I get the feeling we'll end up with a guy like Wright or Barnes. Could be worse but nothing to be happy about.

I jsut really hope we don't go after a guy like Beasley. Carmichael Dave tweeted he thinks Petrie might go after him. I hope that's more of CD stating an opinion on basketball where he doesn't really know much(although he's been great for the city), compared to what would be far worse which would be he actually heard from someone on the inside that Beasley is someone we might target. HE brought up Aaron Brooks as a target as well.

This really just better be CD spouting off his opinions rather than hinting at something he heard from someone in the inside. Combined with the rumor that we are still interested in Crawford which I saw a few weeks ago I'm not at all confident.

is beasley a good defender? i dont know much about him other than he's a pretty good jump shooter. Doesnt he have a attitude problem too?

As much as I would like us to sign a SF and that shot blocker, I think we will re-sign JT, maybe T-Will, see if we can pick up something from the amnesty waivers (hello Jose Calderon) and call it a day.

We are financially shot and the nightmare that is known as last off-season has hamstrung us for years to come. Salmons ($8million), Hayes ($5million) and Outlaw ($3million) has hamstrung us for the duration of those contracts. That is $16million tied up in players that are not producing or do not fit. The problem also is that all those have another 3 years to go (except Salmons whose last year is partially guaranteed).

Of those, Outlaw is the only one that could prove value for money. I am saying this because he showed signs of being the player we thought he would be late in the season and also remembering that he had a broken wrist (or was it hand) at the start of the season which no doubt would take time to get over. So he is not a lost cause - YET.

Hayes also had injury riddled season but if as planned we re-sign JT, he essentially becomes a highly overpriced 4th big man on the roster and that is trouble with our ownership group.

Garcia is finally essentially an expiring deal and might be valuable in a trade provided that we are prepared to take on salary which we obviously are not.

So essentially, with Garcia ($6M), Hayes ($5M), Salmons ($8M) and Outlaw ($3M) we have $22 million of committed contracts for next season. Lets assume that the salary cap will be $58 million (might be more) and the fact that we must spend a minimum of 85% of this ($49.5M), then then that $22 million accounts for almost half of our overall salary for next year.

We will try to get something done via trade but I am not expecting us to sign any free agents that can come in and be productive. What we might try to do is be "smart" about it and take risks in hope that they pan out and that for us generally leads to the SAR, Mikki Moore, John Slamons, Garcia, Chuck Hayes type outcomes and I for one am sick of those.

This is going to be one of the most challenging off-seasons for us in a long long time, if not ever. We have no money to spend, ugly contracts on the books, a dark cloud over the franchise because of ownership and their inability to spend or contribute to a new arena. We have been red-flagged by the draftees and I am pretty sure that free agents would not be too thrilled to sign on long term with Sacramento with so much uncertainty and question marks regarding ownership. When Sterling was being Sterling you didn't have top FA signing for Clippers and they had the luxury of being in a big market.

Ideally, I would love to get someone like Batum but there is no way we can afford him unless we are doing some sort of sign and trade in which case you have to ask the questions why would Portland want to take one some ugly contracts that we have.

I would be amazed of we improve significantly this off-season. At best it will be minor lateral moves.

Since everyone is giving a lineup, here's mine.

IT/Fredette
Evans/Thornton/Salmons
Batum/Williams/Outlaw/Honeycutt - if not Batum, maybe Dorell Wright, AK, T. Prince, and lastly, Michael Beasley. Yeah, I'm getting desperate here!
JT/Robinson
Cousins/Whiteside/Hayes

I really like Williams coming off the Bench with Fredette. They played well off one another last season, and I would like to grow that. I'd also like legit size at the SF position, meaning I'm tired of 6'6" players there. Actually I'm starting to develop a complex with 6'6" players. Finally, we need to somehow rid ourselves of some of the dead wood. I don't have the answer as to how to accomplish that, but it needs to be done.

Or we could sign Landry Fields. Once again, I bring him up and nobody comments on him. Is he just someone we don't discuss? A bad omen? What is it?

Shooting guard

After his rookie season btw I would have said a possibel roleplaying SG to put next to Reke. But in any case, a SG, not a SF.

The problem is, that so called Leech as you call him, is going to make close to 8 mil a year for the next three years. I know the Maloofs won't listen to what I suggest, but if your going to pay him to just sit on the bench, then amnesty him and pay him to be gone. At least that way you get some salary cap flexabiltiy. Some team will pick up part of his salary.

By the way, I was looking that the Warriors roster, and they now have Richard Jefferson, Harrison Barnes, Draymond Green, and Dorell Wright at the SF position. Its rumored that they're shopping Dorell Wright. He's not the perfect fit, but he's not bad. He plays decent to good defense. He's shot around 38% from the three for his career. He's a decent rebounder for a SF. Not sure what they would want for him other than a salary dump. He has legit size at 6'9", and he's an expiring contract. So it would be a one year tryout.

And a QO to Rush.

He's around 6'7.5" in shoes, with a 6'10" wingspan, and a 8'9" standing reach (T. Robinson has a 8'10") so he definitely has the height and length to play SF. Why is it that he is a SG versus a SF? Is it that he is not very strong so he can't guard stronger SFs? I think he weighs around 215 right now and is still in his second season. I'm sure if he wanted to he could add more weight.

He literally has all the same measurements as Batum who is someone we all covet. Height in shoes 6'8", standing reach 8'9", and weight 215. The only major difference is wingspan where he has a 3 inch advantage at 7'1". Seeing as how Batum and Fields have similar weights, I'm not so sure the strength argument can play a role here, but you can prove me wrong if you would like. :p

I wouldn't mind Dorell Wright at all. Would solve our SF shooting woes for sure. He's not a lock down defender but were not going to find a Shane Battier so we might as well just work with what we can get.

Then again the team is owned by the Maloof's, so any free agent talk is probably moot.

Mavs believe they can move Shawn Marion and/or Vince Carter to create cap room, but are waiting it out for now, league source says.

Ok, this name could fit the defensive athlete SF role. Dreadful from three point range. Never going to find that perfect package of offense and defense.

Marion would be fantastic. He's still one of the best/most versatile perimeter defenders in the NBA and he's not looking to shoot or score anymore. I could dig him for another 2 years while we search for a more long-term replacement

Cisco for Marion works out as a trade, though it's not a huge salary dump for Dallas. Outlaw for Marion is a larger salary dump, but I don't know if Dallas wants Outlaw's longer contract.

Batum is literally perfect. Great 3pt shooter who can spot up. Great defender who can block shots. Good rebounder. Tall, long, and athletic. And he doesn't demand shots. He would be perfect for us.

A lot of people have mentioned trading Thornton for him in a sign and trade. I think it will take a lot more than that. Batum has more value than Thornton and the Blazers already have Matthews which diminishes Thornton's value even more. If we propose something like Thornton and Thompson for Batum then they will listen. If they accepted this and we resigned Williams and signed Fields are lineup would look like this:

Evans/Thomas/Fredette
Fields/Salmons/Garcia
Batum/Williams/Outlaw/Honeycutt
Robinson/Hayes
Cousins/Whiteside

With Thompson gone, it will obviously put a lot of pressure on Robinson, but I think he will be just fine. This trade will also allow Whiteside to finally see some significant action by being the 4th big. Hopefully this will help him develop into the shotblocker we all hope he can be. Cousins, Robinson, and Whiteside could be a very formidable rotation in the future if everything works out. By surrounding Evans with Fields and Batum, it gives him two good 3pt shooters to dish it out to while he breaks down the defense. This lineup would also be a supreme rebounding lineup. All 5 of these starters are above average rebounders for their position. We would be dominating our opponents on the glass every night. This would also eliminate small ball trotting out a lineup of 6'5", 6'7", 6'8", 6'9", and 6'11". Thomas and Williams will be our difference makers off the bench providing scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, and energy.

I'm assuming the cap room they would want to create would be instant room right now so they could sign Deron or Dwight or somebody. If so, then only teams like ourselves with open capspace could be the partner. Not about ending contracts. Be about pure money right now.

The only real hope to get Batum is that he's apparently very unhappy with Portland after they didn't offer him an extension this year. If Batum truly wants out of Portland, he won't sign an offer sheet from anybody, because Portland will almost certainly match and he'd then be stuck there for the length of the contract. Instead, his best move is to threaten to accept the QO, and become an unrestricted FA in 2013. Then, have another team (coordinated, of course) come to Portland with a S&T offer. At that point, the deal for Portland becomes either one year of Batum, and nothing afterwards, or whoever they can get in the S&T. It's possible that faced with a scenario like that, Portland might prefer 3 years of Thornton at a market-value contract to one year of Batum. But that's really our only hope.

Doubt his agent would do that. It's a big risk to turn down the money. All it takes is blowing out a knee.

Well, yeah. He'd be perfect for lots of teams. Which is why we pretty have no shot at getting him unless its through trade which I'm not sure we have the pieces for.

You're right, I think that's our only hope. I get the feeling though that he's going to be remaining in Portland for the foreseeable future - especially if DL plays well for them.

It has been done before, though. Point being, however small a chance it is, I think it's the only one. Portland almost certainly matches any offer sheet, so the only way to get him is through a sign-and-trade, and that probably only happens if he convinces Portland he's out after a year.

I'm not counting on Batum, mind you. It's a super longshot.

IT & Evans
Cuz
JT
Outlaw

TR the rook, Hayes and Whiteside getting "bigs" minutes
MT as 6th man, TWill, Honeycutt at the 3
Fredette as PG off bench
fish and Cisco as whatever

I like bajaden idea, Dorel Wright as FA 3 with his 8 yr experience

can someone tell me why we didnt give twill a QO? also what about ersan illaysove as SF?

Ersan would be a great option and considering he in all likelyhood would come at a lower price than AK47 or Batum could be a perfect fit for the front court and I say with a straight face that JT could have played his last game as a King.

Sam Amick just tweeted that the Blazers have offered Roy Hibbert a Max Contract!...We might have a chance to offer Batum a decent sized contract and the Blazers wont be able to match!!!
