Well, despite our win (and who could lose against a team as inept as the Bobcats?) we picked up 13 lotto combos with Detroit eliminating us and the Warriors making the grievous error of winning in Minnesota and pushing themselves to the 8th spot, where they are likely to lose their lottery pick. Unfortunately, the Hornets completely blew a double-digit lead against the Clippers to slip ahead of us into the #3 slot.

Although by the end of tomorrow our floor will still be the 8th lotto slot, there are three games to watch. Two of them have playoff implications, with Philadelphia (traveling to New Jersey) and Milwaukee (hosting Toronto) both fighting for the final playoff slot in the East. Hopefully for us both New Jersey and Toronto can bring their spoiler games. The other game of interest is Cleveland's trip to Memphis, where Cleveland tries to move ahead of us in the win column.

Toronto got New Jersey in the last game of the season - 1 of them HAVE to win, so we can put 1 more team together with Detroit that is out of our reach if we loose to the Thunder.

Basically aslong as we don't royally screw ourselfs up with 2 more wins, and at the very least loose to the Thunder which seems even more likely without DeMarcus - we're guaranteed to be MINIMUM tied for 5th together with one of Toronto/New Jersey.

If we end up loosing both guys(as we should) - we're looking at either(from worst to best)

2 way tie for 4th with Cleveland

3 way tie for 3rd with Cleveland and New Orleans

sole position of the 4th worst spot

2 way tie for 3rd with New Orleans/Cleveland

sole position of the 3rd worst spot.

Basically in terms of the draft and the pick itself - If we win 1 game we go realistically(assuming there's no Derrick Rose-Bulls-2008 type upset) pick from 4th to 7th in the draft(considering we don't enter top 3) - and if we loose both our pick will be something like 4th to 6th pick(with better odds to advance to the top 3 obviously)

Add to the hope list... Cleveland plays their last home game of the year against Wizards, and are having a Fan appreciation night. Hopefully we can add at least 1 more win to them

After beating the cats so badly i feel we will come out and compete hard in these last 2 games with Tyreke featuring.

A strong finish to the season that sees us reducing our odds and moving lower in the draft is a possibility
 
I'm hoping that DMC appeals his suspension and plays against the Thunder because they will likely lose with or without him. Then, serve the suspension against the Lakers since that potentially could be a winnable game because it's at home and against the Lakers.

I want to win the Lakers game, draft position be damned. It's a lottery and folks move up every year. I WILL NOT root for a loss against the Lakers, ever.

Oh, I see the big picture. I see Cousins and Evans and the rest tired of losing all the time. I see a big final home game coming up against the team we all love to hate. I see reasons to keep trying to win instead of increasing a theoretical chance at ping-pong balls that have no guarantee of going our way since they never do anyways.

I see your point, but will winning one game change anything in the big picture? Cousins and Evans is not going to be all happy now that we beat the Lakers in the final game in a meaningless game for us. We still have the same pathetic owners and coach. It's not just the ping pong balls, it's the SLOT that you're in because the Kings are notorious for sliding down in the lottery. Being a 3rd or 4th slot guarantees you can't get worse than 6th or 7th draft pick, which in this draft is important.

Which in EVERY draft is important, not just this one. But every win helps with perception, even the "meaningless" ones, especially when you have owners and a coach not helping as much as they should. Big picture - progress to the future with the young players we have. If we get to 3rd pre-lottery and pat ourselves on the back but whoever is in 4th wins the "lottery", we will sit here and say "how come we couldn't have come in 4th"? Really, the lottery takes care of itself - I want to start winning every damn game we can at this point. We have to turn this attitude that losing is OK around. And I NEVER root for a Kings loss to the Lakers. Ever.

This isn't every draft. Its one with some talent at the top end that could change the direction of a franchise. But its also a deep draft, so you'll get a good player all the way down into the middle of the first round. But if someone told me that if I lose my game against the Lakers, I'm guaranteed the 1st pick in the draft, meaning Anthony Davis, I'd swallow my pride and forfeit the damm game. Now on the other hand, if I'm a player on the Kings, I would do everything in my power to win that game. Because I can't stand losing.

Fortunately, we have no power over the outcome, and whether I wish for a win or a loss, my wish will have no effect one way or the other. So as Doris Day sang in the movie "The man who knew too much", "Whatever willl be, will be".

Oh, agreed. But my point is (and I am not pointing this your direction), you CAN'T know ahead of time if this will occur or not. And that is the reason I don't root for losses. It could be the team that barely misses the playoffs that jumps to the front to get the number one pick. You never know. Given the draft and lottery setup as is, I will NOT root for a loss.

I sort of approach it as a win/win situation. If we actually win the game, well, Yi Pi, we won the game. But if we lose the game, then Yi Pi, our odds in the lottery are better. At least that works for me. But then I probably approach the game of basketball and the Kings a little differently than most people. I don't even know if I can explain it properly. Lets just say, that even though I root for the Kings, I try and watch every game as an outside observer with no dog in the hunt. I play mental games with myself at times, by watching a Kings game and pretending I'm rooting for the other team. Then from that point of view, I try and judge which player on the Kings team is doing the most damage.

Which is why I seldom get involved in the game thread. I find it very distracting, and many times too prejudical. I'm not interested in finding faults with every player on our team, or promoting my favorite player. Anyway, thats the best explaination I can give. Probably comes from watching college basketball, and not really having a home team. As a result, my favorite team in college changes every year. Yes, its usually a good team, but more importantly, its a team thats also fun to watch.
 
The Cavs and Raptors made valiant efforts but fell short in the end, as did the Nets, so no help today. As was pointed out above, the Raptors and the Nets play in the final game, and somebody has to win, meaning that our worst-case scenario is a three-way tie for 6/7/8, so I've updated our minimum number of lotto combos.

Tomorrow there are two relevant games. First, we go to face the Thunder, presumably without DeMarcus - there's not a lot of hope that we'll win that one, especially since OKC still has a chance at the #1 seed in the West. Edit: San Antonio locked up #1 after I wrote this and Harden was announced to be out. So maybe we've got more of a chance. Second, the Hornets travel to Oakland to take on the Warriors - here a Warriors win ensures us no worse than a tie for 7th, while a Hornets win keeps us alive for sole possession of the #3 spot (pending our result in OKC).

I think with 2 games left a win tommorow would be counterproductive at this point. Haven't bothered paying that game this year, but with so many teams stacked wihtin 1 win of each other, its a pretty obvious consideration this late in the season. How silly would it be to win 1 meaningless April game and slide 4 draft positions because of it? to avoid teams tanking in these situations they should just let you forfeit. :)

Yeah, plus Metta won't be playing against us, and if Clips loose, Lakers could rest their team as well. That indian burial ground is working it's magic!
