Big Man in free agency

I'm a Brandon Bass fan. 6-8, 250, 24 years old, averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 boards in 19 minutes last year. Runs the floor well too. Unrestricted free agent if I'm not mistaken. He can back-up Thompson.

Yeah I agree with you.

Right now my big board of FA bigs looks like this:

1. Anderson Varejao
2. Brandon Bass
3. Marcin Gortat
4. Charlie V.
5. Ike Diogu

What do you guys think about Channing Frye? Portland didn't offer him a qualifying offer making him an unrestricted FA.

I think there is a very good reason Portland didn't offer him a qualifying offer. I heard he was kicked out of his knitting club for being too soft as well. What a waste of a 6'11" body. Makes me mad sometimes. Put me in that body, and after a summer spent lifting to gain some actual muscle mass, I would gleefully splat anything smaller than Shaq. Put that weenie in it and he practically squeals everytime he accidentally gets close enough to somebody to bump into them. Waste of good physical genes (well good for bball anyway).

kicked outta the knitting club LAWL

You want Baron Davis? The guy who mailed it in last year for the Clips? That's the last guy I'd want.

I didn't say we were getting Baron. We're not in a spot to even ponder that. But if the Clips plan to move him and think they can, then the spot would be opened up for Beno.

Ahh, well if they move Davis to a team other than the Kings, then yes, I'd be all in favor trading Beno to them. When dealing with the Clips or Minn, we should be asking for outrageous compensation in a trade. Their #1 pick for next year, unrestricted...

Read on ESPN that with Boozer, Okur and Kutcher returning, the Jazz are $3 million into the luxury tax, even before you start talking about Millsap. Fesenko is raw, but still 7-1 and only entering his 3rd season. We could do worse for a backup C, and I bet the Jazz would be willing to sell him for a future 2nd since even getting rid of his small, $800,000 contract would save them $1.6 million in luxury tax payments.

Yeah, or alternately they might be eager to keep him as a cheap backup solution rather than paying another big contract.

Theo Ratliff?

Im not sure if he's done after his contract expires with the 76ers last season. But if he's available, we can sign him cheap for maybe 2 yrs so he can show our young guys how to block shots. Based on 76er's playoff run, he still got a good motor even at 36.

Joel Anothony ( Big Time Shot Blocker)

We should take a look at Joel Anthony. The dude averaged 1.4 BPG in 16 MPG on the Heat and played 68 games starting 28 of them. He's still pretty young at 26 and I think we could get him pretty cheap. If he can clog up the lane for 16 minutes a game behind spencer and Jason and Average that many blocks that would be perfect for this team.
Plus he's Canadian and I would love to see a canadian play for my favorite squad.

^ this video pretty much sums his whole game up.

What if S.A does not offer Drew Gooden a Contract? What kind of offer will he command? He might be a nice back up for jason.

No.

And we really don't need a backup for Jason per se -- we need a bcakup for Spencer. We need a defensive anchor int he box.

Given the limited availabilty of bigs in the FA pool, I think there's a good chance that we fill the hole via trade or training camp scrub (or both).

I have a feeling that the Maloofs want to stay under the cap this year due to financial problems - so can't see us signing anyone at the 5-7 million level, nor do I see anyone really worth that money (or will take it) at this point.

I can see us picking up a journeyman or draft bust...and in that case, it really doesn't matter as we're not a playoff team.

Well I guess thats pretty much the final word on it.

Given all the talk of financial state of the organization coming out, I would be surprised if we made a splash in the FA market.

And in our current situation, it doesn't make sense either. We need to get some young prospects on the cheap to fill up our roster (Ike, Fesenenko). If we can't, or feel they aren't good enough even for the minimum or so, then we should think of a veteran mentor.

Honestly, there isnt a big out there that would be ideal for us. We need a defensive big who can rebound.

Gortat is a nice player, but he isnt anything special on defense .. I like ZaZa, he is tough, but again he doesnt give you a whole lot on D. Varejao is a good defender, but too expensive for us, I think we should just offer someone, like Patrick O bryant a 1 yr deal as a stopgap big man for this year until we can find that long term third big .. I just see no reason to sign someone to a contract longer than 1 year if he isnt the guy we really want. We have to be careful here, every move from here on out has to be done the right way and with a real purpose, no more chances unless its for cheap money or 1 year.

One more name, not sure what Desegana Diop's contract status is, but I like him as a potential backup C for this season.

What would it take to get either JaVale Mcgee or Andrey Blatch from Washington? Mcgee is a little over 1 mil with 1 year and team option for 2nd year. Blatch is just under 3 mil with 3 years left.

I would love to get Blatche. I'd give up Noc/greene.

We may have to take back a contract such as Songaila. Which would actually fill our bench out with that guy thats been around and could play a few min here or there if needed and not be a disaster type guy.

I do have reservations about trading Greene though. could it just be Noc for Blatch and Songlia?

Songaila was in the Miller/Foye trade. He's a Timberwolf now.

I like Blatche's potential too, but he might be a bigger knuckle-head than Greene. I like him more as a guy to watch for on someone else's team than a drain on our payroll who might never pan out.

I am starting to warm up to the idea of a trade with Indiana. Beno for Tinsley and Hibbert. BUT we must send Tinsley packing immediatley after the trade clears the NBA office.

Brockman is not a serious consideration at his size -- Geoff specifically mentioned needing to get some more size up front (and gee, is this even the same guys specializing in midgets for half a decade?). Brockman is tough, but he's not size, and we still have a major MAJOR issue in shutting down the middle. I think we were dead last in the league in points in the paint against us last year. We need help. BIG help.

I know but I also thought that if the organization really believe in him then I didn’t think that we would be going after anybody this offseason. Also, you have to look at the guys available this summer – is there a guy out there that will please the Kings? The main guy I saw that we would possibly go after was Gortat but that seems like that’s not going to happen – it’s been reported that Gortat is going to the Mavs. Plus, I'm not sure we would have offered him enough money to come here.

What would people think of Leon Powe? He would certainly be in line with the whole tough persona Geoff seems to have bought into. He's only 25 and he can score and rebound. Not a shotblocker though. Lives in the paint and is a decent defender. I think he'd be a nice signing for part of the MLE. We'd still need a big shotblocker to clog the paint, but Powe could be a key reserve down the line.

Plus, he's a great person. Has overcame alot to get where he is and he's a worker and a fighter. Would bring more of that toughness.

Tough call considering he probably won't play most of, if not all of next season. So....I don't see the kings doing it.

Fabricio Oberto

Once Fabricio Oberto clears waivers in Detroit on July 7, there will be several teams courting the ex-San Antonio Spurs forward, including Washington, Phoenix, Sacramento and Indiana, sources say. There’s still a strong possibility he could return to the Spurs, who traded him as part of the Richard Jefferson deal last month.

though not the biggest name out there, he might be a serviceable big guy off the bench. but i hope we dont overpay to try to get him.

Well gee do I find it comforting that the names we are getting associated with in this free agent market are 30-soemthing guys like Stephon Marbury and Francisco Oberto. Yeah that'll fix our problems. Oberto lost his minutes last year to Matt Bonner. Matt Bonner. Think about that.

ORRRR agents say things to ignorant media types and use Sacramento's name as 'leveraging' power, since we're one of how many teams left that actually have cap room to make more than a minimum or exception level offer. Get used to it as I think OKC and Sacto are the two remaining teams with cap space once PDX agrees to terms with Lee.
