Big Man in free agency

ORRRR agents say things to ignorant media types and use Sacramento's name as 'leveraging' power, since we're one of how many teams left that actually have cap room to make more than a minimum or exception level offer. Get used to it as I think OKC and Sacto are the two remaining teams with cap space once PDX agrees to terms with Lee.

this is possible too, but its the sheer ridiculous of these names beign associated with us that is worrisome. If you are an agent making up a rumor, aren't you going to make up one that makes sense? These guys are MLE or less players -- their agents could pick any team in the NBA, and yet they decided to say we are interested?

Oberto isnt what this team needs, but if he ends up being our backup center for one year then so be it... There really isnt a good long term option at backup C out there for us anyways..

i dont like any of them... we need to look to trade for the players that we need. this is where trading miller really hurts us. we cant trade nocioni, just like we couldnt trade thomas... we were better off keeping him because i cant think of a single team that would take on his contract.

Well gee do I find it comforting that the names we are getting associated with in this free agent market are 30-soemthing guys like Stephon Marbury and Francisco Oberto. Yeah that'll fix our problems. Oberto lost his minutes last year to Matt Bonner. Matt Bonner. Think about that.

But SA isn't perfect with their front office decisions! They don't know what they're doing anymore. I mean, come one, they just gave up on that Beno guy and he was a great diamond in the rough pick up for us!

Ideal:

We pick up some scrub on the cheap to platoon with Brockman for the bench big minutes... Hawes/JT/Brockman/??? isnt a great frontline, but it will still be the best frontline we've had since the Webber/Vlade days!!! (Obviously I was not a fan of Miller/SAR of Mikki/Miller).

In 2010 draft:
We get one of Favors, Davis, Monroe (unless Brick's dream comes true and we get Wall)...I actually think there's a couple more PF/Cs slated to go top 6. Next years draft is big on bigs.

JT/Hawes/2010top6(I assume)draft pick....Good young frontline!!!

I just dont like the FA options for bigs this offseason. Lee is overrated, Birdman is too old, Millsap probably isnt going anywhere, the best one is Boozer, and isnt he sticking around in Utah another year? We'd have to swing a trade. Ew.

Lets just sign a scrubble to a cheap movable contract and cross our fingers in the 2010 lotto. Either way we're going to be a superior team to last year.

Unfortunately, not a lot of them look to be big defensive difference-makers, other than Alabi who could be Thabeet 2.0. Maybe Favors as more of a weak-side blocker.

Bigs worth a multi-year contract....
Chris Andersen – don’t think we have a snowball’s chance to sign him, but would give him a 3 year contract at the MLE in a heartbeat.
Ike Diogu – I don’t think we should throw MLE money at him, but I’m intrigued enough by his wingspan and his exhibition at the end of the season to think he’s worth keeping.
Leon Powe – There seems to be a lot of buzz about him, and on one hand Boston didn’t think he’d be worth a paltry 1 million, on the other hand he’s going to miss half of next season. He’s one of those guys who we might be able to sign for a relatively cheap multi-year contract, and not get our moneys worth this year, but reap the benefits down the road.
Brandon Bass – I think he’ll will be demanding somthing around the MLE. I’m lukewarm to the idea of spending that kind of money on him.

Still young, maybe some upside.....
Zaza Pachulia – Not sure if how much he’d cost. Is another team going to offer him mid-level exception type of money? Doubt it. Maybe he’d be a bargain on a team where a third big man is likely to see a few minutes...
Shelden Williams – As a lottery pick he’s a bust, and maybe he’s undervalued now as a result. Shelden always seemed to play hard, and if the price is right I think he could be a valuable back-up.

Vets, you know what you’re going to get in limited minutes.
Brian Skinner – why not? He plays hard, plays defense, blocks shots, and rebounds. The ceiling isn’t too high, but Skinner also doesn’t spend a lot of time injured.
Rasho Nesterovic – again, in limited minutes Rasho is worth a 1 or 2 year vet’s minimum contract. He was never worth the big contract that the Spurs gave to him, but plays solid, unspectacular ball and doesn’t spend much time in street clothes.

Ike Diogu – I don’t think we should throw MLE money at him, but I’m intrigued enough by his wingspan and his exhibition at the end of the season to think he’s worth keeping.

If we were going to throw MLE money at him, we would have made a qualifying offer (which was less than the MLE). We didn't, which means that if we want him back, we want him for less money. Something like 2 years, $2M per year might be a reasonable expectation for a Diogu contract if we sign him.

We should just pickup Joel Anthony and Ike Diogu For cheap with like 2 year deals. Test them and see if they pan out if not we'll get a big via trade or draft next year.

IMO it's much better to add veteran big to this team. Vet big men already knows that they have to live as backup but at the same time guide our young bigs how to survive long and effective in the league.

Here's a few:

Rasho Nesterovic(33) - Has played solid minutes in his early career with solid bigs like Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, and Chris Bosh. He'll bring personal experience to teach our young bigs how those great players play and practice.
Brian Skinner(33) - A journey man big who does not live at the end of the bench and has consistently contributed good enough 10-15mins throughout his career.
Jamaal Magloire(31) - One-time all-star that seems to have slowly gained a few steps back last season.
Theo Ratliff(36) - Solid defensive C throughout his career. Even at this age, he still knows how to block shots. Can be good mentor to both Hawes and JT.
Adonal Foyle(34) - Another defensive big who can teach shotblocking to our young frontline. Im not sure about this, but Dwight Howards blocks per game showed solid increase year by year after they got Foyle.

Our teams big hole now is a backup C. And the C position does not require too much running around, so I believe getting vets above their 30s would still be a good addition. Just don't sign them beyond 3 yrs. and over 4M per year.

i have a feeling petrie is going to sign channing frye to a contract to backup hawes and jt.... a contract of maybe 2yrs for 5.4mil....

frye would serve to fill in two backup spots, center and pf and he has skills... as opposed to signing diogu, frye can backup the center.... he would then give brockman every opportunity to back up the power forward spot....

PF Thompson Brockman Thomas
SF Nocioni Greene Caspi
C Hawes Frye
SG Martin Garcia
PG Evans Rodriguez Udrich

+ he'd give the cheerleaders someone they could beat up for his lunch money

We really need to pickup that extra big man, if anything to challenge Spencer Hawes for that starting center spot. That dude is not even going to participate in the Summer League due "family commitments." Spencer knows his job is secure so why even bother to practice... Shouldn't have let him hang around with Brad Miller so much. sigh

Spencer's young enough, but as a general rule summer league really isn't for guys who are already starters aorund the league. Kevin and Artest did that a couple of years ago, and that's really not the purpose of the league. You're supposed to be getting a first look at draftees, a feel for undrafted free agents etc. Major NBA contributors are mostly just wasting their and ours, so its probably just as well we get a better look at Brockman, ths big kid from Santa Clara etc..

At first glane I was a little disapointed because obviously the Kings wanted him to go to. But I think you're right. If he's thinking of focusing his time in the weight room instead, I'm especially more ok with it.
