Big Man in free agency

Actually, I think that's the question of the offseason. They've got a logjam up front, and they've got to clear minutes for Griffin. They shouldn't trade Kaman because he's relatively young (27), though they are on the hook for three years and $34M. I don't imagine they even CAN trade Randolph. So Camby, 35 years old and on the last year of his deal could be the odd man out.

The only problem is that Camby is still pretty good, and has a desirable $9.7M ender. So they may actually get some decent trade offers for him. We don't have a lot to offer. We could send Beno at 4 years and $27M which saves them almost $4M this year but then sits on their cap forever. Granted, Dunleavy was after him last year and they don't have a backup point, but I don't know if they're so desperate for Baron insurance to do that.

On our side, it would be ideal. Get out of Beno's contract, get a shot-blocking and rebounding third big man for the rotation, and clear PT for Evans. If only I could convince myself it could happen...
I very much doubt they would take on Beno. If they do that, I suspect we might need to throw in a pick (lottery protected) to get that over the line. I just can't see a taker for Beno. Not at that price.

I was thinking more along the lines of KT and some candy for Camby. We lose nothing in terms of cap flexibility but get a useful player. Then again I can't see Clippers doing that either.

KT and Beno maybe if they are actually serious about moving Baron -- eh and Dunleavy are oil and water.

chris wilcox would be exilent!

He doesn;t do the thing we need iether.

Just signing some random medicore soid veteran doesn't get us anywhere. We need an interior defender. A big one. Someone who can protect that rim and muscle with the big boys.

I'd do that deal every day of the week and twice on sundays! Get a defensive big (with an expiring deal) and get rid of your worst contract. Hell I would even throw in a pick if they are up for it.

I guess there might be some hope based purely on the relationship between Baron and Dunleavy but I would be amazed if they were prepared to take on Beno's contract. I know they were after him in when Beno was a FA but I think they might be feeling a bit lucky that they dodged a bullet with Beno.

How about a trade of Beno for Nazr Mohammad, straight up.

Beno will be useful for the Bobcats if they let Felton go.
Mohammad on the other hand is a veteran big who only have 2 yrs. left on his contract and should be able toughen up our young frontline.

I was actually thinking the same thing but for Diop, but because I thought he was still on Dallas, who was rumored to be interested in Beno at the deadline. I don't imagine the Bobcats would be terribly interested, considering they still have Augustin at the point and could find a cheaper backup if they wished (I'm guessing they'll end up signing Iverson, too, for the MLE). Maybe, though, they consider Nazr/Diop redundant and would consider swapping one for a position of need.

No interest. He is very very small and there is a reason the Grizzlies have been disasters at his position. Very soft. Cisco sized. Can score some, but that is not what we need. We need a big ole defender. We get bullied and run through/over like children out there. We don't just need any ole big guy (if Warrick even qualifies as "big"). We need someone to try to cover up our shtoblocking/rebounding/toughness issues up front. That Warrick cannot do.

^^ the truth

Chris Anderson won't do either -- we need a banger type who can come in, defend the post, and push people around. A charles oakley or haslem type PF

I wonder what it would take to get Camby from the Clippers?!

I would think not a lot and he would be a perfect fit for us. Defensive presence, rebounding, shotblocking and he is an expiring contract so it doesn't affect our plans for the salary cap space in 2010.

pretty pointless trade, temporary solution for a long term problem...

I think a 2010 expiring is worth more than that. Camby has great value..but to a contender, not us.

thing is that Camby is a 2010 ender as well, and a BIGGER ender than KT. that would kind of be the pont. Dump some salary, and have a better ender than we did before to either patch our lineup or draw some trade flies.

That was my angle as well. Get a player that addresses a need but doesn't affect the cap flexibility going into 2010.

Just out of interest Brick, would you go after Gortat and what would you offer him?!

gortat should go to a contender, he will get mle money and a team will pick him up especially since orlando said that they wouldnt match any mle type offers.... he should go to cleveland or san antonio....

frye will be available, he wont cost that much either.

Sam Amick said Via Twitter that we shouldnt expect much out of the kings in Free agency. Just a big...probably someone like Diogu and that is all.

Looks like Varejao will be available. He will opt out of his contract tonight. He's still only 26, 6'11" and a great help defender and offensive rebounder. Could he be the young big this team is looking to grow with. I like the look of that 3 man rotation going forward with Spencer Hawes, Jason Thompson, and Anderson Varejao :).

I would LOVE to get Anderson. In fact, he is my top rated FA big now. Problem being, some other teams might be willing to pay more for him than us.

Doesn't surprise me that much since their aren't many FA players that are young and we would be willing to sign for 4-5 yrs. But, I don't see how this roster stays the same through training camp. We might not sign a FA, but I think the chances are pretty good that we will be involved in a trade or two this summer. When you have 4 small forwards, 2 bigs, and beno, you still need to make some moves. At the very least we need to open up some playing time for Donte and Omri.

I have Anderson and Gortat at the top my list. I'd be happy with either one. Gortat is younger so maybe he'd be my first preference.

why Anderson? I know he can block shots and is a decent rebounder, but the guy is just as bad on D as JT and Hawes..

don't you guys think we need someone who can atleast play some decent D in the post?

First off, I don't agree that he's that bad a defender. He's a good weakside defender. Does he have trouble holding position in the post? Yes, but all in all he would at least bring something the Kings need and that is shotblocking. You've got to remember that were not talking about getting an all star here. Were talking about someone that can give us 15 or so minutes off the bench at a reasonable price.

You also have to remember that everything wasn't Hawes and Thompsons fault. They were constantly caught in switches defending the pick and roll where Beno or whoever never switched back. There was simply a lack of good team defense. Hopefully with new coaching some of their problems will be solved.

He's a great help defender, and he takes a charge better than anyone...He is also an excellent rebounder, which contributes to defense. He doesn't block many shots though, and can be beaten-up by more athletic specimens, but for a back-up, he'd be perfect for the right price.

I wonder what it would take to sign both Varejao and Villeanueva this summer. Both are young unrestricted free agents who can be spot starters, or solid bench bigs. If the Kings could snag both they could have a sweet offense for defense substitution pattern, and a pretty deep bench too :).

PG: Tyreke Evans/Sergio Rodriguez/Beno Udrih/Bobby Jackson?
SG: Kevin Martin/Francisco Garcia/Tyreke Evans
SF: Andres Nocioni/Francisco Garcia/Omri Casspi/Dante Greene
PF: Jason Thompson/Charlie Villeanueva/Andres Nocioni/Jon Brockman
C: Spencer Hawes/Anderson Varejao/Jason Thompson

I don't expect us to sign more than one or 2 players maximum.

I would to for one of those players to be Gortat. Ike is just not what we need. Gortat has the size, toughness, defence, rebounding and is a good shotblocker. He would be my #1 target. Maybe even give him one of those deals that start high and go lower just to manage the salary cap better.

I don't think Nocioni get traded before the trade deadline. I think we keep him for his toughness and a bit of leadership. Let him build his numbers up and trade him to a contender mid-season.

I happen to think that he would also be a very good mentor to Casspi. I could see us making trades but nothing massive. Its all about aquiring young talent and clearing the capspace for 2010 (unless you get a change to trade for an All-star in the mean time)

I would think that when we approach the trade deadline we will get some very good offers for Kt's expiring + Noc.

I'm a Brandon Bass fan. 6-8, 250, 24 years old, averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 boards in 19 minutes last year. Runs the floor well too. Unrestricted free agent if I'm not mistaken. He can back-up Thompson.

He could, and he's a quality backup 4 on offense. He 100% does not address the problem/need upfront though, which is on the other side of the court.

Hmm, so both Boozer and Okur opted to stay with the Jazz for another year. Does that make it easier to nab Fesenko for a future 2nd?
