Preface
I am not sure how many years each of us has under his belt. I suspect I am not the oldest guy participating. But from the teams’ evolution I also fear that there are much younger fans amongst us and therefore some of the things I am about to write might be just words for those who have not followed the Kings for more than a decade. Anyway I can only ask for you to remember that we are all inflicted by the “recency biase” (more on this effect can be found at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_position_effect).
I decided I am not about to take the “Marketing” way and to tell you how amazing my team is (and it really is…
). I acknowledge it has some weaknesses too. So I will try and shed some light on both sides, while sharing with you my personal perspective.
Major Strengths
1.
Consistency. Throughout this draft I have tried to avoid selecting injury prone players or players who had one “fluke” season. I took this approach from my first pick onwards. If anyone remembers Otis Thorpe playing he knows what I am taking about. This guy averaged over 20/10 for a season. He played 82 games per season almost every season throughout his career. I believe he was one of the two best PF to ever wear a King's jersey (guess who was the second
). Kenny, Mike and Eddie are more from the same bread. Therefore when you look at the combined stats my team puts up – I think it holds water. And offensively they are SCARY. The 10 rotation guys I have combine for 121 points per game (!!!), shooting reasonably well from the field (.464, .334) as well as from the line (.776). They compliment that with a high number of assists (26.3 PG) and pick up 44.1 RPG. With Kenny “the jet” the tempo style does indeed account for 17.0 TO PG, but overall 1.55 ratio (AST/TO) is solid. And all of these guys are about to take the court at least 77 games per season.
2.
Decorated Winners. Two of my starting 5 were major pieces in an NBA championship team (Houston Rockets 93-94). And I am not talking ages after they left SacTown! I still believe that we drew the short straws with their trades. It might be argued that the droids are actually one center away from having a Championship team (see also weaknesses below). I know this C was Hakeem, one of the greatest C’s to ever play the game, but still…
3.
Versatility. This team was built to have a bit of everything. It ended up having quite a lot. On offense it is extremely flexible. It will run the court (Kenny), it will hurt you inside (Otis) and it will burn you from outside if you try and stop the duo. While many might be familiar with Nocioni's ability to shoot the 3's (0.441) and put scrappy D, I think less remember the shooting ability of Eddie Johnson. This guy was a pure G/F shooter! If you left him open he could score the lights out (you don't win the 6th man trophy for nothing, you know...) Then there is the bench. Special unit indeed. Mike Woodson could be a starting SG for most of the teams here. He was an excellent all around player and a true glue guy. Anthony Johnson is the neckless version of the same mold. Good court vision, excellent floor general. Last we have Lohaus and Conlon. The first could shoot and rebound. The last could contribute 6 fouls and some hustle. Their role is to simply grind the opposition bigs as much as possible. All that is coming off the bench to give the starters a breather.
4.
Hierarchy and chemistry. Every player has a defined role. Every player knows his objectives. Every player knows how many minutes he will get and what is expected of him. No big egos and locker room issues. If you think this is obvious take a look at last year's carousel in our starting lineup…
Major Weaknesses
1.
Center. This is a true problem for most of the teams I see. In fact one might argue that aside of one true dominant C (I suspected he will be picked higher…) this position was the Achilles’ heel in many Kings’ rosters. We never really had a dreadful big guy in the paint. Shaq/Howard kind of guy. Instead we kept picking long skinny guys with good court vision. Personally, I don’t want my C to be a passing specialist. I want him to eat the opposition alive. And I did not find one for my team in this draft (and at least in this game I will be facing teams that do not have one as well). Notwithstanding I can disclose that I am really happy with last year draft's results. I hope DMC might break the pattern we got used to…
2.
Blocking. This relates to the first weakness, and I really tried to cover this base somehow with a good PF who could block shots on D, but I came short and failed at drafting the right guy for the job. What can I say – I am not the perfect GM I thought I was…
3.
Nut heads. This is actually funny, but I would really like to have at least one nut head in my team. Not necessarily a head case, but someone truly unpredictable. I dreamt of getting J-Will, but was not surprised he was gone on the first. Pollard was another candidate, but missed on him too (to the same team, actually!). Well, we'll just have to settle winning this thing with nice guys…
4.
Coach. I think that from the coaches list that decorates our history I have only one coach whom I would like to employ. He was not available once the first round ended. By the time I picked a coach there was no one left. I ended having the “half-coach” theme… BTW - I like our current coach as well, but I need more time to pass a verdict in his case.
Epilogue
I think this team really exceeded my expectation. Maybe the fact that we tended to take players we are familiar with gave me a chance to take more pieces from a great Kings team from the late 80s. The last competitive team we had until the beginning of this millennium. I hope that many of the more experienced fans will agree with this. I hope my number one fan (VF 21) concurs as well. After all every team we build needs to ensure the fans can cheer for it. The
Droids for Clunkers are ready to take that challenge.
Last word: Thank you Bricklayer for setting this thing. It was a privilege to take part.
