All Time Kings Draft...on a Tropical Island?

The droid had to make this hard for me. Torn between women - again .

I guess this just HAS to come down to actual b-ball talent, doesn't it?

Well I had several things I could do here, but only one thing that I knew I HAD to do. So you guys can have your announcers, GMs, and mascots. I'm taking our ultimate fan:

Kings fan Marisa Miller, cuz our stands will be better looking than yours. :D

As an aside, I did a little light retouching of said photo from Sports Illustrated -- just in case any of you still do not know, that ain't a jersey. :p

We should probably all start thinking about how we are going to rank the teams, no? Brick, have you settled on the system yet? How many games we think each team would win?

Yes, although I was thinking of possibly rather than having us rank them, creating a thread for each team with a poll and opening the vote on games they would win to the public. Then taking those results and ranking them for the playoffs. Be a lot of threads created though.

Think we should also have maybe a 3-5 day period after the draft to make trades if anybody wants to. That turned out to be a dud, but see no reason not to open the door to it if anybody wants to now.

Yeah, too bad on the trades. I was this close to taking William Blake's offer, but after that I just sort of forgot about it.

I remember when you vetoed my request to use the above picture in the babes draft. Don't worry, I won't hold that grudge come voting time ... Especially with her on your roster.

Might want to spell Marisa's name right though ;)

Photoshop is your friend. :)

Quick little bit of airbrushing, and voila! You could've done it too. :p

I should note however that when Marisa attends my games she is going to be wearing the same outfit, SANS the photoshopping -- you can't photoshop life, and there is obviously something wrong with you if you wanted to. :p

Hall of Famer
Well, Brick may have one hot girl, but I think I have him, and EVERYONE else trumped.

With my pick, I choose...
Potentially intoxicated Sacramento Kings Dance Team!!!

What more can a team ask for?

Final pick:

John Wetzel (Assistant Coach)

Adelman's right hand man. I liked the Coachie pick and wanted to go in a direction that would help my team as well. Now I have 2 great coaches on my sideline.

Not coming from Sacramento, and not from the usa either, I know very few Kings related personalities, and you guys snatched them all from me (e.g. coachie), so here I'll play it simple and go for the hot chick.

Alright guys -- sorry, was really slammed there this week, but am back on the ball.

Unuless somebody has an objection, after I update the baord here, I am thinking of a two step playoff procedure.

1) have a "regular season" where every team gets its own thread and a "how many games would they win" poll. Obviously would have to space those out so as not to swamp the forum. But would give every team a little time in the sun and somewhat avoid the 8 weeks of drafting, out in 1 rnd with minimal consideration frustration

2) after those polls are done, average the results to get a regular season record, then do the playoff rankings accordingly

3) then do playoffs as normal

4) possible variations would be having two separate conferences (not sure how that would be determined, odds vs. evens?) or having only the teams with the better regular season records make the playoffs

In the interim, while we determine the procedure, if anybody has any trades they want to attempt, now would be the time. Let's say minimum hold the window open until Weds. noonish PT while we get everything organized.

Brick - just a heads up, I'm going to be in New York until next Monday with no internet access. Therefore, whatever happens in this next week, I will not be able to participate.

I like your first idea - about the each team having a thread/poll for wins.

Question though - what teams are we compairing for wins with?

Are we compairing each team based on the other drafted teams? or based on this years NBA season? or just a any average 82 game nba season?

I wouldn't mind upgrading my center position with the new Kings, but they've yet to play a game...

Do you guys think DMC will put up a rookie season to make him 1st round material for this type of draft next TDOS?

The Rock Lobsters

Roster:

PG: Danny Ainge/Darrick Martin/Will Solomon
SG: Mitch Richmond/Eddie House/Brooke Steppe
SF: John Salmons/Rod Higgins
PF: Shareef Abdur-Rahim/Jon Brockman
C: Jason Thompson/Bill Wennington

Coach: Eddie Jordan
Arena: Arco Arena 2002-2003

Armed with an imposing back court duo, deadly bench shooting, dependable front court rebounding and defense, and intimidating home court advantage, the Rock Lobsters are built to contend. Led by their do everything superstar, Mitch Richmond, the versatility of Danny Ainge and John Salmons, the front court tenacity of Jason Thompson and Jon Brockman, and the explosive scoring of Eddie House and Darrick Martin, the Rock Lobsters are truely contenders for the playoffs this season.

Offense: Eddie Jordan is the guru of the Princeton Offense, and he utilizes the constant ball and player movement to put his players in the best position to score, even against the leagues most intimidating defenses.
[yt=Princeton Offense]X9WZoTYdsQE[/yt]
Defense: The defense is anchored by physicality on the wings, excellent defensive rebounding, and length in the post to intimidate drives and prevent post scoring. John Salmons and Danny Ainge frequently get into the passing lanes to initiate the break, Jon Brockman, Jason Thompson, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, and Bill Wennington all throw their bodies around to intimidate in the post, block shots, and rebound extremely efficiently. When the speed of the game increases, Richmond, Ainge, and Salmons effectively deter opposing guards entrance to the lane, while Thompson, Wennington, and Brockman clean the glass.

Estimated Record: 52-30

Fear the Rock Lobsters!

Dear friends,
Let me say the following:
(1) Brick did a hell of a job getting this thing up and running.
(2) I really enjoyed taking part in this draft.
(3) Uolj already won this thing (or so it is proclaimed…)
So if you agree on two out of the three and/or if you wish to prove the third statement wrong – let’s all pull this thing through!
I am taking Jespher’s route and suggest each of us summarizes his team’s profile. I think we can all try and complete this stage within the next 10 days. Afterwards we will each vote for the projected record of every team (ourselves excluded) and then we might take this thing to a knockout playoff stage. I will allow Brick to lead it any way he finds appropriate. But I urge us all to take initiative and make sure we all deliver. Let’s have a ball…

Sac Town Homers, please put your hands together for your all time favorites; the mighty Droids for Clunkers:

PG Kenny Smith / Anthony Johnson
SG Eddie Johnson / Mike Woodson / Labradford Smith / Anthony Johnson
SF Andres Nocioni / Eddie Johnson / Mike Woodson / Labradford Smith
PF Otis Thorpe / Marty Conlon / Brad Lohaus
C Joe Kleine / Brad Lohaus / Marty Conlon

Preface
I am not sure how many years each of us has under his belt. I suspect I am not the oldest guy participating. But from the teams’ evolution I also fear that there are much younger fans amongst us and therefore some of the things I am about to write might be just words for those who have not followed the Kings for more than a decade. Anyway I can only ask for you to remember that we are all inflicted by the “recency biase” (more on this effect can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_position_effect).
I decided I am not about to take the “Marketing” way and to tell you how amazing my team is (and it really is…:p). I acknowledge it has some weaknesses too. So I will try and shed some light on both sides, while sharing with you my personal perspective.

Major Strengths
1. Consistency. Throughout this draft I have tried to avoid selecting injury prone players or players who had one “fluke” season. I took this approach from my first pick onwards. If anyone remembers Otis Thorpe playing he knows what I am taking about. This guy averaged over 20/10 for a season. He played 82 games per season almost every season throughout his career. I believe he was one of the two best PF to ever wear a King's jersey (guess who was the second ). Kenny, Mike and Eddie are more from the same bread. Therefore when you look at the combined stats my team puts up – I think it holds water. And offensively they are SCARY. The 10 rotation guys I have combine for 121 points per game (!!!), shooting reasonably well from the field (.464, .334) as well as from the line (.776). They compliment that with a high number of assists (26.3 PG) and pick up 44.1 RPG. With Kenny “the jet” the tempo style does indeed account for 17.0 TO PG, but overall 1.55 ratio (AST/TO) is solid. And all of these guys are about to take the court at least 77 games per season.
2. Decorated Winners. Two of my starting 5 were major pieces in an NBA championship team (Houston Rockets 93-94). And I am not talking ages after they left SacTown! I still believe that we drew the short straws with their trades. It might be argued that the droids are actually one center away from having a Championship team (see also weaknesses below). I know this C was Hakeem, one of the greatest C’s to ever play the game, but still…
3. Versatility. This team was built to have a bit of everything. It ended up having quite a lot. On offense it is extremely flexible. It will run the court (Kenny), it will hurt you inside (Otis) and it will burn you from outside if you try and stop the duo. While many might be familiar with Nocioni's ability to shoot the 3's (0.441) and put scrappy D, I think less remember the shooting ability of Eddie Johnson. This guy was a pure G/F shooter! If you left him open he could score the lights out (you don't win the 6th man trophy for nothing, you know...) Then there is the bench. Special unit indeed. Mike Woodson could be a starting SG for most of the teams here. He was an excellent all around player and a true glue guy. Anthony Johnson is the neckless version of the same mold. Good court vision, excellent floor general. Last we have Lohaus and Conlon. The first could shoot and rebound. The last could contribute 6 fouls and some hustle. Their role is to simply grind the opposition bigs as much as possible. All that is coming off the bench to give the starters a breather.
4. Hierarchy and chemistry. Every player has a defined role. Every player knows his objectives. Every player knows how many minutes he will get and what is expected of him. No big egos and locker room issues. If you think this is obvious take a look at last year's carousel in our starting lineup…

Major Weaknesses
1. Center. This is a true problem for most of the teams I see. In fact one might argue that aside of one true dominant C (I suspected he will be picked higher…) this position was the Achilles’ heel in many Kings’ rosters. We never really had a dreadful big guy in the paint. Shaq/Howard kind of guy. Instead we kept picking long skinny guys with good court vision. Personally, I don’t want my C to be a passing specialist. I want him to eat the opposition alive. And I did not find one for my team in this draft (and at least in this game I will be facing teams that do not have one as well). Notwithstanding I can disclose that I am really happy with last year draft's results. I hope DMC might break the pattern we got used to…
2. Blocking. This relates to the first weakness, and I really tried to cover this base somehow with a good PF who could block shots on D, but I came short and failed at drafting the right guy for the job. What can I say – I am not the perfect GM I thought I was…
3. Nut heads. This is actually funny, but I would really like to have at least one nut head in my team. Not necessarily a head case, but someone truly unpredictable. I dreamt of getting J-Will, but was not surprised he was gone on the first. Pollard was another candidate, but missed on him too (to the same team, actually!). Well, we'll just have to settle winning this thing with nice guys…
4. Coach. I think that from the coaches list that decorates our history I have only one coach whom I would like to employ. He was not available once the first round ended. By the time I picked a coach there was no one left. I ended having the “half-coach” theme… BTW - I like our current coach as well, but I need more time to pass a verdict in his case.

Epilogue
I think this team really exceeded my expectation. Maybe the fact that we tended to take players we are familiar with gave me a chance to take more pieces from a great Kings team from the late 80s. The last competitive team we had until the beginning of this millennium. I hope that many of the more experienced fans will agree with this. I hope my number one fan (VF 21) concurs as well. After all every team we build needs to ensure the fans can cheer for it. The Droids for Clunkers are ready to take that challenge.

Last word: Thank you Bricklayer for setting this thing. It was a privilege to take part.

Alright alright. I suppose time for summer vacation is over and its about time to start cranking this board back on up.

So...unfinished business here. Numerous excuses, but none that matter. All that does matter is that uolj does NOT get to win it. ;)

People should be trickling back to the board soon with training camp upcming, so I'll drop everybody a PM (yes I have cleared my box back out) and once everybody, or at least nearly everybody, has checked back in, try to restart this thing with a real and for true playoffs and everything.
