All Time Kings Draft...on a Tropical Island?

Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Alright peeps. Its come time. Last year we did the All Time NBA Draft. MJ vs. Wilt vs. Magic vs. Kobe etc. BORING!

Now comes the REAL test of your bball knowledge. And the only type of bball knowledge that really matters. Introducing the uberepic:

All Time Sacramento Kings Draft!!!

"But Mr. Bricklayer, I am ignorant pond scum and can't possibly remember who was on the team in 1989, or how many points Randy Beuer averaged in 1993-94!"

Pan down -- the work has been done for you (and if you don't think that was some work, I've had this window open for a solid week putting it together). Every player ever to suit up for the Kings, every player to ever play even 1 game as a King, has been listed, summarized, and had his career stats linked to. There are no excuses. This is your franchise. Let's get it on.

Da Rules
1) The draft will be serpentine and last 13 rounds -- enough to draft 12 players and 1 coach.
NOTE: only 1 coach may be drafted per team -- there are only 12 coaches in Sacto era history, and 12 participants. So no drafting multiple coaches just to leave somebody else without one.

2) Each participant will have 24 hours to make each pick, beginning from the moment that the player ahead of them picks.
Note: as a courtesy when you make your own pick, immediately send a PM to the person after you in the draft order. However receipt of such a PM is a courtesy only -- if you do not receive such a PM and take more than 24 hours to make a pick, you will be skipped over and have to make a makeup pick later.

3) All of the players' stats are linked up below. With each selection please indicate which of the player's seasons for the Kings you would like to draft. If a player was here from 91-92 until 96-97, then indicate which of those seasons you are taking. It would be greatly appreciated if you listed the stats that season as well -- otherwise I will have to go look them up. Note that players can still only be drafted once -- 3 people can't draft the same player and just taker different seasons. Note 2: gms played stats from the strike shortened '98-'99 season will be prorated out over 82 games. There were 50 gms that season, hence a player who played in 47 of the 50 games (94%) will be given credit for having played in the equivalent of 77 games (82 x.94) in anormal 82 game season.

4) In order to try to balance the advantage of having a high pick for a franchise that has only had a limited number of high level stars, BOTH the second and third round will begin with the player picking 12th. So Rnd 1 will be 1st to 12th; Rnd 2 12th to 1st, Rnd 3 12th to 1st, Rnd 4 1st to 12th etc. in normal serpentine fashion thereafter. Its a minor correction, but one that should allow late drafters to try to counter star power wiht overall quality -- i.e. the person with the first pick will draft the 1st, 24th, and 36th players. The person with the 12th pick would get the 12th, 13th and 25th players.

5) Trading WILL be allowed, either before OR after a pick is made. Thus draft picks may be traded ahead of actual drafting, or players may be traded after they are drafted.
TRADING RULES:
a) after pondering the potential chaos caused by unbalanced multi-player trades (2 for 1s, 3 for 1s etc.), all trades must involve an equal number of players and picks on each side. In other words, if you trade somebody two players, you must take back some combination of 2 players or picks. Presumably 12th/13th round picks can be used as fodder to fill in during two for one type deals. i.e. you may trade 2 players for 2 players, 2 picks, or 1 player and 1 pick, but may not trade 2 players for 1 player alone, or 1 pick alone, or 3 players etc.
b) If both participants have a coach, then they may be swapped as part of a deal. If only one participant has a coach, he can be traded as normal.
c) No player may ever have more than 13 picks, 12 players, or 1 coach. If you have accumulated 12 players, then you can't take anymore and your last pick must go to a coach. And vice versa.
d) trading will be allowed for some period after the draft is over as well

6) when the draft is completed, any player may freely exchange any of their drafted players for any undrafted free agent. I'm thinking first come first seved there -- just whenever it is posted.

7) each participant will be responsible for $100 in remuneration to Bricklayer for his work in this thread.

8) we'll figure oout the exact post draft mechanics of the playoffs later. Likely I will ask in PM for everybody to send in how many games they think each team could win agiainst a real NBA schedule, average out th result, and use that to rank the playoffs. But we'll see.

Come on, its the history of your Kings. Come have fun wallowing in the fugly.

Centers
Peter Aluma C -- don't remember him
Calvin Booth C -- Boothman! Long former shotblocking specialist with no other skills at end of his career.
Randy Breuer C -- Lurch in sneakers. Gigantic, uncoordinated. Once had a little offensive game. No longer.
Duane Causwell C -- shotblocking specialist lost rebounds chasing blocks. Bad hands. Dumb.
Vlade Divac C -- saavy flopmaster. Amazing passing big man. Skills greater than numbers. Leader.
Pervis Ellison F/C -- Injury prone and undersized shotblocker with some skills. Mobile. Never given a chance.
Ben Gillery C -- quite possibly the most untalented scrub in Kings history, which is saying something.
Spencer Hawes C -- skilled but soft, many moves inside, and can shoot with range, lacks physicality, inconsistent
Jerome James C -- Trash bag man before he got wider than tall. Huge, barely skilled, shotblocker.
Les Jepsen C -- uncoordinated scrub
Rich Kelley C -- old reserve center in his final year. Some skills, but as athletic as your accountant.
Greg Kite F/C -- complete hack with no discernible skills. Dirty as they came. Would hustle.
Joe Kleine C -- lumbering giant, immensely strong, but too slow to use it. Offense was a little facing jumper.
Eric Leckner C -- all Dick Motta could talk about was his big hands. Did nothing with them.
Brad Miller C -- highly skilled but lazy center. No post game. Good jumper/passing. Bad defense.
Oliver Miller C -- Fat. Ate himself out of NBA. Long arms = could block a shot. More skilled than body suggested.
Matin Nessley C -- can't comment
Jawann Oldham C -- athletic shotblocker, twitchy personality
Greg Ostertag C -- huge shotblocker with a gut. Lousy athlete. Nice guy but did not take bball seriously.
Scot Pollard F/C -- defensive F/C roleplayer. Banger. Few offensive skills. Fun but wacky personality.
Olden Polynice C -- strong rebounder. Double double guy. Offense was a jumphook. Cancerous personality.
Vitaly Potapenko F/C -- physical force, but no other skills. At the end of his career.
Ralph Sampson C -- 7'4" stringbean, former All Star, ruined knees kept him out of action.
Dwayne Schintzius C -- huge mulletted creature moved well for the bulk. Immature.
Michael Stewart F/C -- ridiculously undersized shotblocker with hops. No other skills. Hometown hero.
Greg Stokes F/C -- don't remember him well enough to comment.
Lasalle Thompson C -- Tank, huge shoulders, very strong rebounder, short for a center, mediocre offense.
Bill Wennington C -- soft and scrawny but mobile. Jumpshooting center. Carried MJ to 3 rings.

Mitch Richmond SG -- tough and powerful SG, big scorer with easy 3pt range, strong defender, Allstar not superstar
Ryan Robertson SG -- played one very exciting game for us in 2000
Chris Robinson G -- I think a low level one dimensional 3pt shooter
John Salmons G/F -- talented but moody swingman, strong off the dribble game, added 3pt range, good man D, selfish
Derek Smith G/F -- former high scoring postup guard with a ruined knee, constantly injured
LaBradford Smith SG -- small streaky offensive player who often sucked but could explode, think he played some D
Brook Steppe SG -- remember the name, not the game. Think he played a little at both Gs. No 3pt range.
Carl Thomas SG -- played 1 game for us in 91-92. It was a thrilla.
Stephen Thompson G/F -- don't remember anything about him
Henry Turner G/F -- prolific garbagetime superstar, great athlete, no shot, I don't think much D
Bonzi Wells G/F -- extremely powerful postup SG, a PF in SGs body, big rebounder, shaky shot, turnover prone
Randy Wittman SG -- limited midrange jumpshooter, lost his efficiency here, defense sucked, could pass a little
Mike Woodson SG -- one dimensional shooting guard, pretty good midrange scorer, no 3pt range

Point Guards
Michael Adams PG -- tiny 3pt bombing PG, did nothing for us as rookie, one day would score 26ppg in wacky system
Mike Bibby PG -- clutch shooting PG, pick and roll specialist, saavy, defensively challenged
Mike Bratz PG -- aging backup PG, imagine your accountant in sneakers
Bobby Brown G -- quick gunner of a PG, defensively challenged, mostly about his shots
Randy Brown G -- defensive specialist tweener guard, shaky shot w/ limited range, injury prone, would earn rings w/ MJ
Mateen Cleaves PG -- one of history's great towel wavers, oncourt lacked range and turnover prone
Steve Colter PG -- streaky skinny backup PG near the end, no 3pt range
Tony Delk G -- tweener guard, brought defense and could hit midrange pops
Bruce Douglas PG -- one of the most talented guys named Bruce Douglas ever to play in the NBA
Larry Drew PG -- small but quick former 20pt scorer, used quickness to set people up, limited range
Jerry Eaves G -- his 3 games for the Kings in 86-87 are still the stuff of legend
Tyus Edney PG -- tiny 2nd round pick forced to start, used speed to set people up, shaky scoring, hopeless defense
Franklin Edwards PG -- smallish backup PG with injury issues. decent floor general, but no range on shot.
Tyreke Evans G -- big powerful scoring PG who can play some SG, great to the basket game, shaky jumper, good D
Orien Greene G -- defensive oriented PG with no offensive ability or ability to create for others
Jason Hart PG -- defensive specialist, not terribly creative, could not shoot, developed attitude problem
Michael Hawkins PG -- barely remember him
Eddie House G -- shoot first, second and third tweener guard, dangerous when hot, quick trigger from distance
Bobby Hurley PG -- small and scrawny collegiate champion, could set people up, own offense and defense hopeless
Bobby Jackson G -- tough feisty 6th man type, very strong and could play some SG at 6'1", gunner not passer
Michael Jackson PG -- the King of Pop, watch him around the kids. Or the prescription meds. Or the pyrotechnics.
Anthony Johnson PG -- squat strong PG with no neck, played defense, struggled scoring, but streaky
Damon Jones PG -- uncreative PG who mostly liked to spot up from three
Stan Kimbrough PG -- another 3 game splayer, this guy in 92-93
Jim Les PG -- and this guy WAS an accountant, limited little 3pt bomber, lacked other weapons, willing passer, bad D
Darrick Martin PG -- inefficient shotaholic PG with an inflated opinion of himself, dangerous when hot, bad defense
Kevin Ollie PG -- ultimate journeyman, no offense, steady, uncreative but willing passer, barely passed through town
Ronnie Price G -- athletic tweener guard, energetic and willing defender, erratic offense, lacked PG instincts
Sergio Rodriguez PG -- inventive passer, tended to play out of control, D a question mark
Kenny Smith PG -- scrawny high scoring PG, ok creativity, only an ok shooter at that stage, poor defender
Will Solomon PG -- refugee form overseas, lacked creativity, mostly just a three point shooter
Rory Sparrow PG -- old unathletic and mediocre at everything, except D, where he was poor, uncreative passer
Garret Temple PG -- tall but scrawny cup of coffee PG with limited offensive skills, calling card was defense
Reggie Theus G -- big smooth scoring combo guard, notoriously selfish and yet once averaged 9+ ast, no D effort
Sedric Toney PG -- offensively challenged backup PG
Beno Udrih PG -- good offensive PG, good shooter and effective spins into the paint, not terribly creative passer, weak D
Spud Webb PG -- diminutive PG with freakish hops, okay shooter, decent creater, way too small to D up
Jason Williams PG -- wild child with elite vision and passing skills, undisciplined, poor defense, took bad shots
Othell Wilson PG -- decent passer but few other skills
Leon Wood PG -- okay backup PG that struggled with the shot, end of his career, poor defender, better ref than player

Coaches
Phil Johnson -- Sacto's 1st coach, and got that team to a first round exit. Fired next year after a debacle in L.A..
Jerry Reynolds -- repeat interim coach always there to fill in, then a fill in GM, now plays Chuckles the Hick on TV.
Bill Russel -- HOF player who came to town in a cynical money grab. Had no interest in coaching or working.
Dick Motta -- decrepit old coach with over 900 career wins...and 1000 losses. Well thought of before Sacto.
Rex Hughes -- Motta's assistant, took over as interim, had a temper

Gary St. Jean -- here for 5 years and never had a winning record, did make the playoffs once though.
Eddie Jordan -- took over as interim, was back the next year and lost the team during a rebuilding year.
Rick Adelman -- have heard he can't coach D, won't develop players etc. Has funny knack for winning though.
Eric Musselman -- master of powerpoint strategy, so great that COY Scott Brooks was a mere groveling assistant.
Reggie Theus -- before tripping over his ego and wearing thin, got modest results out of misfit crew.
Kenny Natt -- so renowned databasebasketball thought his work spoke for itself and did not bother opening a page
Paul Westphal -- held young team together and made them believe, and made 25 wins feel like progress

Ehh, why not. Question, though, are all draft picks to be seen as they were when they were with the Kings? Meaning, if we were doing a Utah Jazz draft and I selected Mo Williams, would the player he turned into with the Bucks bear any clout as far as the worth of the pick? (Obviously, it is up to the voter to decide, but I'd like to know).

No -- that was why I wanted to add the "choose a year with the Kings" provision. Helps make that clearer. If you choose Gerald Wallace's 4.7pt 02-03 campaign with the Kings, helps separate him from today's 18 and 8 guy.

Suppose you could have an entirely different sort of draft -- all time draft of guys who wore Kings unis at any point in their career, but this is for Kings, while they were Kings.

I'd like to play.

And I think trades are a good idea. Perhaps there should be a trade deadline that lands a few days after the draft, and then the supplemental draft can be run if necessary to fill out rosters.

Da**! I want to play but I'm stretched far too thin with the heroes, villians, and mock lottery.

Hmmmm..... If it starts to look like I am needed to fill a spot, I will join.

Dang. This is painful. It’s like rubbing salt into one’s wounds… I can actually draft a team that will shoot for a perfect season (if 0-82 can be referred to as “perfect”). Can this challenge include Royal's players or is this restricted to Sac era? BTW – if you count Rex Hughes I think we had 13 coaches…But is anybody really interested in drafting Rex Hughes as their coach???

Holy oh my goodness.
If there is room I am in.

I built the best TEAM EVAR last year, now I must build the best Kings team ever.

Alrighty folks -- we've got room for exactly one more in this thing and then its a go. One more glutton eager to choose between Kevin Salvadori and Erik Daniels for that coveted 6th man spot.

Any more Kings scholars out there?
