or DDV was going to pick up the qualifying offer and the Kings decided they might as well cut bait this year versus having a player taking up dollars and roster spots for nothing.

so why not use 37 for Hardy who plays the same position?

Punting 37, or even not packaging both together to move into the early 30’s is by far my biggest criticism of this offseason…so far, but hopefully my only one haha. I wanted Lyles back and I would hope the Kings are looking for more talented SGs then DDV, if not, cheaper ones to not hinder us getting one in the future.

Or perhaps since he built his reputation on Tim Duncan's consistent production he wants to leave the team with another generational big man prospect to build around. I don't think the Tony Parker connection gives them any kind of advantage in landing the #1 pick, but he might have been a factor in convincing Coach Pop that Wenbanyama is good enough to tank for.

Just Two?

1) let Bogi walk for nothing
2) Lost Haliburton because he didn’t fix the roster balance soon enough
3) Was played by the league on the Lakers trade
4) traded for Thompson
4) wasted and traded 2nd round picks

reasonably good chance Barnes walks for nothing at the end of this year.

Monte has had more than two asset management failures.

I'm thinking Pop realizes the end is near and wants to set up his successor with a clean slate and a cupboard full of draft picks and goodies to take them into the next generation. He seems like the kind of guy that now thinks about not only his legacy but the broader spurs well being as he rides off into the sunset.

I hope I'm wrong but in these situations we usually get disappointed.

i.e. Let DDV go for nothing....think that means a trade is brewing where we'll get an upgraded 2 guard......end up signing some 10 year guy who averages 12 ppg on 42/33/74 shooting lines.

Haha I’m trying to keep the positive energy going but this has me laughing, and I laugh to keep from crying. The shooting lines had me cause it’s hella true haha.

And it's not even that great of a list:

1) Sure, questionable asset management
2) Traded out of a logjam to get a young former All-Star who fits a need. Reasonable asset management.
3) A team pulling out of trade talks is not Monte's fault, nor is it asset management in any way. What do you want, Monte to not have trade talks with anybody?
4) Traded a backup for a backup. Meh. Future moves meant that it wasn't ideal from a position standpoint. Still, meh.
4) I counted #37. Trading #49 for draft rights to a potential player is not questionable asset management. His other picks he has made selections, so that may be scouting, but it's not asset management (also, gotta love the expectation that if the Kings don't go 3-for-3 nailing All-Stars in the second round, that they suck at drafting.)

Barnes...you're assuming future questionable asset management that hasn't happened yet. Wow.

Anyone who took this GM job was going to be under the microscope. If for no other reason, the franchise doesn't have a lot of room to recover from mistakes and everyone knows it. And there have been some glaring mistakes that shows a pattern in my eyes.

Monte will get my approval when he produces wins. Until then, I'll continue to be critical of his errors in the moment. He hasn't yet earned my benefit of the doubt.

DDV is an above average Kings player. The roster is cluttered with guys like Jones, Metu, Harkless, Len and Holiday. DDV is much more valuable and younger than all these guys. It's a no brainer type move to extend the offer. DDV helps you win this year and still has room for growth. It's not like he is going to command over $10mil a year. Look at the deal Bagley is getting. DDV is going to be a steal compared to that and the dude is only 25 and coming off a bad injury. Lots of room to improve.

The only big money that will get thrown around will be directed at players currently on our roster. I can't even remember the last time the Kings signed a big name free agent to a big contract. Has it ever even happened? That's the reason why cap space is less valuable for us than it is for big market teams. We can't use our cap space effectively because no one wants to come here anyway. If you have the ability to lock these guys in, you do it because they don't come here willingly. This franchise acquires good players through the draft and trades, not free agency.

All my crying could be for nothing if Monte has a trade brewing that justifies this but I'll believe it when I see it.

You're aware that Donte is a 4 year guy who averages 9 ppg on 42/35/76 shooting lines right? There's hope that maybe there's more upside there since he's only 25 but it also sounds like he's one 5 year contract away from being the same player you're expressly hoping we don't sign to replace him.

I get your point but we all know that a players worth goes far beyond those 3 shooting percentages.
 
do the DDV proponents in this thread actually see him getting a deal somewhere else in the 7mil per season range though?


is it absurd to think he will not find that type of deal on the open market n could come back to the Kings for the bi-annual mle?
 
Trading for a guy twice then (likely) letting him walk is strange. It could be that he simply asked not to be here. But curious what the plan is.

I hear you, and you have solid points. The big thing for me in your response is your very first sentence. DDV is an above average KINGS player. With all due respect to the players on our team, I don’t want Kings level talent, I want competitive team’s level talent. Keeping Kings level talent around with the mind to have them start in my mind now a days does one of two things, wastes a roster spot and financials or blocks a younger player from developing and seeing minutes that needed to promote growth. If we’re going to lose, or not be competitive come end of season anyways, why have either of those things I listed happen?
