So the Nets strat would be to become a geriatric version of OKC in the 2010s. Pure genius. I bet Sean Marks has a phone in each ear trying to get that one done.
Might be worse. They already lost Harden, and are likely to soon lose Durant. They will be left with the old version of only Russ of the Big-3.
Point is not what Nets want or their strategy. It's that stars (and their agents) get their way more often than not. In recent times, Sixers did the most I can think of in terms of penalizing a player. Yet, they too had little option but to trade away Simmons and added compensation for a right to overpay Harden. Durant carried his injury to a huge pay-day with the Nets, and after little to show for the mammoth contract and trust the Nets put in him, might walk away to chase another ring. Teams have very little leverage if a star player wants out. Their can be fake injuries, lacklustre play, and poisonous locker room. If the star vetoes some teams, they don't make offers even when they might be able to give more, since they don't want to import an uninterested star and the problems, while gutting their roster. So, this is no slight to Nets or their exec team. They had created an excellent roster, which, but for COVID, could have gone all the way.
