Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

IMDB seems to have its movie ratings wonked to hell. The home version is unrated and is probably the NC17 cut, it features a whopping 18 seconds of extra footage, which is mostly Christian Bale's naked buttocks. I was going to settle for the R myself... now I demand it. No naked Bale buttocks for you G3.

BTW, like with Grindhouse the little picture rating at the top says one thing but if you scroll down to the film info below it clearly states it was a US R, if you click the "see all certifications" link it then shows all ratings it got. You can also go to http://movie-censorship.com/ to get a full explanation of many movies different versions. This site is most definitely NSFW as a whole, nor is the entry for American Psycho which shows a few still frames from the censored scenes.
I've seen both versions and there certainly isn't a big enough difference that I'm going to freak out one way or the other.

Will say, however, that this pick was one of the ones I was thinking of the other day when I first raised my concerns about the no NC-17 ruling. Not because I have any particular attachment to my precious extra seconds of Bale ***, mind you, but just because it seems to throw in a bit of unnecessary confusion on a pick that I'm pretty sure we can all agree a) isn't porn, and b) should be allowed. Based on my own tastes and direction I've gone so far (as well as the route pdx seems to be taking), I'd be surprised if this didn't remain a sticky wicket throughout the draft.

My fourth selection:

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

I could watch this movie a million times and still laugh... it is Jim Carey at his best doing what he does best: act like an idiot and do physical comedy. Just a fantastic comedy and road movie. Everyone I know has a favorite scene in the movie, maybe the scene with the lighter or the snowball fight or the tongue on the frozen pole or the blind kid with the dead parakeet... and they are all hilarious.

I see your point here. I will try to review these picks on a case by case basis, and allow/deny accordingly. As for the Dumb and dumber choice, I approve :). Funny, funny film!

This next pick is one that I reckon I could take a lot later than I am, but the run on all things Tarantino has scurred me, so...

True Romance (1993) -- As with my second pick, I feel it necessary to point out at the start that this is far from a perfect film. In fact, there are a number of things that drive me absolutely batty (see: director Tony Scott, who manages to turn what should be a funny third act into a bad episode of "Miami Vice" due entirely to not getting the tone of the script). Tarantino's writing, however, from before anyone had a clue who he was -- possibly still a clerk in a video store at the time -- is spot on, despite Scott doing everything he can behind the lens to suck the fun right out of it. Dennis Hopper's monologue is a thing of beauty. Christopher Walken's one scene is genius. And I would be hard pressed to name a recent performance funnier, and more quotable, than Brad Pitt's turn as a stoner roommate, despite his VERY limited screen time. I've owned this movie, in various formats, for nearly twenty years and I still find the cast list staggering. Everyone is in this thing. And pretty much everyone is good. Even Balki is genuinely entertaining.

Not the direction I was going in this draft but would have been in an alternate one possibly. Great but flawed movie, I think there is a small but decent chance that had Tarantino made this himself it could have been my favorite QT film of this period.

I have consistently referred to this as Brad Pitt's best role ever. I even had a friend back in the good old undergrad days who named her cat "Floyd" after the role.

Or the Seabass scene, or the one with the hot peppers, or in the limo, or when they arrive in Aspen, when they arrive to the banquet, or the old woman on the motorized cart, or the gun shooting scene, or the bus.....................

Dumb and Dumber has grown on me over the years but at the time it was the last stop on the Jim Carey express for me.

Just turned on the TV and Dumb and Dumber is on.

It's a sign.
IMO its a sign you should turn your TV off. ;)

I'm sorry, I just recently finally saw that one after 15 years of intentionally avoiding it and...well, I am not about panning other people's picks in this draft, so I'll stop now. :p

I never elaborated on what the sign was ;)

D and D is watchable for what it is, a goofy and warm old comedy. It wasn't on my list, but I can see why someone would take it.

That one remains a real mystery to me. I was around in the 80's too, and the Goonies was conisdered a bad joke amongst my particular set. Then I wake up 20 yrs later and people are lauding it as a childhood classic. Very strange for me. I literally had no idea of its cult status until a movies related thread on this very board a couple of years ago.

My island is overrun with aliens, cannibals and flying tomahawks. I need me some laughs, stat:

A Fish Called Wanda (1988) R

The great Ameri-Python comedy that holds up beautifully after two decades.. I recently rewatched this and was impressed by it really having lost none of its pop at all. That's almost unheard of with comedies. If it came out today, I am not sure there is a joke that wouldn't work just as well. Impressed by that, and by the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis was really smoking hot back at that time.

I don't understand how that is since from what I gather we are roughly the same age and from the same part of town. I thought everyone loved the Goonies. When it became this big cult thing it was a head scratcher to me, but I do remember it fondly. It was shot in Astoria which isn't too far from Portland but I've never made the trek. There was a huge 25th anniversary event though.

Zombieland - 2009

Here's another recent comedy that took me off guard. I'm not a fan of the zombie genre or even parodies of it and otherwise ignored this one when it came out. But when I finally gave it a chance, I throughlly enjoyed the creative take on survivng the fabled Zombie Apocalypse - and it all hinges on wearing seatbelts, avoiding bathrooms and of course, cardio.

Also, Bill Murray's cameo is priceless

OK, another comedy that would probably be gone before long.

With my next pick I choose Casablanca (1942).

If I didn't pick this film, I'd regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of this draft.

Below: trailer (as if you haven't seen the movie...)

Great pick. I was thinking about picking that one if it was still there in the later rounds. The first time i saw it i thought it was really overrated but the second time i thought it was awesome. That happens sometimes.

Casablanca would have been very high on my list if I wasn't self limiting selections to films not yet taken in the original draft. Excellent pick Capt. :).

Back to the Future (1985)

It's time for my childhood favourite too. It's probably not as good as the Indiana Jones or the Star Wars trilogies, but I clearly remember watching it more times than those other two. Maybe because Marty McFly wasn't a Jedi or an handsome archaeologist but just a regular kid from the suburbs just like you and me.

I'll be brief because Daddy Day Care is in full swing. More to say later.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Action packed to the gills, and then some.

GREAT pick. Was one I was considering picking again after my last draft. Wanted to see if it would fall to me again though.

I think I saw Empire 5 times in the theater during its opening run, so I doubt I've seen BttF more, but it is definitely right up there. I saw it at least 3 times in the theater (twice at sneaks) and have watched it countless times since. I just picked up the blu-rays recently so I'm sure I'll be watching it again soon.

While I was a bit bummed to miss Dawn of the Dead, it was the other sequel to Night of the Living Dead that I can not live without so I may be reaching but at this point I don't think I have any essentials in jeopardy.

Return of the Living Dead - 1985
A true killer horror-comedy classic that also sports a great punk/deathrock soundtrack featuring The Cramps, TSOL, The Damned and the anthemic 45 Grave "Partytime". It's also got scream queens Linnea Quigley and Jewel Sheppard, the former sporting little more than leg warmers for much of the film. Written and directed by the late, great Dan O'Bannon loosely based from Night of the Living Dead co-creator John A. Russo's original story. This film is definitely one of my favorites from my youth and one I revisit regularly, though only recently did I finally get around to purchasing my own copy on Blu-Ray.

It's a zombie movie featuring a bunch of punk kids... what else can I say?

I'm going with Rear Window. I'm a big fan of Jimmy Stewart and Alfred Hitchcock and this may be both their best work. Even though the plot is pretty simple and it takes place almost entirely in one room, something about this film pulls me in every time. Grace Kelly is stunning in it, too.

Good movie. I thought about that one but I saw it so many times in the 90s that i eventually burned out on it a little. Still one of the best action films ever, though.
