Time for a bit more comedy on my island. I have some superhero action, holiday romance, epic sci-fi awesomeness, and now for a touch of classic 80s comedy, with some sports thrown in to boot. Hard to imagine how this film slipped through the entire draft last time around. With my 4th pick I select:

The Godfather: Part II

A classic of the gangster genre (and in general), and widely considered the best of the Godfather trilogy. Thought it would be long gone so it's a value pick.

Me neither. I think there was an article on Haysbert recently that mentioned this and picture palm striking forehead sharply. I guess that's called "acting."

Still two of my all-time rewatchable favorites haven't been mentioned. I think it IS a generational thing and PurpleHaze might know what I am thinking of.

I remember The Warriors. Cheesy, but oddly affecting.

Now I'm not sure what I am supposed to do with Dime's next pick. Originally he gave me both his next picks (the Godfather PT II and this one), and said if he had not been abel to check in by 6ish boardtime this morning, I should go ahead and put his up for him. Well, he did check in. Then Larry did his thing..and now its back to Dime but long past his original deadline. Am I supposed to wait again? Dunno.

So I'm going to take a guess here -- Dime said he's going to be bust today and tommorow, so I am going to go ahead and announce the second one he gave me since its still available, and then he can hopefully check in and clean it up:

Warriors... really?

had it way down my list and was sure I'd get it late. grrrrr. There is another teenage gang movie I like way better but Warriors fits in more with the rest of my movies.

I could go a number of directions here, but I'm going to stick with an 80s comedy. This film is such an original delight with its slapstick comedy, political satire, beautiful shots of the African wilderness, and insightful commentary on modern society. Plus it could give me some helpful pointers living alone/semi-alone on a tropical island and having to fend for myself :). With my 5th pick I select:

Thanks Bricky. You did the right thing not holding up the draft. That was my objective, although I probably didn't outline it in my PM. Thanks. Common sense always prevails.


Have to say I am majorly surprised by the respective tastes in films by posters. I hated Warriors when I watched it, and I won't go any further in displaying my dislikeness (for lack of an actual word, or overly harsh word). Not my job to complain about picks, so it's fair enough :) Just not to my taste! :)


PS. I didn't think Ocean's 11 was impressive in an artistic or story-telling manner. However, nor did I think it was a poor film. I just thought it was an interesting flick to entertain once and nothing more. Want to make it clear that I don't think these are poor picks; just not to my particular taste. There's been far worse picks so far IMO, so I don't want to come across as trying to sabotage or influence. I'm sure many of my films are utterly boring to some.

Another short point, Supes is far ahead on my personal board. So I don't want it to sound like I'm rubbishing his pick. It seems I have very similar taste in movies so far. Second best taste in the draft (after guess who?).

Fight Club

Surprised this was still available. Basic storyline, two very good performances from Ed Norton (who I'm on a particular binge of) and Brad Pitt, who is sometimes very over rated but often excellent. The dialogue is humourous, the plot a little nutty, and the character development a little crazy, all which combine to make this very rewatchable. Happy to have this one this late.

With this pick I'm drafting, Unforgiven. I've seen it enough times to know it holds up and it also stars three of my favorite actors, Gene Hackman, Clint Eastwood, and Morgan Freeman. Just a great all around film.

All the sudden some picks I thought might be safe weren't or aren't likely to be and I may have to diversify more than others. Here is one that I don't think is in danger, but I want an 80s teen comedy that is a little off beat and worthy of cult status and this I think is the best of the lot.

Better Off Dead - 1985
A true 80s classic with tons of memorable characters and performances written and directed by the oft-overlooked and under appreciated Savage Steve Holland. I'm sure there is at least one of you out there that thought this was another John Hughes flick.

Way too many classic jokes and one liners like the mountain full of snow, the "French" meal (topped off with "And to drink.... Peru!"), "the international language" and of course the immortal cry of "I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!!!!". Throw in another dozen or so quirky characters like the Howard Cosel car racers, Taylor Negron's mailman, the crazy brother building the spaceship and Ricky and his mother and you've got a movie that will keep you laughing for weeks.

And of course there's the Van Halen singing hamburger. Who needs CGI, right?
