what was the last movie you watched?

Twilight.

Weirdest thing was how bad it looked, though. I'll admit to not knowing the financial specifics, but I'm guessing the budget was big enough to not make the crappy special effects a necessity.
Haven't seen it, but apparently, from a review I read, it was actually quite low budget. Reviewer said it showed up in the special effects.

So Ordinary That It's Truly Quite Extraordinary

Twilight was shot quite a bit around my hood. I got an email about showing up to be an extra the same week I started my job. Apparently the building in the final climactic scene was just damaged in a fire here. I've heard that some places were actually getting tourist visits. I'm curious about this movie but to me it looked a) bad and b) like a teeny-bopper movie so I've held out. It takes a lot to get me into a theater these days with all my home viewing options, and that was before the little one showed up.

Continuing my Netflix documentary stream fest, I watched Bigger Stronger Faster* the other night. This is a doc about steroid use, quite interesting. I'm sure some people would write it off as being "pro steroid" but that wasn't really what I walked away with so much as that the "debate" about steroids in America is intellectually dishonest. I thought the filmmaker raised some valid points.

Good movie weekend given the snow up here. Watched Prince Caspian for the first time, and rewatched the Dark Knight and Fools Gold. Liked the second two more than Caspian, but it was decent too.

Get Smart -- surprisingly thumbs up. Had fairly low expectations, but it was actually pretty funny. Not edgy or anything of course, and not a laugh a minute, but just solid middle of the road mid to low brow funny. Was a nice little piece of popcorn.

i just don't see it, i've always thought that she has been overrated. to each their own. :)
the girls who fall into the "smoking hot" category are the ones that can be overrated. anne is merely a pretty girl, and seems like an actual normal person as opposed to a movie star, which is part of her appeal to me.

and to be clear, we are talking post-princess diaries anne hathaway. :p

I added this one to my Blockbuster queue, but I'm skeptical. As a fan of the TV show, I'm preparing myself for a let down.

I suspect fans of the TV show will probably be the ones most likely to be disappointed, because its never going to be quite the same. And this movie largely riffs off of the old show and has fun on its own terms rather than just aping it.

Saw "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" yesterday. It's 167 minutes long. There's kind of a slow part about an hour in, but after that it picks up. I liked it even thoug I'm not really a Brad Pitt fan.
Interesting storyline. I think it was based on a story by F. Scott Ftzgerald.

"The Day the Earth Stood Still"

In a rare ocurrance, I think my dad enjoyed it more than I. He had the nostalgia thing going as he likes the original version - I have not seen the original, but this one had some holes and the kid playing the stepson was just plain annoying to me. Not bad though.

Also saw part of "Mamma Mia" and really think the musical was much better than the movie. Who the heck thought Brosnan could sing??? Casting should have been fired for that decision.....

Has anyone seen The Wrestler?

Ive read it's actually really good.
Im still skeptical though, even though Im an embarrassingly large wrestling fan.

Went and saw The Spirit this afternoon. In terms of subject matter, style, technique, and Frank Miller connection, it's clearly trying to follow in Sin City's footsteps, and it doesn't live up. At all. But if you prepare for a high cheese factor, and can live with a few moments that are just plain bad, there's enough good here to make it enjoyable.

Man, you do that to me all the time....LOL. I was surprised that I like Enchanted. Seeing a movie starting out with animation and then going to live action, I thought it would be kind of corny, but watching the movie turned out to be very enjoyable.

Wall-e was a good animated movie. Romeo must die was a good action pack movie. Any movie with Jet Li is a good movie in my books.

Well, if you are going to bother to post the movie names, at least say "good" or "bad". ;)

Finally got around to watching The Dark Knight. It was good even though I'm not a fan of Batman. I didn't see anything amazing about it like everyone talks about, but I was entertained.

I liked it because the bad guys were bad and not just stupid cartoons. Yes, they tried to put too much into a movie (again) and it was a bit too long. Yes, the Joker was a bit too prescient being able to set up all these ongoing traps on the fly. And other things, as well. But, darn it, Heath was a million times better than the Nicholson Joker....

So, I went this weekend to see The Day the Earth Stood Still, finally. It wasn't worth my $11 bucks (plus my wife, plus nachos). It started out okay, if a bit slow, and because I already knew what was going to happen, it wasn't quite as unbearable as it might be if you're wondering what's going on. Anyways, as the ending starting to show itself, it became apparent that the plan was to make the movie unpredictable, and it consequently lost grip of any semblance of reality.

A couple of weeks ago, we went to see Seven Pounds. I wasn't impressed. The acting as always was top notch (Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Michael Ealy), but the movie tried to be too heavy. It was trying to make you feel a certain way, and it failed at that. It also tried to keep you in the dark, even though it was pretty obvious what was going on, and it caused the plot to be even more convoluted. And unnecessarily so.

The Day the Earth Stood Still: C (Wait for video.)

Seven Pounds: C- (Wait for video.)

Went and saw Bedtime Stories. I'm not a fan of Adam Sandler, but the movie was good. Very much a "light popcorn" flick, good family movie night. Don't think it would lose anything to wait for video to come out.

As usual playing catchup:

Superbad -- thumbs mostly up, better than I feared after the disastrously overrated Knocked Up (I had avoided it for fear of the same overrating). The two main characters actually weren't terribly funny, and again fell into that cussing is funny because we're cussing, haha, trap. But the McLovin saga was funny, and again I liked Rogen a lot better as a minor character than a lead.

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull -- eh...not as bad as some reports, but still pretty stupid and you could just hear the gears creaking in the background as they strained to top the spectacle of the earlier ones. Result was messy. Still, had its moments. Shia swinging through the trees via vine with a pack of monkeys was not one of them.

Hancock --slightly more thumbs up than "eh", not actually that consistently funny -- one of those movies where the trailers were a lot funnier than the movie. Timing and writing was just slightly off. Worked better as a superhero drama after a midmovie changeup.

The Bucket List -- thumbs up. Not terribly realistic of course, but that wasn't the point, and Freeman and Nicholson were great together.

I saw Hancock on a plane. It was ok I guess. Not that really exciting. Seems like a good movie for little kids.
Resevoir Dogs, I think it's pretty old but it's still pretty cool. Just a bit short in length though.

Still don't know quite what to make out of all the movies coming from the Apatow gang. I'll probably end up seeing them all out of loyalty to "Freaks and Geeks," but the results have been mixed. Superbad and 40-Year-Old Virgin cracked me up, but Forgetting Sarah Marshall barely made me chuckle and I viscerally hated Knocked Up.
