the kings have been handing these out like cotton candy at a county fair. will this summer be different?

here are the current recipients
-John Salmons
-Reef
-Beno Udrih

Actually the only bad MLE signing I see there is Beno. Reef helped us out a bit in the playoffs and made a great big man coach. John Salmons put up all star like numbers and became one of our best players. Beno sucks.

Can't MLE when under the cap. Unfortunately we are not so far under as to be able to sign a big FA, and this is not a good FA year anyway. So if we do use the money, it would likely again be a shaky return on the money. The cap room might be of more value this year in allowing us great flexibility in putting together a trade or two.

Reef was a terrible signing BTW. He was fading even before he arrived. I knew that from doing no more than watching him play. New Jersey knew it from taking a look at his knees before finalizing big money for him. Only we did not. The reported giddiness from our front office over that signing made me ill -- its no fun when the people making decisions know less than you do about something, and they ain't taking your calls. Of course that's before we get to the question whether he ever had the game of a winning basketball player even when his legs were still good.

i thought they were all bad signings.

salmons - cancer waiting to happen because he wasn't starting and getting touches

reef - well brick layed it out pretty well.

beno - i don't even want to go through the many chapters of disappointment he has brought me last season. i'd rather watch douby try to run the team than that fool.

i was reading an article that the kings might try to attach a bad contract to the 4th pick & move down.. who could that be?

This isn't really the MLE, but this team is far enough under the cap where I wouldn't mind a big one year "show me something" (plus a team option) deal for Ike.
I wouldn't have a problem overpaying for something like that.

This Ike love has got to stop. There is not another team in the league that will offer him $3mil, there is no reason for us to do so. That capspace is one of the precious few assets we have right now, you don't blow it all on a gift to a 3 game wonder. If we really want him, we might be the only, or one of the only, serious bidders out there. No need to get all philantropic for no reason.

Yes, Salmons was a very good deal in terms of $ wise. He can score 20+ on any night and can defend the best perimeter players in the league. We saw what he did with Paul Pierce recently. Slowed PP down quite a bit.

The thing about the Salmons deal was that it a bold move by Petrie. It could've turned out to be a terrible signing, because at that point Salmons had proved absolutely nothing.

Salmons was also acquired at the behest of...Eric Musselman. Seriously -- I remember the article. Geoff consulted with him.

Thing about Salmons was it was a good talent evaluation...but really now, how good of a signing was it? We got worse every single year he was on the team, he wouldn't play off the bench, we had chemistry problems and ball stopping problems, we probably lost somewhere in the range of 70% of the games he started, and we finally dumped him to escape his contract. Was this really a good signing for us?

Well, in all fairness, because of Salmons - we did get Drew Gooden for a few days.

;)

:p

I think it was a good signing in respect to the talent level he had. I don't think however he was a good fit for the team in general. He was a good defender, something a little scarce on the current team, and a effective scorer. Unfortunately he needed the ball to be in his hands to be effective. When the team concept is to run a motion offense, which ever kind it happens to be, the last thing you need is for one of your key components to dribble the ball adnauseum.

I tend to agree with you. I liked what Ike brought off the bench at the end of the season. However, the players that can fill his role are a dime a dozen in this league.

Every once in a while one turns into something special, but most of them are just fodder for the bench who you hope can contribute more often than not.
