When Theus is fired, who should be his replacement?

So, When Reggie Theus is let go, who would you like to be his replacement?

Another an inexperienced project coach like Wisnant <sp?> or a veteran coach like Jeff Van Gundy (or is it Stan)?

With a quickly growing and performing nucleus of young players, it could really go either way. So which available coach would you like to see? Also, who is available that you would not like to see?

Brian Shaw was presumably the #2 choice before. He'd be good.

The squeaky little general that used to coach the Mavs seems to be ok.

Flip Saunders has somehow avoided the label "can't quite get it done" - but he has "not quite got it done" with some loaded teams... so he is the one I hope to avoid.

I can see them going with Chuck Person for the remainer of the year.

While this is certainly possible, I think it's more likely that if they do fire Theus, they'll also fire his closest lieutenant or second-in-command. Person has been the one who most often seems to have the ear of the coach.

Like I said when they hired Theus, they made a huge mistake passing on Shaw. I think they should at least try to get him in the offseason.

A male/female in his/her 20s, preferably a female, so incredibly hot that opposing teams are distracted by her....femininity. I want a coach who makes you think, like a 30 year old Don Nelson. He should be a cheap coach, and a coach that in a relative "unknown". I suggested a fan should be put on.

I wait till after the end of the season to hire a full time coach. Others will probably become available. The more to choose from, the better. In the meantime, you know what, I'd let the Maloofs run their little experiment with Whisehant. We know that he'll abide by the Maloofs wishes, and who knows, if he proves himself for a half of a year, at least the Maloofs will have some evidence that he can coach at this level.

If he's a failure, then the Maloofs can put that idea to rest and let Petrie decide who the next coach is.

Not sure if another rookie coach is the best option. Maybe Brian Shaw... Flip Saunders would be a very good coach here IMO. Eddie Jordan, not bad.

But I think hire Avery Johnson, Sam Mitchell or Jeff Van Gundy would be a big mistake.

If this is the case, be prepared to hear us called the Queens again

If they turned the reigns over to Whisenant, I doubt it would be a long term move nor do I think he would be an abject failure. How much worse can he do with this roster? What he will be able to do is get this bunch of defense adverse folk to sniff the concept of not letting opponents walk across their faces. And because he has the Maloof's ear he can at least get them realistic about the crap defensive talent they have on this roster.

He has a track record of assessing defensive skills and elevating the skills of folks not known as defensively gifted...for those who know don't know anything more about his background than his successful experience in the WNBA.

Yeah, like that'd make much difference.

Dude, we suck. At this point, most of the league looks right past us. We're a blip on their schedules and very little more. You generally see other teams and their fans make fun of teams that they consider worthy competitors. We aren't that, so I doubt if the hiring of Whis would make much difference in that regard.

You can always tell when our team is considered a threat or formidable foe by the number of trolls who show up on the board. I cannot actually remember the last time we had a real Laker troll here, or Mavs troll, or anything other than your run-of-the-mill "Hey, look at me. I'm an idiot" troll.

One nice thing about Whis would be that we'd know if the problem really is the coach or the owners, since we can assume that Whis would be the closest thing you can get to Joe or Gavin coaching the team themselves.

Not saying I want him to coach the team, but he's a company player and we'd at least know everyone's on the same page. The worst thing we could do is bring in another coach with something to prove. I think Avery Johnson definitely fits into that category, as do any of the guys getting their first chance. I'm not sure where Flip fits since he has had several jobs and successfully coached bad teams as well as good ones, you'd figure he understands the difference between the Pistons gig and the Kings one.

Im leaning towards hiring Avery or Flip Saunders

i dont see what is the problem with Avery stat wise he did a good job as head coach of the mavs

its not his fault his players choked on that finals

not his fault harris was traded for an aging kidd

not his fault dirk couldnt handle small balls... and they had an undersized SG in terry

can some one explain to me what was the deal with avery which lead to his firing? and whats so bad if he tried a year or two here he does develop young ones right...

i mean the guy played with david robinson, and under coach pop if i remember..

Sorry, Aenadin, but any time I read THREE "not his fault" about one person, I get a funny kind of tingling on the back of my neck.

No one knows for sure what led to his firing, but the point is that by the time he was fired his entire team had pretty much quit on him and individuals had gone to Cuban, demanding either he go or they go. Most players may grumble, but going en masse to the ownership to demand trades is virtually unheard of. Who he played with has less relevance than just about anything else.

Avery is, from all reports, a total control freak, much like Muss but with better credentials. He may also suffer a napoleonic complex, which would go a long way towards explaining why he lost touch with and control of his team.

We don't need Avery Johnson and I cannot imagine a scenario where the Maloofs would even consider him.

yeah i just assumed he got canned cause i know mark cuban is a total *** and is always that win and win kind of mentality.....

well now we ask ourselves who can be the replacement if he does get fired... a rotation of rookie coaches only prolongs the rebuilding.. though it does give us a stockpile of talent

I just changed my mind. If they fire Reggie they need to make Whiz the interm coach. Sink or swim. Otherwise the next coach will have be successful off the bat or they will have Whiz in line for interm again. Just get it over with. Not that I think it's the correct choice.

I like Shaw (he'd also bring Horry in as an assistant), Jordan, Avery. I just wonder how much the Maloofs are willing to pay?

I'd like to give Shaw a try, but that's not possible until the summer (and no guarantee he'd take the job). That means an interim coach if Reggie gets canned midseason.

+1, good call

I don't see any reason why we can't hire our guy right now. Give him the rest of the year to evaluate, he'll be prepared for the draft, we won't have to spend the first half of the season next year watching him get acclimated to the players on the team, and vice versa.

I'm not sure there's anyone that could come available this summer that we'd necessarily want, outside of Brian Shaw with the Lakers. If SVG gets canned, I honestly couldn't see the Maloofs reaching out to him after the way he used us. Who else is there? Iavaroni? He'll either have a terrible season from this point out and get fired, or he'll have a pretty good second half and stay on; either way, I don't see us grabbing him. Again, who else is there?

Because you can't hire assistant coaches from other teams during the season. They can only interview coaches currently not working for another team.
