Despite several about a million errands that need to be taken care of, today was movie day. I watched:
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Even though I'd seen it in the theater, I added it to my Blockbuster queue as soon as it hit DVD because I liked it so much initially. On the second viewing, however, it disappointed me. Not because it wasn't good, but because Brad Pitt wasn't very good in it. I wouldn't go quite so far as to say he's bad as James, necessarily, but it's definitely a step backward. Also, there's a bit of a silly narration device that starts off distracting, but becomes less so three hours in. Other than that, however, I really liked this one. The pace is slow, perhaps too slow, but the other performances are very good, and damned if it isn't one of the most beautiful films I've seen in a while.
The Great Debaters. This is one that I specifically avoided in theaters, and don't really even remember adding to my queue until it was magically in my mail. I decided to go ahead and watch it, even though I don't normally like this type of film -- you always know that the little engine is invariably going to chug its way up the hill, so all the dramatic highs and lows along the way feel more like manipulations than tension. However, this one was incredibly well made and well acted. Predictable as all get out, but it got me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Statham Job... I mean, The Bank Statham... dammit!
The Bank Job. I liked it.
And not just for hormonal reasons. It's much less action/comedy-y than the commercials would lead you to believe, which is a good thing. I watched it expecting a British
Ocean's 11 set in the 70s, but it works quite nicely as a more serious heist film. I don't forsee any Oscar nominations, but the performances are all enjoyable and the story is engaging.
