what was the last movie you watched?

Also watched Find Me Guilty on the OnDemand, this movie which I had never heard and supposedly bases most of the lines on actual courtroom testimony was hilarious if that's actually true.
Yeah, I think I may have mentioned that one in this thread a while ago. I caught it on cable and was pleasantly surprised.

Despite trying not to get too hyped for it, I gave in and saw Hellboy II this afternoon.

I must admit, I really enjoyed it. There's something about this franchise that I find very likable. I'm sure there are plenty of things people will find to criticize, and I'm also sure that most of those criticisms will be perfectly justified, but as I was watching the film I didn't care one little bit.

Well... except for in the case of an art historical inaccuracy in a few of the early scenes that annoyed the hell out of me. But, I only noticed that because I'm a nerd.
I don't think I liked this one as much as the first. It seems that they tried too hard. Cliche after cliche with some obviously fortelling scenes as well. Not a bad movie, but I really liked the freshness of the first. It felt too packed with stuff, like Spiderman 3.

Okay, been storing these up:

Transformers -- ugh. much dumber than I had hoped after avoiding it last summer. Of course since I knew who directed it, its my own fault for lsitening to fanboys.

300 -- ugh 2. Avoided this one for 2 years, fearing it would be hyped up super-stylized macho junk food taking a potty break on history (my brother confirmed said assessment). And gee, what did it turn out to be?

Anatomy -- shrug. Proving that Europe can make completely cliched utterly average seen-it-all-before horror flicks just as well as Hollywood.

Casino Royale -- shrug. Nice pecs. Somehow I don't remember that being Bond's defining characteristic. New guy has all the suave and charm of those socks I worked out in last week and haven't washed yet. Last 1/4 finally got around to a little development and emotion, but as pure drama.

Aliens in the West -- omg. I just added another one to my Alien 51/Skeleton Man etc. pantheon of godawfulness. Well, as far as I could tell from the 12 minutes I lasted. But the acting here...might have actualy been worse than Aline 51. That's a tough call. Both are so impossibly bad, but I think its right there in awfulness.

Ghouls -- omg2. Been some months since I braved a scifi channel movie. There is a reason for that. Lasted 14 minutes in this one before I decided I has seen it all before -- literally every one of their ultra cheapies is shot in the same Romanian forest and/or abandoned industrial complex with the same terrible acting and same nonsensical plot and crappy effects -- they are a basically a movie sweat shop turning out completely unwatchable junk at this point. Just boring as hell.

All Over Me -- shrug. Late 90s indie flick about a couple of girls facing a crisis growing up in Hell's Kitchen. It was trying to say something, but got swallowed up by bad acting, repetitive scripting, and nothing much happening.

Diary of the Dead -- ugh. Romero now reduced to direct to video hack, and experimenting with the character who carries the camera fad. Except here it really does not work, especially when he very foolishly gives a second character a camera too so that one or the other is always being filmed by the other one (and thus on screen looking silly), and in scene after scene these camera people stand around uselessly filming while their friends are attacked by zombies. Fortunately since there is only one even remotely interesting character, you barely care.

Premonition -- shrug. Latest completely shrugworthy Sandra Bullock flick, where once again they have done a marvelous job completely suppressing any charm she might have. The premise sounded mildly interesting. Then they tried to combine it with an experiment to see if they could make you fall asleep before the climax.

Little Women -- inc. I tried, I really tried. However as a creature who naturally has testosterone flowing through his veins I found myself completely repulsed and defeated by said movie in under half an hour and had to flee the scene before I permanently lost the ability to have children.

Well...yes.

But that's also about a monthly total (of at least ones I had not seen), and I did not complete Aliens in the West, Ghouls, 300, or Little Women, so... :p

oops, forgot:

The Last King of Scotland -- high quality mostly depressing film (although not so high as the rep would suggest). Of course only mostly depressing because you really do not like any of the characters in the movie. Sort of thing that has almost zero rewatchability.

Casino Royale -- shrug. Nice pecs. Somehow I don't remember that being Bond's defining characteristic. New guy has all the suave and charm of those socks I worked out in last week and haven't washed yet. Last 1/4 finally got around to a little development and emotion, but as pure drama.
Thank you! I was starting to feel like maybe I was taking crazy pills for not liking Daniel Craig.

Shoulda been Clive Owen (yes, I know you don't like him, but hush) or Ewan McGregor.

Sandra Bullock might have charm? Now I think maybe you're the one taking crazy pills.

Hancock, it would have been a lot better if I didn't have these guys sitting behind me laughing the loudest I've ever heard a person laugh. It was like they never seen Will Smith before and every little mannerism made them explode. The plot twist was ruined for me thanks to the previews that they showed for the movie earlier in the summer.

Man, you really were avoiding that one. I mean, its barely been out a year yet somehow you managed to avoid it for 2 whole years

Also, I said this in the movie thread, but if you went into this movie wanting it to be some historical biopic, that's your fault. Its suppose to be an action movie.. Think Rambo, but with some light historical backgrounds. And actually good :D

Think insipid and pandering (actually rather insulting) to the young males it is aiming at, with terrible dialogue, garishly overblown macho-acting, and like most style over substance pieces, trying desperately to distract you from its soulessness with a lot of CGI. The historical butchery is only an additional annoyance because I know some significant percentage of its target demographic will have no other idea of the actual history and take it as pseudo gospel.

Comparatively Rambo with its brooding meditations on not being able to escape what you are and the awfulness of man's inhumanity to man was high art, like Unforgiven light or some such.

But it looked soooo cool!

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants..

wasn't really expecting much. boy, was i wrong...

a well thought out, well written, well acted movie around a pair of pants of all things.

(I shoulda had a tissue box.)

Despite several about a million errands that need to be taken care of, today was movie day. I watched:

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Even though I'd seen it in the theater, I added it to my Blockbuster queue as soon as it hit DVD because I liked it so much initially. On the second viewing, however, it disappointed me. Not because it wasn't good, but because Brad Pitt wasn't very good in it. I wouldn't go quite so far as to say he's bad as James, necessarily, but it's definitely a step backward. Also, there's a bit of a silly narration device that starts off distracting, but becomes less so three hours in. Other than that, however, I really liked this one. The pace is slow, perhaps too slow, but the other performances are very good, and damned if it isn't one of the most beautiful films I've seen in a while.

The Great Debaters
. This is one that I specifically avoided in theaters, and don't really even remember adding to my queue until it was magically in my mail. I decided to go ahead and watch it, even though I don't normally like this type of film -- you always know that the little engine is invariably going to chug its way up the hill, so all the dramatic highs and lows along the way feel more like manipulations than tension. However, this one was incredibly well made and well acted. Predictable as all get out, but it got me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Statham Job... I mean, The Bank Statham... dammit! The Bank Job. I liked it. :D And not just for hormonal reasons. It's much less action/comedy-y than the commercials would lead you to believe, which is a good thing. I watched it expecting a British Ocean's 11 set in the 70s, but it works quite nicely as a more serious heist film. I don't forsee any Oscar nominations, but the performances are all enjoyable and the story is engaging.

Anatomie 2 -- less than shrug. Sequel to Anatomy, which I mentioned above as a thoroughly cliched and mediocre Euro horror flick. Except this one wasn't even that good and teetered along on the precipice of just being flat out bad.

Being Julia -- more than shrug. Star vehicle for Annette Bening about an aging 1930s screen star having an affair with a younger man etc. I'm sure it thought it was going to be rather better than it turned out. Above average film and decent period piece, but rarely memorable.

Babe -- cute. Yes, I finally saw the 1995 film about a talking pig. While having a ham sandwich. :D Thought it was cute, but have to wonder if there might not have been an agenda there squarely targeting kids in questionable fashion.

I agree. Saw it in the theater and enjoyed it.

WALL-E: Once I came home from this movie I realized something. The first half hour of this movie is probably the best half hour of cinema I have ever seen in my life. Its not just the perfect animation and effects, its the way Pixar can make you feel the emotions of this mechanical robot in some way no other movie studio can. The rest of the movie is not the masterpiece of the first bit, but its good enough to make this another Pixar classic. They really cannot miss.

Just got back from The Dark Knight.

That was every type of awesome you could possibly imagine all rolled into one movie. I was going to write something more in depth, but I'm like a walking pile of onomatopoeia right now.

Also, the previews for The Spirit and Watchmen were pretty impressive. Both look like the kind of movies that, if they fail they will fail BIG, but if they succeed will be absolutely amazing visually.

Well haruumph. While some of you seem to have been running around wasting your time watching blockbuster masterpieces, I instead was watching:

Outpost (2007) -- thumbs sideways. Grade Z ultra low budget horror flick that actually deserves some real credit -- the acting, characters, attention to details such as believable soliders and squad tactics etc. all deserve a lot of credit. Far FAR better than what you usuaslly see in that genre, and a legit attempt. Unfortunately scuttled by no budget and some odd sloppiness about the opponents.

just got back from dark knight. good movie. very good movie. but i need to seriously, seriously stop reading reviews prior to viewing. i guess i'm the only person on planet earth who is not absolutely nuts about this movie. go figure.

by the way, i do agree with all the praise ledger got for this role. very impressive.
