What to expect from Shelden Williams in 08/09

I have expectations all over the place for different Kings (high for some, low for others, and Douby is in his "Make or Break" year), but I am not sure what is expected from Shelden Williams for 08-09.

I guess I have high hopes for Shelden; my hope is that he can become more productive around the basket and get a ton of rebounds. I would hope to see him come off the bench and give the Kings some kind of boost either getting physical, providing energy, or as a defensive/rebounding specialist.

What do you expect?

Also, is 08-09 his final contract year or does he have more?

I'm hoping Sheldon can come around as well. If he can become a hustle guy and play physical, thats really going to help and change the outlook of the team in terms of rebounds and toughness.

He has a big body, granted he is shorter than some other big men, he should still be able to get rebounds if he works hard to get position. Sheldon needs to work on his stamina because it seems like he gets winded quick even just coming off the bench. He should look at his girl Candence Parker for motivation. One is becoming the biggest star in the WNBA while this may be Sheldon's last year in the league if he sucks again. I hope he comes through.

williams is garbage... the only pick in that draft that was worse than williams was douby...

Well, at least you are a "the glass is half full" sort of thinker. I am saving my assessment of both of those players until after this season... this is the season where it is time to shine or go home.

Hopefully a slightly better Malik Rose from when Malik Rose was good -- pesky hustler who annoys the opposing team and uses 4 fouls in 15 minutes a game.

In a way, I hope Shelden just excels against one team and that team will be so impressed they want to make a sweetheart deal for him... The Kings did this a few times...

I expect him to likely be pinned to the bench unless we make some trades (with Brad, Hawes, Mikki and Thompson all ahead of him). And if he is, that probably really sets him up for a journeyman type career.

i dont have any expectations. i just want him to get minutes. the expectations will follow after he's had a decent amount of time on the court

I think the only way he gets minutes is if:
1. A trade goes down moving another PF and/or Artest
2. If Shelden comes, well, out of his shell at Summer league and practice earning some playing time and a place in the gameplan.

I only wish Shelden would display as much game on the court as he did when he snagged Candace Parker.

There is no way Shelden gets any minutes on this team. Hell, the way things are going, I think he'd be happy with a journeyman career. As it stands, he's in for yet another wasted season, after which he'll be one chance from being drummed out of the league.

I am probably one of Williams biggest fans, but I don't see a future for him here. We drafted Thompson for a reason.. You usually don't draft a PF when you have a top five lotto pick PF from two years ago unless things aren't working out. Shelden needs to change his image into a role player and go with it if he's to make it in the league.

I expect Sheldon to be a contributer to the team..... the team he'll be playing for in Poland. His only future is in Europe. He's a bust for a top 5 pick, no other way to look at it.

I suspect that Williams will be traded to a team that is willing to take a risk on another young big man. He's a guy that should be better than he is. Physically the kid is gifted, he just needs that drive to work to get better.

I could see moving Williams to Memphis for one of their extra PGs (not Jaric)

A jouneyman career is not a bad thing. Ask VinnyD. Sheldon has not shown me a thing, but he's saying that this year's training camp will allow him to show what he can do. I'm going to hold him to that statement. If he shows nothing during training camp, I will assume he can do nothing.

I dont have any expectations for Williams. I just dont think he has a place on this team or this league, like most former Duke players.

We've not really seen many minutes from Shelden and those few were at the end of the year with a new player in a new lineup. There were flashes of a good player but that was it.

Summer league and training camp will be the first time for him to get significant minutes against his peers. He has the tools and NBA body and the 4 year pedigree at Duke. Now we need to see if he is hungry and has the explosiveness need for an NBA PF. Having Jason in camp will give him someone to go 1-on-1 with.

The summer league team will have only 4-5 days of practice to see what they have before their first game on Saturday the 12th.

So it is way too soon to pass judgement on Shelden but by end of october we should know for sure and we'll at least have a chance to see him get some minutes in summer league tho' not in every game.

Sheldon needs to develop a little bit of nastiness. If your a wide body without serious hops and agility, then you need to create a few bruises. So far, he just seems like a nice guy on the court. I would like to see the other teams players complaining to the refs about him when he's on the court.

you didn't see him go at pau gasol? he manhandled him on the block.

At the beginning of the season, start Mikki at PF with Jason as his backup. If Jason struggles at some point (most rookies do), give his minutes to Shelden -- that's a motivator for Jason and an opportunity for Shelden to show what he can do. Hopefully Jason will be ready to start in Jan-Feb; Shelden's play will determine whether he or Mikki get the bulk of the backup minutes at PF.

Jason is the full-sized PF we've been missing since Webber left, and his development should be given priority over Shelden's.

Shelden can only do so much. I see him as a slightly undersized PF in this league--although on several occasions I have mentioned him as a center in an undersized PF's body--and for undersized PFs, we have two types: those who are hustlers/bangers/rebounders/shotblockers defensively or those who have a highly established inside-outside game and are reliable offensive forces with high efficiency. The first group includes guys like Jason Maxiell, Ronny Turiaf, and Paul Millsap--they have above average athleticism to make up for their lack of height and have great motors. The second group includes guys like Leon Powe, Craig Smith, and Carl Landry--these types tend to burly bigs with a wide girth with some level of athleticism. There are specialists--i.e. Reggie Evans is a one-dimensional rebounder, and there are fundamentally sound PFs who have converted to SFs--Ryan Gomes and Udonis Haslem comes to mind. All these undersized PFs have succeeded in the league at some level.

The problem with Shelden is that he not only lacks a specialist skill that he can depend on, he lacks athleticism to the nth degree and is earthbound. Thus, that negates all the shotblocking and rebounding he can do in this league that he did in college and puts him in the second group--but he doesn't fit the second group either because he's not even an offensive force to begin with--never was in college either. I think work ethic has to be considered, because he hasn't developed any specialties like Evans nor has he made a drastic overhaul in his game like Haslem--but ultimately, he doesn't fit the first or second successful tiers I've mentioned, and for now he's just a big body. That's it. Little potential there.

Being a #5 pick, I expect him to bring us a Championship, like Boston's #5 pick single-handedly did last year. :p
