Welcome Devin Carter

Easy.

I doubt he'll ever be an All Star but I feel like this guy is going to sell a lot of jerseys!

Super pumped for his eventual debut.
No, he won't. What he will be is a hard working multi-faceted player who gives it his all at all times and just makes things happen. He has that pedigree and that nature.

I'm also excited for his debut. It's coming sooner rather than later and his arrival should be quite timely.

His shooting splits were really good so I’m fine with his stroke as is as long as it continues to go in.
His finish looks really good, his load is just awkward and slow. But like you said, who cares, if it goes in, it goes in.
Low but the arc on that shot is about as good as it gets.
Far too many talent evaluators and fans get caught up in the eye test when it comes to shooting form, when they should only be concerned with results.

WRT the KINGS, both Kevin Martin and Peja Stojakovic had odd forms yet the shots went in at a fairly high rate. When Tyrese Haliburton was here the same thing applied.

Hell, I’d argue that Larry Bird was the greatest pure shooter the game has seen, in my lifetime anyway, and even he had a funky looking shooting motion.

It doesn’t matter how it looks, just that it goes in a lot more than not. Especially so when things matter most.

Bird's form was weird how he almost threw it overhead... haha

Peja's was weird too but most of the time it was one fluid motion, same as K-Mart's samurai-sword hip drawing form lol

The only true concern one should have regarding shooting form, aside from the outcome, is maintaining a consistent rhythm and ensuring the arc of the shot is not too low, to avoid the risk of being blocked.

Form matters little. But the release does seem a bit low and slow, which raises at least a few concerns in my mind about it getting blocked more than we would like.
it does seem low but it seems 3 pointers don’t get blocked often. The Clippers lead the league with 14 blocked 3 pointers on the season through 25 games. A few years ago Chris Boucher was blocking threes at a rate of .95 per 100 possessions which was one of the highest numbers ever.

Slow release obviously can play a factor, no doubt. Especially so if the release point is low or the player is smaller and doesn't have length, as they'll require more space to get the shot off.

But form means nothing if the result is good.

Agreed. I don't think Carter likely becomes a franchise player type, but i think he's got a great chance to be the sort of role player you NEED to win in the playoffs.

IIRC didn't Peja's shot have an odd, sort of side spin to it? I'd have to go back and look to be sure, but I seem to recall an odd release to it.
For an all-time great shooter, Peja's shot had a lot of quirks. He often had his knees pointing inward (Keon does this too) and he'd bring the ball across his face which means he was rotating his right palm as he went into his shot motion. His actual release had the ball above his head (rather than off to the right) and his right elbow was very high.

But even with all that, his actual release was very sound and he generally had good, consistent rotation on the ball.

SLAB

Hall of Famer
I forgot this guy exists until the thread got bumped. It’s going to be a nice bonus to get a lottery pick halfway into the season. Think of it like a trade addition without actually having to make a trade.

Kevin had his surgery on April 5th and was cleared for full contact on October 11th. If we use that same timeline Carter would be cleared on roughly January 17th. Figure one weeks worth of full practice or so. My prediction is he returns on January 23rd but won’t be surprised if it’s sooner. That would leave 32 games left in the season at that point, plenty of time to make an impact.

I wonder if we hold him out for the year and let him go through a normal acclimation process with Summer League et al. Jumping in for the back half of the season disrupts rotations and may make for a confidence damaging rough start.

If he returns, I'm looking at it more as just someone new to pay attention to and be interested in. I have zero expectations that a rookie with no SL, preseason and much full contact practice time can just step in halfway through the season and play anything other than losing ball to begin with.

I get the skepticism but plenty of rookies have stepped in and been a winning player right away including our own Keegan Murray. Jaylen Wells has started 20 games for the 17-8 Grizzlies this year is another example. Dude has been around the league his whole life and is swagger personified. I fully expect him to contribute defensively right away. The conference he played in is often cited as the most similar to NBA style ball too.

I do feel like we’re downplaying the fact Devin put up some of the best athleticism measurements ever recorded at the NBA combine.
I mean i think that's the real differentiator right? He's 6'3, but a huge 6'9 wingspan (I swear to god if sactowndog quotes his standing reach...) and he's a legit freak athlete. Add in a motor that pretty much every draft evaluator says is special (or just watch one game of him play), it's truly hard to see how he fails. I think the offense probably is pretty bad this year when he comes back, but the defense should be very good off-rip.

He's going to have to prove he can shoot at the NBA level, absolutely. But he literally checks every box to be a game-changing elite defender at the NBA level, with the versatility to slide right next to Fox or Monk.
