Monk as Starter

#92
I have faith in Monk as starting point guard and think he is the teams best bet (at least for the remainder of this season). His new role is not an easy one to adjust to. Prior to this the only thing he had to focus on was getting himself buckets. He pretty much had an entire shot clock to himself. Now he needs to learn when he should to set up the offense vs when to defer to Sabonis, when he does defer where does he go that he's not in the way of Lavine and DD, when should he look for Lavine and DD over his own shot etc, etc. No player on this team has had their role change as much as Monk and I think he will need the most time to get acclimated.

For real. Backup SG to starting PG in a season is a huge role change.

Get the man some more practices and I think it's a safe bet that he'll start balling out again soon.

Monk's record as a starter this year was 25-20, or 55.5%.

Keon Ellis's record as a starter has been 15-13, or 53.5%. He has a chance to improve on that, starting tomorrow night.

I’m sure the advanced stats will proof the eyeball test wrong but from my viewpoint Keon’s defense makes all the difference in the world in the starting lineup. I love monk, but you can’t put him out there with two guys that don’t play defense one guy that’s a bit handicapped and only one hard nose defender. The combos of Keon/Carter and Murray/Lyles have made it tolerable to keep both Debo and Lavine in a functional starting five AND a pretty bruising, full second team with JV &Laravia

Right now the on/off numbers for Carter are borderline insanity. He's been making that much of a difference on defense.

Your eyeballs still work well!

Advanced stats and the eye test both love Keon. Usually a pretty damn good indicator that we got a special player when a guy looks great on the floor and the numbers back it up.

Only 397 minutes, but the Kings were 3.2 points better on defense with him on the floor. If that held up over regular rotation minutes (meaning 1000+), would be absolutely mind-bogglingly good for a rookie on defense.
Just think of how good he'd be if the refs weren't intentionally trying to foul him out of the game 5 minutes into his first stint.
