is it just me, or does HD not seem different from the SD of just a few years ago? i feel like it's some sort of conspiracy, where they purposely degraded the image quality and called that "SD" so what used to be "SD" is now "HD."
HD definitely looks better than the "old" SD. It's strikingly different. 1080i has 2.25 times as much resolution than the 480i of SD. But I think there are two factors that I've seen that could lead one to that question.
The first is that in my experience, the HD converter box (either cable or satellite) usually does a pretty bad job of converting an analog SD signal into the digital signal used for HDMI input on an HDTV. I don't know if this is by design or not, but things look especially bad during scenes with lots of motion, like basketball games. But the difference is striking if you compare SD on HDMI through a converter box, and the 480i analog output of a DVD player through, say, the component input. The DVD looks WAY better. I just don't know if that's a deliberate design flaw in the converter box, but I would assume they could do a better SD conversion if they tried.
The second is that some "HD" broadcasts, like the road games shown on KXTV, do not appear to have been transmitted in HD. They appear to have been transmitted in 480i SD and then upconverted at the station to 720i, as TheClash4u5 pointed out above during the game in L.A. You obviously completely lose the benefits of HD when the original signal is not full-resolution. This is pretty rare, though.
They've been airing the same stuff as FX for 3 days and i didnt mind it, but the kings game is on csn tonight and i dont wanna miss it. Anyone else having this problem?Anyone know whats going on or when they're gonna fix it?
HELP! I currently watch Kings games on DirecTV but I'm moving to the bay area this weekend! The house I'm moving into has DISH and they carry Comcast, but it always gets blacked out!
How do I watch my Kings??? League Pass the only way??

I just thought of this idea, so I have no idea if there are any problems with it, but for almost the same price as League Pass (maybe cheaper) you can buy a Slingbox and set it up at your family member's house in the Sacramento area. Then watch the Kings games through that over the internet.
Yeah, I just decided to check and it is a lot more expensive than a half season of league pass. (One slingbox is $154 on amazon when I just looked, and a half season of league pass starting 1/22/09 is $99-ish I think.)
Yes, it is completely legal. It's designed for you to use when traveling or otherwise away from your TV. I guess theoretically there might be issues with setting it up on a family member's TV that isn't in your household, but I'm not sure why that would be a problem.
