Taj Gibson?

#1
I think he's a pretty great fit for us to put next to DeMarcus, and that he's a very capable starting PF in this league that fits most of our needs as far as being a close to elite defender at the PF position, able to protect the rim, and also play within the offense and stretch the floor without needing many touches at all.

I saw a trade suggested in RealGM where we send the #7 + JT, for Taj and #16. (Assuming we stay at #7)

Would you pull the trigger?

Would I? Absolutely.

Would the Bulls? Not only no, but hell no. I don't see them giving up Gibson for anybody on our squad not named DeMarcus Cousins. They might give up Gibson for Thompson and a Top 3 pick, but why would we make that trade?

Bulls won't trade him till free agency if they need to shed his contract to get Carmelo. Then we could give them whoever we draft of course this won't work cause it won't match up salary wise and they won't want anymore salary than our pick.

Btw the trade I opened the thread due to is a three way trade in the lines of :

Orlando sends : Arron Afflalo and Andrew Nicholson
Orlando receives : #7 , Jason Thompson

Chicago : sends Taj Gibson, #16
Chicago receives : Arron Afflalo, Andrew Nicholson

Sacramento sends : Jason Thompson, #7
Sacramento receives : Taj Gibson, #16

I would be much more inclined to offer #7 and Landry for Gibson and no pick. I would much rather find a way to get Landry off the books. A big man rotation of Cousins, Gibson, and Thompson is very solid. Granted we would have a lot of money in our frontcourt (approx $27 mil), but again, it would be a very effective frontcourt. Ideally, you would look to move Thompson for another solid 3rd big who doesn't get paid as much so you can spend that money elsewhere, but for the time being, I would be happy with that frontcourt in the short term.

Looking at it from the Bulls side, I don't really see them biting on a deal like this. They love Gibson...a lot. They would have to be committed to a full rebuild for them to even think about getting rid of Gibson.

The key bonus to dealing with Chicago is this:

you don't offer #7 so much as you just offer to remove the ongoing restriction on that pick -- remember the Bulls hold that old option the Cavs used to after the JJ Hickson/Casspi trade. So you say, let's waive the restriction, so you go ahead and get #7 this year, but no longer hold options on future picks. That would free us up tremendously to make other moves in the future, and is worth not trying to get the #16 back from them.

And yes, Gibson could play next to Cuz and significantly stiffen our defense. Such a Thibs favorite though, and with them actively determined to shed Boozer this offseason too. Being able to pry him loose might depend a bit on Thibs fate/ongoing dispute with management there. Should be noted he's nto actually as young as you think he is: he came into the league old (24), so he's already going to be 29. That's fine for us to eke out those last 5 years and establish Cuz as a winner early in his career. But it might provide some excuse for the Bulls if management's odd fascination with rebuilding with youth around a damaged rose continues. I do wonder at the point they've sold off Gibson for youth too, what is the point of still having old man Noah. But I suppose he is kind of running the team now, and somebody will have to guide all the kids they seem to want to add.

Like Gibson but apparently not as much as some of you. Giving up the 7th pick for him is stupidity. Yeah I get that he fits next to Cuz, but draft right and you'll get a far better player. I wouldn't even think about giving up this pick for him unless we're getting the 16th pick back. He fits, but it's not like you're getting Ibaka back where it's going to completely change your future.

Yah I wouldn't do that trade either. I like Gibson, but I think that we could get a better player in the draft. Not a better fit next to Cousins in the draft but an overall better player at #7. Maybe in the future offer up a deal to get Gibson, but not now and not for #7.

Gibson would be a great pickup...but if we're talking shot-blockers to pair with Cuz, no one's a better fit than Serge Ibaka, who's also killer from midrange.

We have no shot at Gibson too
I don't know. The chance is remote, but Chicago seems hellbent on chasing Carmelo in the offseason. Amnesty on Boozer won't get them there. They will have to shed salary to offer Carmelo a max deal. Gibson is the only real piece they have worth dealing, and they have contract rights to Nikola Mirotic to fill in if he were dealt.

The Kings draft pick this year should be very tempting to them, but it would be contingent on landing Carmelo.

The problem with the 7th pick this year is that you don't want to rely on him. Assuming Rudy elects to stay in the offseason, the Kings really need to push for the playoffs this year to keep him for another contract. If the Kings were in year one of a three year rebuild, then you go with the draft pick. Gibson is a win-now move which is what your max contract center and small forward want to work with. The draft pick may very well end up being the better player, but Gibson is a good to very good player that fits the timetable.

If Rudy stays then do you believe we would have the $$ to offer IT a contract? There would have to be a PG involved with the trade for me to want to do anything like that, and not Hinrich. I do not want to start the season with a loaded front court and then McLemore, and McCallum starting the back court or Hinrich and McLemore.

I think the Kings would have around $7 million to work with to re-sign IT before hitting the estimated $77 million tax limit--accounting for the $3 million or so from the pick, assuming the Kings pick 7th again and that they don't waive Acy (who is non-guaranteed if waived before July 26).

Of course, they can go over the limit for the summer, and try to deal JT, Williams, or Outlaw for lesser per/year salary, or perhaps buy out Terry. They have before the end of 14-15 to get below the limit, so there's definitely time. And that's assuming they aren't willing to dip into the tax just for a year to remain increasingly competitive.

If Thibs is headed to LA we MIGHT have a shot at him. They may want to do some house cleaning if he moves on.
Yeah, same thought.

People are understimating the apparent disjunction in Chicago between its coach and front office. They keep taking away Thibs' toys, and wanting to strip down and rebuild. If Thibs himself were to go, all bets are off. I wouldn't even guarantee Noah stays if he goes (al\though I certainly think he does). For some reason Chciago management has done these things in the past too. different GMs, but same theory. They were quite determined to break up the Jordan team in '99. They decided to trade Brand for the #2 pick in 2002 or whatever. Thibs is a scrappy coach and he wants to fight fight fight with whatever they have and claw out those low playoff seeds. Management seems more interested in cleaning things up financially and trying to hit a homerun, whether in the draft or with a big superstar FA signing. Could Gibson be one of the guys they keep in that scenario? Sure. But he doesn't have to be.

But how would that trade work. They would want to shed his salary and we won't be able to absurd his contract just by giving them our pick.

That's pretty much my opinion as well!

If Thibs bolts, all bets are off and just about anyone would become available. I would prefer Noah but would settle for Gibson. Wouldn't mind pinching Butler either! :p
