ARAGORN

aragorn.jpg

According to the appendices of The Return of the King, Aragorn, named after his ancestor Aragorn I, was born on March 1 in 2931 of the Third Age, the son of Arathorn II and his wife Gilraen. Through his ancestor Elendil (whom he closely resembled)[1] Aragorn was a descendant of Elros Tar-Minyatur, Master Elrond's Half-elven twin brother and the first king of Númenor. Aragorn is descended from both of Elendil's sons, from Isildur through Arvedui, last King of Arthedain, and from Anárion through Arvedui's wife Fíriel.
When Aragorn was only two years old, his father was killed while pursuing Orcs. Aragorn was afterwards fostered in Rivendell by Elrond. At the request of his mother, his lineage was kept secret, as she feared he would be killed like his father and grandfather if his true identity as the descendant of Elendil and Heir of Isildur became known. Aragorn was renamed Estel and was not told about his heritage until he came of age in 2951.
Elrond revealed to "Estel" (hope in Sindarin) his true name and ancestry when he came of age, and delivered to him the shards of Elendil's sword, Narsil, and the Ring of Barahir. He withheld the Sceptre of Annúminas from him until he "came of the right" to possess it. It was also around this time that Aragorn met and fell in love with Arwen, Elrond's daughter, who had newly returned from her mother's homeland of Lórien.
Aragorn thereafter assumed his proper role as the sixteenth Chieftain of the Dúnedain, the Rangers of the North, and went into the wild, where lived the remnants of his people, whose kingdom had been destroyed through civil and regional wars centuries before.
Aragorn met Gandalf the Grey in 2956, and they became close friends. At Gandalf's advice he and his followers began to guard a small land known as the Shire, inhabited by the diminutive and agrarian Hobbits, and he became known among the peoples just outside the Shire's borders as Strider.
From 2957 to 2980, Aragorn undertook great journeys, serving in the armies of King Thengel of Rohan (King Théoden's father), and Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor (father of Denethor). Many of his tasks helped to raise morale in the West and counter the growing threat of Sauron and his allies, and he acquired invaluable experience which he would later put to use in the War of the Ring. Aragorn served his lords in disguise and his name in Gondor and Rohan during that time was Thorongil (Eagle of the Star). With a small Gondorian squadron of ships, he led an assault on the long-standing rebel province of Umbar in 2980, burning many of the Corsairs' ships and personally slaying their lord during the battle on the Havens. After the victory at Umbar, "Thorongil" left the field and to the dismay of his men, went East.
Later in 2980, he visited Lórien, and there once again met Arwen. He gave her the heirloom of his House, the Ring of Barahir, and, on the hill of Cerin Amroth, Arwen pledged her hand to him in marriage, renouncing her Elvish lineage and accepting the Gift of Men: death.
Elrond withheld from Aragorn permission to marry his daughter until such time as his foster son should be king of both Gondor and Arnor. To Elrond's as well as Aragorn's knowledge, in order to marry a mortal his daughter would be required to choose mortality, and thus deprive the deathless Elrond of his daughter while the world lasted. Elrond was also concerned for Arwen's own happiness, fearing that in the end she might find death (her own and that of her beloved) too difficult to bear.
Before the events of The Lord of the Rings proper take place, Aragorn also travelled through the Dwarven mines of Moria, and to Harad, where (in his own words) "the stars are strange". Tolkien does not specify when these travels occurred.

Selene

Selene the super-vampirette of the Underworld series. While I know that in comicbookland you are supposed to get all excited by females who consist of a bunch of scribbles, I will take the flesh and blood alternative, thanks, especially when she looks like this. Selene was always pretty badass, but I'm specifically taking her from her pinnacle at the end of the second movie, by which time she has drunk the blood of the oldest of the vampires and been turned into a super-vampire capable of amazing feats of strength, able to withstand direct sunlight etc. She'll kick a little ***, and really now, assuming the implementation of a strict no hickey rule, where is it written that the bad guys are the only ones who get to have concubines? :)

I sincerely hope that Brick's choosing of the little vampire lass wasn't an attempt to top me in the fetish gear department. My next pick:

aeonfluxcartoon18.jpg

Aeon Flux - Animated (1991-1995) -- And here's the pick where I firmly illustrate my allegiance to style points. Aeon is, no doubt, a badass. Her first appearance in an animated short on MTV was a dialog free romp through an undisclosed/unexplained factory of some sort in which she killed so many Breen soldiers (those are the bodies falling behind her in the above picture) that they were stacked up in piles roughly two or three storeys high and writhing in a lake of their own blood -- and all in a costume made up of roughly the same amount of material I've currently got on my feet. Additionally, since she has died quite grusomely in several episodes and has been cloned in others, I'm going to go ahead and argue that should could be considered immortal. No, I'm not at all concerned with this pick in terms of overall competence or abilities, even when matched against some of the omnipotent baddies, as she's definitely got the skill and gadgets necessary to do some damage. I am, however, willing to admit potential danger in a team so stacked (3 of 5, by my count) with moody selfish types who are likely to go off and do their own thing just for the fun of it.

Also, as indicated by the dates, this pick is being made completely independent of that joke of a film from 2005.

I'd make it 1991-1992, because it started to suck even when they went to the half hour episodes. ;)

Meh... that's certainly when the pretension meter started to go through the roof, but I still have a fond sense of nostalgic affection for the longer episodes.

If I were forced to choose only one of Aeon's incarnations, however, there's no question I'd go for the version from the shorts.

How can it be a joke??? It had Charlize Theron in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For the love of humanity, just google it and go to images...

With this selection, I am picking the hero with the greatest single power off all time... I select Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie
174926__jeannie_l.jpg

Instead of Major Nelson picking up the bottle, on my team, Reed Richards picks it up...
reedv.jpg

and guess what? An unstoppable super force was formed... did I mention they are housed inside the indestructable Voltron with the Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter? Face it evil doers, you are finished. Also, my tropical island just got a +100 for fun and good times.

So what powers does Jeannie have? Unlimited... Can grant whatever wish Reed Richards wants plus, unlike other Genies, she can grant whatever wish she wants.... can she imbue my team with Infinity Guantlets? Yup... Can she blink your lame wizard from middle earth to the center of the sun? Sure can. Can she transform Galactus or similar supposedly omnipotent beings into feeder mice in a snake tank and strip them of all their powers? If she wants to. Can she do all of this in a blink of an eye with style, a giggle, then throw a party with shrimp cocktail and mixed drinks? Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!

So what is the last thing your supervillain team will see before they are destroyed?

I don't know if my next pick will be acceptable, but I'll post some background on it and hopefully it will.

Back in 1996 When I was 11 before I got entirely into basketball my grandpa used to take me to the comic book store every other week. He was the main reason why I got into comics. This is where I bought my last series of comics I entirely purchased, DC VS Marvel. Marvel won if you wanted to know as voted by the fans, but in the comics themselves it was a tie.

At some point the companies decided to created an alternate comic universe and called it Amalgam Comics, creating combinations of their character and even referencing the comics to have history going back to the 1950's. They published and wrote the comics for a couple weeks as if they were always this way.

My next pick comes from those comics:

1-1.jpg

Dark Claw is Marvel comics Wolverine and DC comics Batman. He is a part of Amalgam Comics which is labeled Earth-9602.

Yeah, I can see why you thought that might not be allowed. Dark Claw is purely a combination of two heroes rather than a uniquly individual hero. That might fall under the "a hero can only be picked once" rule. I don't know though, might need a commish ruling.

Imaginative pick either way.

I would be a little more concerned, as a GM, if it were a more powerful hero combination... but as is... meh.
