So you want the Kings to get a backup center, OK who?

On the Shamsports web page there is a little section on cap holds. According to that web page the Kings still have several cap holds that take them over the salary cap. It is sort of interesting who is listed under the Kings. The Kings have the option of waiving all of them to get under the cap, but according to the explanation given there, these cap holds do have potential benefits.

The cap holds are basicly immaterial. They can be done away with by the Kings just releasing their rights to those players. Or having the player sign with another team. There was one site that still showed a cap hold for the Kings with Diogu. I think thats where some of the disparity is coming from. Also some of the sites may not have been updated recently. Such as the NBA's own freeagent list that shows who has been signed and who hasn't.

Cap Holds can be eliminate at any time by simply releasing the player. It's the same with Exemptions (MLE, Bi-Annual, & Traded Player). The league adds the value of the exemptions ($5M, $2M, & the value of traded player if any) to the teams actual salary before deciding if the team is over the cap.

The Kings salary is $54M + $5M MLE + $2M Bi-annual + $.442M (Bobby Brown traded player) for a total of $61.442M. So, officially we are over the cap. But, if the Kings renounce the Exemptions (which means they can't sign anone if it means going over the cap), then the exemptions aren't counted and only the actual salary is.

All it takes is a phone call.

It’s too bad we let go of Mikki because we could have traded him to the Warriors for Randolph. I guess I shouldn't think that the Warriors would have been that dumb.

As far as I know, Ely hasn't been given a guaranteed contract yet.

That's what I thought. But the way some people were talking I thought that we gave him a guaranteed contract. Happy to hear it's not true.

Yeah, you really shouldn't. If they were THAT dumb, we'd just trade 'em May or Ely for Randolph.

Right now Randolph is a nice bright spot for the Warriors so I couldn’t imagine them doing that, but last year was another story.

Hmmm. Maybe.

They had kind of bad timing, though, and started appreciating Randolph a little before the trade deadline. A few days before it, he started for them against the Lakers, and put in a nice 14-12-2blk effort. Eight days prior, he'd gone 12-7-2blk in 14 minutes. I think they started taking him seriously just a bit too soon. But, maybe.

Not sure who the filler would have been, but not much point in worrying about it now.

Speaking of the Clips, what would it take to pry Kaman? They don't seem to be particularly high on him, but I think he'd make a mean three big man rotation with Shock & Hawes.

Camby's an ender, and at his age, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he plans on retiring. Skinner's also creaky, and an ender. That leaves them, next year, with Caveman and DeAndre Jordan as their only centers.

They could use a SG, but I think it's a real stretch.

Great minds think alike. I agree with you, after this year all they'll have is Kaman and DeAndre Jordan. I would love to have Kaman but I doubt they would part with him at this part. Joel Przybilla is an unrestricted free agent next summer, as is Travis Outlaw. I know Oden is their center of the future, but I would assume they would want to resign Przybilla as insurance for Oden. Of course that all depends on how much money he wants.

You're right, it's done and over...I don't know why I thought about it.

we should try and trade for Deandre Jordan.
Yea hes raw.. but hes really young and an athletic freak. Hes having a great pre-season too. 13 ppg 6 rebs, 1.1 blks all in 20 mins. The clippers are loaded with big guys too (kaman griffin skinner camby)..

just an idea

There is a report that the Jazz are having to think pretty hard on whether or not to even pick up Kosta Koufos' option next year, so apparently they aren't that excited about him. He seems like he would be a good young guy to try out.

And he would address NONE of the issues that we have. He is a very poor man's Hawes

I'm not saying he would come in and change the complexion of the team or anything, but he's young and he's big, he looks to be able to be had at a bargain, and we are in a position to offer him playing time in a role that as of now looks to be filled by Melvin Ely and Sean May. I don't really see the downside. If he can come in and play well he will have value around the league, any halfway decent 7 footer will, and if his style doesn't fit the team or we find someone better to be backup center, then we move him. If he doesn't play well, he's on his rookie deal for this year and two more, so he's not dragging down the cap or anything. I think its worth a shot, especially considering what we're working with now.

There's absolutely no way we can pry away a 20 year old 7-foot center who makes <$1mil and actually shows freak athleticism on both ends of the court. If we can get anyone on that roster, it's probably Chris Kaman. Super fat contract and recently injuries have gotten the better of him, but that's part of the reason why he's expendable...look at it the glass half full, and I see that he's a 7-footer who's only two years removed from 15-13-3, which are sickly numbers for a starting center; those numbers combined with his age supersede the concerns. I'd like to think Camby is expendable as an expiring contract, but I think the Clips do value him more as a veteran presence and is game jibes better with Griffin's, and they won't trade him unless they get an offer they can't refuse (probably involves trading Kevin Martin).

Well my confession here is I can't find a back up center I think the Kings could get that would help the team:confused: The Kings had Mikki Moore, Sheldon Williams and Ike Diogu. Those guys were jettisoned for various reasons. So unless Petrie can find the next Scot Pollard lurking out there it looks like JT is the back up C.

I think most people came to the same conclusion. With the release of Ely today the Kings are down to 14 players assuming that Mason stays.

I can't see GP adding any undrafted college player or someone out of Europe or the D-League. The most likely senario is that they continue to try and get by with Hawes and JT getting the majority of the minutes. Besides being the cheapest option, it also accelerates their development with Major PT.

The next option is that if we can finish the season without any major injuries in the front court, that we look to the next draft for our 3rd Big. I can't see a trade. There just aren't that many teams that have a excess in bigs. And, we don't have that much talent that we can afford to trade away any of our young guns.

If someone approaches GP with a deal for a big that involves Noc, Beno, or Thomas, then yes. Otherwise, we wait and see what we get in the draft, and what we can get with the Cap Space we end up with. Whatever that amount ends up being.

I've been watching which bigs have been waived by other teams over the last several days, because there's always a pile of 'em at this time of year.

It's not looking good.

Michael Sweetney or Goran Suton, anyone? I'm afraid they're the picks of the litter.

I would love it if Joel Pryzbilla is our big free agent siging next year. Pryzbilla, Thompson, Casspi, Martin, Evans would be tough.

I don't mind the idea of Jake Diesel coming to town. He's not afraid to lay someone out coming to the hole and making them earn it at the line.

WOW... Voskuhl and Collins didn't make my list because they're really no better than Mel Ely.

I guess our petition to Stern to let KT play in platform shoes got turned down.
