Yeah the defense really stepped it up today and looked much better than the pre-season.
The o-line needs to get in sync next week if we are to get the running game going.

And I don't have a problem with any of the "conservative" play this early in the season. They have to learn to walk before they can samba.

Aside from two or three throws, Hill looked horrible, in my opinion. I liked the touchdown throw... textbook, from the shoulder fake to the way he kept two hands on the ball and didn't pat it before he threw it downfield, to the perfect delivery. Too bad that was the only play where he looked like a true NFL quarterback.
Small tangent: How come all but two or three NFL quarterbacks pat the football almost every time they throw it? It drives me insane. Not only are you slowing down your delivery, you're telling the defense that you're getting ready to throw the ball (so, double advantage to the defense), and making a routine post route a suicide squeeze in between three defenders, and even if the ball does get there, your receiver is getting murderated and has no chance to gain yards after the catch. So, small amateur tip to quarterbacks all over the country: STOP PATTING THE DAMN BALL!!!

By the way, "happy with Hill's performance" is relative to my expectations. 
His long passes had more zip than I'm used to seeing (including the nice throw to Bruce). He also did well on the touchdown drive. I'd love to have more from a quarterback but at this point that's enough for me if the running game can produce.

Once again-I'm THRILLED that the 49ers won!
BUT, the 49ers had 21net yards rushing........ That is the strength of the team. Five of six possesssions were three and outs in the second half.
I hope they figure it out because the 49ers will be on the losing end of a lot of 10-3 games if they don't....

wow supe, how can you say hill looked horrible? He had over 2 hundred yards, no int and no fumbles and when actually given the chance to throw(13 times on the winning drive) he delivered and completed 9 of those passes. It's not his fault raye was calling the plays the way he was. I think you're being way out of line here.
Did you watch the whole game? He didn't look capable of hitting anyone for stretches at a time. On the TD pass to Gore, he missed him on that same route the previous two plays. Well designed pass play for the score, but Hill can't check down to the flat to save his life; the score was designed to get Gore in the flat, and whether they were playing man (which they were) or zone (which would have taken the flat away), Hill was gonna throw the ball to Gore in the flat. Had they played zone on the back side, it would have been six the other way.
I have nothing against the guy, but the few times I've watched him, he doesn't seem like he has the ability to lead his team to wins. If not for Arizona playing as sloppy as they did (turnovers, penalties) and the Niner defense being suffocatingly good, I don't think you guys win that one yesterday. Huge win, division rivalry, on the road, and maybe Hill will play better at home and make me eat my words. But I was extremely disappointed with his performance yesterday, save for a couple of throws.

but what are you expecting from him? That's the thing, I already know hill is not going to play lights out. But he manages the game. I don't expect anything stellar from him. I just don't want turnovers. Look what happened with JTO last year. He had a gun of an arm and could make almost all the throws. But he turned the ball over so much we called him Just Turn Overs. I'm not sold on hill either and I would love for someone to come in here and take over if we ever want to win the superbowl. Whether that be from free agency, next years draft, or if Nate Davis could be that guy. Davis would be ideal for me cause we could then use the 2 first rounders next year on a pass rusher and a right tackle.
All in all I'm just saying hill is not that bad. He may be ugly but most of the time he gets the job done. I mean look at cutler last night, he had 4 int's and at least 2 were thrown right at the defense. And look at how much it cost Chicago to get him.

I know that the key word in that sentence is probably "lead" but Hill has lead his team to victory better than any 49ers quarterback in years. I'm not a huge fan of his, and I admit that I don't see them winning the Super Bowl with him under center, but so far the one thing he is doing right is leading his team to wins.
If you could have Jay Cutler (minus the bad attitude) instead of Shaun Hill, would you take that trade? I'm pretty sure most Niner fans would.
My point about him is that he was indecisive, he couldn't go through his reads, he threw a lot of ugly balls. It was ugly. I know he's not Joe Montana, and I don't expect him to be a Pro Bowler anytime soon, but didn't do the basic things adequately enough in my opinion. If you're going to compare him to JT O'Sullivan, then you're just happy he's not throwing interceptions all over the field. And that's fine, but it's not enough to be a good team. The NFL is more and more becoming a pass-centric league, and if you're quarterback can't check down to the wide open running back in the flat, then you're not going to score enough points to win most games.
Now, I will say this, and I think it could be said in defense of Alex Smith also: The Niners have screwed their offensive players for five years now. New coordinators, new coaches, seems like every season there's turnover on that staff. When you have a young quarterback, how can he grow into a consistent and efficient player when he's learning a new playbook every eight months? Now that you have some stability, hopefully, with Singletary and Jimmy Raye, maybe we'll see some growth with your quarterback. But having seven different coordinators in seven seasons is disastrous. Can't grow as a team that way.
If Shaun Hill works on a couple of fundamental elements of quarterbacking and gets more familiar with the playbook, then he could be okay. But he looked like one of the worst starters in the NFL Sunday.
Shaun Hill isn't the next Joe Montana but he's head and shoulders above the last few starting QBs for the Niners. He didn't do anything stupid, which is a big improvement IMHO and I think he's going to be able to at least not embarrass us too badly until we can get a upgrade for him.
I have to agree with est.1999 in that I think you're being way too harsh, especially considering how few expectations people have had for him.

Bottom line for me is Shaun Hill has an 8-3 record as a starter for this team. Now 11 games might not be a large enough sample to get all crazy about, but I will sure as hell take that over what we have on the bench.
Our D will be good enough to keep us in most games this year. My hope is the offense will gain some sort of continuity and consistency as the season progresses.

I never had any expectations for him. I just think he's a bad quarterback. I recognize his virtue being that he doesn't turn the ball over like other guys the Niners have had, but he's not good. From someone on the outside looking in, he's what's holding your team back. If I'm wrong, I'll own up to it, so if he gets comfortable after a couple years under Raye's system and turns into a serviceable passer, feel free to call me out. But judging from what I've seen, he doesn't have it.

Could the Gore of a few years ago be back? Very encouraging. Yeah, its only game 2 and we've yet to play out of division, but I like it..I like it alot.

First and foremost, I hope Matt H. is okay. I hate to see anyone in obvious pain like that...and the Seahawks are my son-in-law's favorite team. The rivalry was looking to be fun this year and I don't want to see it marred in any way...

More than anything else, though, I'm seeing the difference it makes when you have a coach who makes it clear from day one what he expects. Nice job by Singletary and Co. Gore's runs were fantastic and the D was solid.
Hill reminds me so much of Dilfer.... Just enough to not screw it up, but nothing to get excited about. I sure don't miss a bunch of crappy interceptions that's for sure.

Last time AP was held to 2 rushing yards by Willis and co...it will be very tough!

If Frank Gore is able to run wild all season long, it will make life much easier for Shaun Hill and the NFC West will be an interesting division all year. I think 10-6 wins the West, and the Niners are already one game ahead. With that defense and that running game, the race to 10 could very well be won by San Francisco. That would be fun to see.

I went to the game yesterday and it was awesome!
A few thoughts...
Our offense was actually kinda stagnant. Take out the 2 long runs by Gore and his avg per carry was terrible. Shaun Hill looked ok on 2 of our drives throwing the ball. Our first possession he hit VD 3 times, then struggled against the Seattle D in the red zone, and really didn't go back to Davis the rest of the game. Had a couple overthrows, most notably the 30 yarder on 3rd and long to Isaac Bruce. Held the ball too long and led to a fumble which we recovered, but lost 17 yards in the process.
Defense was very very good. Nate Clements was incredible. Shutting down Houshmandzadeh several times 1 on 1 and coming over to make big tackles quite a few times. Someone missed their assignment on Julius Jones in the flat on Wallace's TD pass. I didn't see who it was. Similar play we ran last week against Arizona. Probably was Michael Lewis' man.
We didn't get to the QB as much as we did against Warner, which was odd considering all the injuries Seattle had to their O-line.
Offensive line was ok. Left side was solid. Snyder and Rachal, and Pashos need to play better on the right side.
Overall, I'd give us a 7 out of 10. Offense is going to have to play a lot better to beat Minnesota, but our defense should be able to do well against Peterson and the run game.

There's still a long way to go, but wins are better than losses. The team had similar starts in the last few years, but we'll have to wait and see how they do against non-division opponents.
Other than the offense looking more like it did in 2006 than 2008 thanks to Raye instead of Martz, I don't see that much difference between the results with Singletary and what happened with Nolan. At the same time I do think they can be.

I'm still waiting to cast judgement on Jimmy Raye's offense. He called the Tazer (wildcat in 49er terms) formation a couple times on 3rd and long and it didnt work out at all. Michael Spurlock looked lost, overthrowing Vernon Davis by at least 5 yards. I think we should jettison that formation out of the playbook, or at least get a competent player with some throwing ability. Battle or Robinson immediately come to mind.
I also think we should run more plays for Josh Morgan. Seattle didn't bother to double him at all but Hill never even looked in his direction, preferring Bruce and Davis, or a running back. This should be a breakout year for Morgan. I want to see him get more involved.
