(Revised poll) Include Hawes or Thompson for Rubio?

VF, can you clear the current votes on the poll too. I already voted for JT, cause I would do him over Hawes, but now that the poll is revised want to vote for "neither."

I said I would probably do a Hawes and the #4 for Rondo, but definitely not for Rubio. There are several reasons for that--first of all, it's more than within the realm of possibility that Rubio will fall to the 4th slot (and he seems to be pushing that way too), so on that basis alone, even if Rubio ends up being drafted at #2 or #3, it's not worth giving up any of our productive young players for him. Second, we can't bank fully on Rubio's potential--he's a passing whiz and has a knack for anticipating and seeing plays faster than most veterans, and on that basis alone he'll be special in some way, but he hasn't translated that onto an NBA court the way Rondo has done yet. While it's important to take risks and really jump on players we like, the difference between the #4th and the #2nd talentwise is not terribly steep, and a useful role player alongside our #4th pick should get it done instead.

I changed this poll once to add neither but immediately changed my mind just because it was obvious that the poll would result in nearly 100% "neither". Which come to htink about it actually makes the whole thread kind of pointless, but as long as the thread is pointless I figured might as well have a pointless poll to go with it.

Brick, I am actually a little surprised that your answer is neither. You have always advocated swinging for the fences to land a superstar since you need one to win it all. Since Rubio has superstar potential and JT does not, I was mildly shocked you would not support a trade like this.
Maybe because although Rubio has talent, he also has some serious holes in his game. While Rubio could be a superstar, so could Harden, Evans and Jennings, all who are obtainable at pick #4.

That's my guess. But I am just curious, because Brick seems to be more vocal and willing to blatantly tank and take big risks to get that superstar. I'll be curious to hear his take, although I expect it to be what you are saying.
I don't think Brickie said he voted neither. I think he was saying that, as a mod, he was going to put "neither" as an option for the poll but decided against it.

i love rubio and all but no way.
If I'm building a team with Rubio as my PG and looking to maximize his abilities I'd want to have bigs that run the floor well, have good hands and a high basketball IQ. And obviously it would be nice if they were young and could grow with Rubio.
Hawes and Thompson would compliment Rubio extremely well. So to me trading one of them to land him is a huge mistake.
Geoff has a second first round pick, Kenny's expiring contract and a few other movable pieces to get a deal done. But I'm far from convinced that Rubio is a surefire future star and worth mortgaging the farm for. But considering Geoff NEVER trades up, it would be a huge indication of his affinity for Rubio if he did.

To the question of whether I would answer neither...yes I probably would. I like Rubio, have long tagged him as one of the two guys (along with Thabeet) with a special talent I would like to get out of this draft. But all this hype...too much given what I haven't seen. I am not a believer at that level. He could be really good. Or he might end up another Goran Dragic. And I consider those two young bigs, not Kevin, to be the two most valuable pieces this franchise currently has. So I think my answer would be neither. I'd do what it takes to get him here with almost anything but those two. But jsut ripping up a fontline we finally got young patches over to get a PG who may or may not be the best PG in an incredibly deep PG draft...no, I don't think I do that. I just do not believe that deeply without having seen more.

Here's a question. Thompson and Hawes did not fill seats up at Arco last season. Would you trade Thompson or Hawes up and draft Rubio just to fill the arena up??
Thompson and Hawes aren't the reason the arena wasn't filled last year. They, ALONG WITH RUBIO, could go a long way towards filling it this season. Trading one of them would be like selling your hair to buy a watch fob while your boyfriend sells his watch to buy you hair combs.
In this draft? Hell no. There seem to be other point guards available who may be as good, or just a little behind Rubio. I wouldn't take two steps back, just to take one step forward.

But if push came to shove, I'd move JT over Hawes, only because Hawes position is more difficult to fill, but I'd hate myself in the morning. Hopefully we'll end up with all three. Move anyone else but those two, please.

Ultimately, winning is what fills up the arena. Personality can do it in the short term. But if it doesn't eventually turn into wins, the arena will soon be empty again. Its unfortunate that we live in a disposable society. No one has any patience. Its feed me now Seymour, feed me now. We finally have two young bigs that show promise, and all everyone can think of is how to turn them in for the latest model. Sight unseen.
I think the poll shows the opposite is true, bajaden, since the number of people who WOULDN'T trade either Hawes or Thompson to secure Rubio far exceeds those who can only "think of how to turn them in for the latest model."
And it's not just about winning. It's about seeing a competitive team on the floor, with players who give their all. Yes, winning is much more fun to watch than losing but seeing a good game is much better than watching a bunch of malcontents giving a half-arsed attempt on the nights when they feel like it.

Really? I'd give up Thompson and #4 for Griffin to be honest. Then I'd live through another terrible season and pray for John Wall next year.

And in each of those trades you are downgrading in talent. Maybe you say its a wash with Thabeet because he brings other things to the table that Spencer doesn't (rebounding, defence, shot-blocking) but Mullens is a huge risk.
Jordan Hill is the second beft PF prospect in the draft but he is not good enough to tie Thompson's bootlaces.
While I am a big Rubio fan, I don't think you trade your young bigs for him. Two positions (C and PF) which are hardest to fill. We got 2 young bigs who play well together (they have their flaws but just about everyone does). They have length. Spencer has a genuine post game that is golden on any team and you need one if you are to contend.
Rubio is the best PG in the draft but in a PG deep draft, is he worth losing Spencer or JT?! I would say no. Rubio is a better player than Flynn but I would rather have a Flynn or Evans / JT / Hawes trio going forward than any combinations of Thabeet or Mullens / JT / Rubio or Hawes / Hill / Rubio.
If we can get Rubio with the 4th pick, brilliant. If we can get him by trading 4 and 23, great but if we have to lose JT or Hawes to get Rubio, I say no thanks. Rubio is good but he is no franchise player.
