Randy Youngman targeting articles at Kings fans now to tell us not to celebrate

Maybe Youngman is just angry because he spoke about how he did think the team was going to Ahaheim this year, but now he's wrong, so maybe it's an ego thing, I don't kow....

Youngman is the epitome of the elitist L.A. fan.

Why would anyone stay in Sacramento if they could be in L.A., everything's better there, there's more money there, blah, blah, blah. In his view Sacramento only gets to keep the team due to the Commissioner and the Lakers throwing monkey wrenches into the process.

What people like Youngman don't realize is that the NBA and other pro sports leagues will not thrive in the long run if teams are consolidated in major media markets and are not distributed regionally. It creates rivalries, it encourages people to drive across their town to go to games, etc.

From the article:

It was only a few days ago that George Maloof defiantly declared, "We're going to Anaheim!" during a conference call with the NBA relocation committee. Yes, Stern was on the line, too.

Shortly after the conference call, Stern had a private phone conversation with George Maloof that nobody will talk about, apparently resulting in a disagreement between George, Joe and Gavin on whether the family should file by Monday's relocation deadline.

Sounds like Stern told George not to poke the bear.

Its very hard to take anything this guy says at face value, but this was the most interesting section fo the article, and it seems to reinforce what we have been seeing -- George Maloof, desperate casino chieftain of the Maloof family, is NOT our friend in this. He does not have the attachment that Joe and Gavin do to the Sacto area, and he may have been the most virulent of the Maloofs about moving the team...for his own end of the business.

If you want to take speculation to unfounded heights, you could even interpret some of the contradictory reports leaking out about the Maloofs meeting wiht attorneys, or not, etc. as different brothers having different ideas and acting on their own.

Didn't Joe say George is leading the arena side for them now?

Ack if true.

What I am optimistic about is the NBA having their finger prints all over this as well so any wrong doing or posturing by George will be put back in its place very quickly. Now that KJ has an open line to the other owners and the NBA, there is no where near as much leeway for the Maloofs to play silly buggers as there was in the past.

If George comes in with ridiculous demands, he will be sent to the corner pretty quickly.

Yep, George is going to work with the Mayor and the NBA on the arena side while Joe and Gavin Focus on the team and marketing with the NBA and Geoff Petrie.

But with the NBA involved, Im not too worried about it. George is smart, I guess .. at least thats what I hear. If Sacramento puts a good offer in place that will make the Maloofs money, he'll take it.

Stern was pretty clear about it though on the conference call. The NBA will be involved, the Maloofs promised to be involved and helpful ... everyone is on the same page right now, and if things start to get messy it looks like the NBA will make sure the Maloofs dont try and do anything sketchy.

The NBA wants Ron Burkle. Ron Burkle wants the Kings in Sac. If the Maloofs ruin this somehow, Im willing to bet KJ and the NBA will use Burkle against the Maloofs.

I still love that Ron Burkle play by KJ, even if he has no route in unless the Maloofs relent. Just such an out of nowhere gamechanger, shook everyone up from Stern to the Maloofs.

Agreed.

It's a little mind blowing how many political points KJ is scoring right now... connections with Burkle....??? Hello.

But yeah it was funny... how rattled the Maloofs looked, and still sound, at Burkle's presence... and how perked up Stern appeared, and has appeared, ever since the Burkle bomb.

I think he is just significantly changing the landscape and equation. He's essentially allowing Stern to act with much greater power and risk, knowing there is an eager billionaire to

1. help finance an arena to look like the good guy/savior

2. buy the team should it get that far

3. work in the background to squeeze out the maloofs should the become unruly

4. scare Samueli

Can you or anyone ever recall the NBA sending in their best men to help run a franchise? At least not without buying the team out. I would guess the Maloof boys were a whisker away from seeing what happens when you poke the bear. They are on a short leash and the proud and emotional family better heel or they will find out what the bear can do.

Given the over the top angry response from the brothers towards Burkle. I would say that dart hit the target dead center. Even Stern glowed on about how KJ responded in the BOG meeting and after.

Randy Youngman is a jerk and a biased writer. He just figures, well if we cant take their team, then I can still taunt their fans! What an ***.

The funny thing was he seemed totally different on Grant's show than he does in his articles. he sounded like a fairly cool and reasonable guy on the radio.
