who the hell is offering HB a contract in the late teens in the year 2023?
I think us fans are still thinking of every NBA player over 30 as a running back who is in major decline. 31 is not old by NBA player standards anymore. James Hardees is going to get max money. Dame is a 60 mil dollar a year player soon. Barnes has a crash test dummy body and is essentially the same player he was the last few years. I’d be shocked if signs with us or anyone else for less than 18.

Something is going on here. There's no chance there wasn't a full MLE offer on the table for him. And he hasn't made a ton of money in his career for a guy his caliber; 33 mil in career earnings. He's either the RJ Barrett replacement in NYK and they'll work an extension or he's going to Philly and working an extension there.

This is sounding like one of those decline a cheap option and lock him up early kind of things. I doubt Jones actually hits the market.
On the other hand, they will have to make him an RFA, and he will be "on the market". Arenas provision is going to apply, so Pels can match with Early Bird rights. Still, somebody needs to go at Jones with the max deal he can be offered so the Pels don't get a discount. Jones at the MLE will push them into the apron, and go a good way in pushing them towards the second apron. Make it hurt. We may not get him, but make it hurt.

any idea why they would open themselves up like this? Hoping no one comes at Herb with a big deal this off-season?

Need to see what their cap sheet would look like if someone blasted the full 4/53 deal at him.

Can Herb shoot?

Or is he abysmal.

If so just throw that 4/53 his way and call it a day.

That'd be a big get I think

Herb is OK shooting, but not a 3 specialist by any stretch. but 4/53 he better be like your Bruce Brown last piece and he hasn't proven that yet. I think a contract like that for someone that could be a lot closer to overpaying for someone that might top out at a bit above Moe Harkless.

Oh Herb's last 2 seasons have been far better than anything Harkless has done. Herb is a special special defender. Living on all-defensive teams every year type of good. It's incredibly hard to be a good defender as a rookie/young player, but he's been one of the few outliers that's been elite since he stepped on an NBA floor.

And offensively he's got enough and a few intriguing traits that he can still continue to develop on. Some reasonable playmaking, gets to the FT line a good amount for his USG, shoots well from the FT line.

I'd be ok if we pay more than 4/53. If it's the price, basically the MLE, Pelicans are going to keep him. I would rise it to 19-22 M range. He will be overpayed but he is really good at the defense and serviciable in ofense. Also he is still young and this would be only his 3rd year, he can still growing. Not the best shooter but he isn't a zero in the ofensive end as Thybulle could be.

Could the Pelicans match 20M/year? They have Zion, CJ, Ingram, Valanciunas, Nance... I don't know if they can. Next year they're going to have to pay Murphy and their two last lottery picks, Dayson Daniels and Jordan Hawkins are SG and going to need minutes for develope. Maybe there is an option to sign him and have our OG without giving any piece.

And if they match it, we at least put a direct rival in a hard financial situation.

I think you're underrating that few year stretch that Harkless had in roughly the same role.

I think it's a no brainer to make him a big offer but NOP would have 48 hours to match which would probably cost us a shot at anyone else worth signing. Perhaps that is their thinking here?

Well, he worth the wait I think. He should be a DPOY candidate for the next 5 years. We have our core already formed, Herb should be the player who solves our major weakness, help us to improve the team defense and made us a contender. If finally he stays in New Orleans we still can go for some good role players who will be still in the market as could be Keita Bates-Diop or Taurean Prince and I still would be fine for being aggresive and try to go for the player that would made us better.

Percentages aren't numbers?
$20 million 4 years ago is not the same percentage of the cap as $20 million this year.

When Harrison signed his current deal, the cap was probably around $92 million. He signed for somewhere in vicinity of $20m per season. $20m this time around is lesser percentage of the cap than it was 4 years ago.

Harrison will most likely get a deal somewhere in the vicinity of $18-22m per season.

Some of those RFAs would be really good fits here but I highly doubt Monte will even consider RFAs as he doesn't want his cap space to be held up for 48 hours as its limits his ability to get someone else if the other team matches the offer.

I think we will be going after UFAs for that reason even though some of those players like Cam Johnson and PJ Washington would fit this team really really well.

Local media is prepping us for a Barnes/Sabonis re-up.
It could happen, but local media is just guessing like us. The idea that these guys are connected is laughable, except maybe Dave. Ham has occupied every bit of territory possible. The guy will be right if only because he has predicted everything, or his predictions are so vague as to be open to interpretation
