Wolves' Brewer to miss remainder of season with knee injury

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Rodney Carney watched Minnesota Timberwolves teammate Corey Brewer crash to the floor Saturday against Denver, but thought nothing of it.
"He always falls like that in practice and gets up," Carney said. "He walked off. I thought it was an ankle. He came back, but his knee buckled again. I knew it was something bad, but not that bad."
The Timberwolves found out just how bad on Monday, when an MRI revealed Brewer tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He will miss the rest of the season.
Brewer will undergo surgery soon, although a date had not been set. His injury leaves the struggling Timberwolves without their top defender, who had worked throughout the offseason to improve his shooting following a subpar rookie year.

HOUSTON -- Rockets star Tracy McGrady is expected to be out at least a week and his playing time will be restricted when he returns while he struggles with soreness in his left knee stemming from offseason surgery.

McGrady, who has missed the last three games, was evaluated by Dr. James Andrews on Monday. McGrady will continue a rehabilitation program to help alleviate the soreness in his knee.
The Rockets also will be without Brent Barry for a while as he recovers from a small muscle tear in his right leg. Barry has missed the last two games and will rest for two weeks before returning to practice.
Houston plays the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

New York -- Stephon Marbury was sent into limbo Monday, told to stay away from the New York Knicks until they can determine a way to get rid of him.
Marbury was not satisfied with the buyout offer put forward by Knicks president Donnie Walsh and spent only 15 minutes discussing his situation. His attorney, Hal Biagas, spent another 20 minutes with Walsh before leaving and telling reporters no resolution had been reached.

McGrady sat out Houston's last three games after starting the first 15. He had arthroscopic surgery on May 6 but said Tuesday that doctors have told him that the knee is not healed.
"Obviously, I came back a little bit too early," said McGrady, who was averaging 15.6 points. "I'm just not ready."

With Cuttino Mobley still not in uniform following his trade to the New York Knicks, the New York Post has made reference to the possibility of Mobley filing papers for a medical retirement today because of a heart condition. The move appears to be bizarre considering the condition was detected when Mobley was with the Houston Rockets, and he has played without problems with the Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings and L.A. Clippers since then.
Mobley was averaging 33 minutes and 14 points a game this season before the the trade.
Allan Houston and Patrick Ewing Jr. are the two likeliest candidates to take Mobley's roster spot.

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP)—Former NBA player Corie Blount was charged with felony drug possession after authorities saw him pick up a package they knew contained marijuana, then found more marijuana at his home, the Butler County sheriff said Friday.

Deputies watched as the U.S. Postal Service delivered a package containing 11 pounds of marijuana to a Liberty Township address northwest of Cincinnati on Thursday.

When the 39-year-old Blount picked up the package, agents followed him to his home and served search warrants on the home and the address where the package was delivered, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said.

At Blount’s home, deputies found a second 11-pound package of marijuana, and another package containing about 7 pounds of marijuana, Jones said.

Clutchfans.net (Rockets forum) is all over the issue of Tracy McGrady as BIG TIME trade bait. Rumors are Houston will unload him for almost "anything" that dumps his salary and returns something of value. Tons of suggestions, some outlandish - some intriguing. One fan actually said they wondered if Sacramento (from who they "stole Artest") would entertain straight up Kevin Martin and Kenny Thomas (a former Rocket) for TMac. I SERIOUSLY doubt it but... it would allow the oft injured super star to perhaps split time with Francisco Garcia at 2 guard.

The Knicks acquired the 11-year veteran last month from the Los Angeles Clippers. He never played for the Knicks after his physical exam and subsequent visits with specialists showed his condition was worse than previously thought.

Artest, Houston's second-leading scorer, sat out Monday's loss in Memphis, the first game he'd missed this season. He had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed damaged ligaments in the ankle, an old injury that Artest re-aggravated in a game last month.
The Rockets play at Golden State on Friday and visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday.

Mobley announced his decision at a press conference at the Knicks’ training center, where he confirmed he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The condition causes the heart muscle to thicken, making it harder to pump blood, and the 33-year-old Mobley said he had no choice but to end his career.... More...
 
Best wishes to Mobley. Hope he leads a long life after basketball. It's good he stopped playing. We don't need to see someone die on the court.
 
I saw this too in various news sources.
I really liked Cat when he was playing for the Kings. He managed to produce decent numbers and I was sad to see him leave.

Looking back at history, I was also sad to see Doug Christie leave in the trade that brought the Cat to Sac. The Kings came out on top of this trade, but then the Cat left to free agency.

Good luck in whatever you do and hopefully you will have many happy days
 
I wish all the best to Mobley and his family. He certainly did the right thing for himself and his loved ones.
 
G. Wallace's Father Dies

I didn't see anyone else mention this yet (apologies if I missed it) but Gerald Wallace lost both his grandmother and his father within the past week. I thought something like that warranted a mention. I'm about the same age as Gerald, and I can imagine how tough that would be for me. Especially if I couldn't be there because of other obligations.
 
Around the league - games, musings, etc.

Anyone watching the Celtics at the Hawks right now. 3rd quarter is really intense, players smacking each other around and hitting the ground on every play. The atmosphere is like a playoff game. I miss having a good team to watch.

If this thread isn't necessary maybe a mod can merge it with the 'injuries' thread.
 
Bibby almost hit the 3 to tie that game with .07 left.

CP3 set the new record for consecutive steals, at now at 106 games. Paul knocked the ball away and Butler almost got it but he held his hands back and the record was set with that awkward play.
 
Its less that Chris Paul is on track to be the great PG of all time than it is that the current group of rising NBA stars is on track to be far-away the best group of players the NBA has ever seen, ever, ever.

Yup,this group has the potential to be that, though it is quite a small group, unlike the 80s and 90s era where you have multiple players in all position who were truly great NBA players.
