NFL Talk

I'm on record on the subject and in no mood to rehash the argument (though I was glad Mussburger said something besides scary steroids bad)... but regardless of my feelings I still take delight in making fun of Merriman for getting caught.

BSF* really helped me to understand and even embrace some viewpoints I had not considered, so it's not about big bad steroids and all that, but the fact remains that we're talking about illegal, black market drugs. Things may change from a legal standpoint (for instance, California appears to be getting ready to legalize recreational marijuana; 90 years ago, alcoholic beverages were illegal; one day, steroids might be legal and widely used and distributed), and that might have an impact on professional sports and the use of performance enhancing drugs, but until then, I don't take a carefree attitude to players knowingly and blatantly violating the rules.

It's not that I have a cavalier attitude about their use so much as I think the use is widespread enough that it should be done under proper medical supervision and out in the open so that we can benefit beyond competitive athletics.

And then when people ask "Why do pro athletes make a bazillion dollars while my son's teacher only makes 35k?" I can say its because they are highly specialized lab rats and at least feel some justice is being done in the world. :)

What benefits do you mean, aside from competitive athletics? Are you talking about medical usage (impairments, recovery, etc.), or are you talking about recreational usage? Or are you talking about firefighters and police officers?

Mostly medical usage. I believe some of the biggest benefits of certain steroids that we know about are part of AIDS medicine cocktails but I'm not sure if there has been any long term testing done on people with healthy immune systems. Obviously short term use in the cases of rehab and recovery, all the designer steroids that athletes are using are probably better than what is presently mainstream. But hey, interesting idea there about firefighters and police officers.

Week 6 Picks:

MIA vs GB
SD vs STL
BAL vs NE
CLE vs PIT
KC vs HOU
DET vs NYG
ATL vs PHI
SEA vs CHI
NO vs TB
NYJ vs DEN
OAK vs SF
DAL vs MIN
IND vs WAS
TEN vs JAC

Upset pick for the week goes to the Redskins over the Colts. I am also picking San Fran, again...to finally get off that doughnut and win their first game against the Raiders without Gradkowski & D. McFadden. The Dallas/Minnesota game was tough to pick, but I gave the edge to the Vikings at home. I also have Baltimore beating New England at Gillette Stadium to break their consecutive home season record of I don't know how many games. Atlanta & Philly game is the one I am really looking forward to, I give the edge to Atlanta because they have been on fire lately, but it will be tough to do it at Philly, they haven't been playing too bad themselves. Lastly, the Jets vs Broncos could be a trap game for the Jets, Broncos can light it up, and they don't run very often. They also provide a decent defense, not as good without Elvis Dumervil, but still solid. I love this week's games, there are a lot of good looking games to check out, I look forward to an exciting Week 6 of NFL football!

That wraps it up for football Sunday. First off, the Redskins came up just short of beating the Colts, they had plenty of opportunities. McNabb had a shot at the end of the game to drive the Skins up the field for a touchdown or a field goal. Give credit to Francisco for that nice, one handed interception to seal the deal. I like what I see from Washington though, all their games have been close & competitive and that team looks like it can get into the playoffs.

Minnesota/Dallas game was entertaining for sure. Dallas stuffed the run all game long and they made Favre throw often, it worked in this game. Percy Harvin finally returned a touchdown this season which is always fun to watch, he is just a fast dude.

Houston was down 21-7 at home to the Chiefs, and right after KC scores, Houston answers back and make it a one touchdown game. From there, Houston goes and scores I believe 20 something points in the 4th quarter to come back from behind and win the game 35-31, a Schaub to Andre Johnson touchdown with 28 secs. left on the clock. Wow! What a game this was, what resilience from Houston to come back like that, we know they can score and boy did they do so. Only problem is, they have to outscore their opponents to win because obviously, they cannot stop anybody. It doesn't help that their pro-bowl linebacker Demeco Ryans is now out for the season, unfortunately. It's a shame, they have a nice running/passing game, if they had a decent defense to compliment that, just wow.

I give lots of credit to the Eagles for coming out and just spanking Atlanta from the get go, they go up 21-0 on them and never look back. Atlanta made an attempt to comeback but failed miserably. They didn't run the ball well at all either, which was surprising because they are ranked 3rd, I believe in rushing yards. Good job Philly defense, they stepped up BIG in this one. Kolb also had a very good game, 3 TD's, two of them to Desean Jackson.

Green Bay just looks all out of sync. They can't really score that much anymore, which is to be expected, their starting RB & TE are out for the year. Miami responded very well after that Monday Night beatdown against the Pats. Ya gotta love those OT games and Carpenter sealed Green Bay's fate with a 44 yard game winning field goal. Green Bay is in big trouble, they have WAY too many injuries, I don't know who is expected to come back and when, but keep an eye on them.

San Francisco finally won a game! They barely did so against Jason Campbell & no McFadden. A win is a win, none the less.

San Diego is looking pretty bad themselves. First losing to the Chiefs, then Seahawks, Raiders & now the Rams. I don't know what to say but it's very surprising to see them struggle to beat teams you normally expect them to beat. I can't imagine how that New England game is going to go next week.

Good win by the Patriots in OT to beat the Ravens. That was a good game as well. Baltimore's run game was pretty non-existant, Boldin wasn't too shabby as well as Deion Branch's return. New England is 4-1 and are looking quite impressive.

Those Jets just keep winning ball games, their defense hasn't been all that as you would expect, but they just put up points and make stops when they need to. Just another week at the office for those Jets, superbowl bound.

The Saints offense, atleast for this week, decided to show up and finally put up 30 points on those Buccanneers. I expected a much closer game, but so much for that.

The Giants are getting it together, they are sort of under the radar, but they won their last three games and they have been putting up some points. They can be scary down the stretch for opposing teams, if their run game gets going with Bradshaw/Jacobs and their pass rush comes along nicely, they will be something to mess with.

Big Bens return against Cleveland was a goodie. 3 TD's and one pick. That Pittsburgh defense did their job and they came out with a easy W. Them and the Jets are just dangerous and I hope I see a match up with those two teams in the near future.

I enjoyed this week of football, lots of close games & competitive. Which is what all those NFL fans want to see, one game remaining on the schedule and that's tomorrow night Titans & Jaguars. It doesn't scream to me that this will be a very competitive game, but that's why they play the game and you just never know.

Still not sure if we're on any kind of record setting pace or not but there was at least one kickoff returned for a TD again this week.

The interference call on the Broncos was legit but I think its still a lame way to settle a game.

This is starting to be the Year of the Injury in NFL. Packers decimated like no supposed Super Bowl caliber team I can recall. Houston now losing their all pro middle line backer is a huge blow. At this point, Indy holding it together despite lots of nagging injuries all over the place. Vick out, then Cobb back in for Philly. Saints holding it together so far in spite of huge injury problems. QBs beat up all over the league (plus WRs, etc.) with lots of concussions. Desean Jackson took a violent hit from Dunta Robinson that KOed both of them. Now latest report is Jackson suffered extreme concussion with memory loss - probably out for several weeks. Absoutely no favorite whatsoever in NFC (flavor of the week - last week - Atlanta flops this week) so it can be said - yes, 49ers are actually still in the hunt somehow by a thread. Of course, you might say same thing about Raiders who are still only one game out of first place in their division - but AFC has too many elite teams (Steelers, Ravens, Jets, Pats, Colts, maybe one or two others) for Oakland to be any kind of factor at the end.

I didn't get a chance to watch the Broncos game, what happened?
Jets scored go ahead TD with ~1 minute left after a 4th and long play was called PI at the goal line. It was PI, the receiver and defender got tangled up and the defenders hands wound up in the receivers face mask but it didn't look to be a blatant grab. I really think there needs to be a 15 yard PI that is the main call and only use the spot foul when it is blatant. In this case the ref thought about it for a few seconds then threw the flag. And it was a legit call, just not bad enough to essentially award the victory to the Jets.

Exactly my sentiments!

How unfortunate. The refs have a tough job though, their going to always get criticized in what calls they make that may cost the team the game. It just depends on how you look at it.

Tell me about it. I don't know why the injury bug decided to hit the NFL, and not just a little bit but HARD. It takes the fun out of the game and you don't get to watch some of the more entertaining players on both sides of the football. I am very sadened by the loss of D. Ryans, he is one of my fav. LB's and it's a shame Reggie Bush/J. Finley are out as well. I don't know who is next, but let's just hope it's not anybody worth mentioning.

this year seems about normal to me in the injury department ::shrug

Football is an aggressive sport. players get knocked out of EVERY game. Back in the day (the 80s), by beloved Redskins major asset was the fact that they were so damned redundant, they had two or three starter caliber players at every spot. the salary cap killed that strategy, and also highlighted it for what it was...

Tom Bradys or Joe Nameths or Dan Marinos get injured every season... it is a key part of teh game (to some extent "luck"), and doesn't seem to be exceptional this year to me

I know what you mean and all, but so far this year I don't believe there has been that franchise QB that's been out for the season. Sure, a couple have been in and out of the line up but that's nothing too major. I know players gets knocked around all the time and will obviously get hurt, but this year just seems a little worse than say...last year.

The poor Packers seem to have it worse than normal if you ask me. They are missing a LOT of their star players (2 of which I had on my fantasy team ). It's too bad, they had a great chance of making it to the Superbowl this year. They still have a chance since there's really no dominant team in the NFC now that Chicago and Atlanta look vulnerable, but their chances are obviously lower than they were.

It seemed like there was a lot of helmet-to-helmet hits yesterday. Most of them resulted in injuries, and Sam Bradford is very lucky he wasn't taken out. The NFL has to do something about those.

I think PI is PI, and the refs are going to call it. I didn't see the play yet, so not speaking about it in particular, but if the ref sees it, he should call it, regardless of the game situation.

Your idea about having a 15 yard penalty and then a spot foul is interesting, but the NFL has been moving in the opposite direction lately (like taking away the 5 yard face mask penalty). Subjectivity is a negative, according to the league. I don't really disagree with them.

I have to agree with you there, a penalty is a penalty regardless of the situation. Sure, calling it makes the refs look bad, but not calling it would do the same thing IMO.

The thing that I'm really starting to hate (it happened in the Chargers game yesterday) is refs missing a penalty call on 1 play (the helmet to helmet on Bradford) and then "making up for it" a few plays later by calling a penalty when it wasn't one. It really bothered me because I believe the helmet to helmet hit occured on 1st down, and the play was going nowhere anyways, and the penalty that they were called for came after a huge stop on 3rd and short close to the goal line, and they got a fresh set of downs because of it. I'm not complaining about this particular occurence because the Chargers didn't deserve to win the game anyway, but I've seen this over the years, not just in football but in other sports, and I really don't see what it accomplishes

man, that chiefs game was a heartbreaker yesterday. Up 10 with 7 min. left and i knew something bad was gonna happen lol, but i loved the effort, i didn't expect kansas city to win the game yesterday before it started but they had positioned themselves to pull it off.

It is very unfortunate for the Packers with so many injuries. It happens in the NFL and this will show if they have enough depth, heart & grit to still put up a fight once the playoffs come around.

I saw somewhere that they may begin to suspend players for those helmet-to-helmet hits you are referring to.

Man, that game was intense! I was watching it online and pulling for the Texans to pull it off, I didn't think they could do it. They cannot stop ANYBODY! It's frustrating but I gotta hand it to your Chiefs, they played hard and ran the ball very very effectively, kudos.

I was hoping for a Chiefs win, which would have given the Colts a share of first place in the division and a tie-breaker if necessary, but they can't score when they are behind. Baby steps for that offense right now. Kind of disheartening to fall apart on defense after four really good games, but the Texans have an explosive offense. And at the end of the day, the Chiefs are really an 8 or 9 win team, so the Texans should win those games if they want to have a seat at the Big Boys' Table.

Speaking of injuries, how about Vince Young & David Garrard both getting injured in last nights game? It continues...who is next? Stay tuned!

Laugh out loud at Harrison, he is so pissed off with the 75k fine that he is supposedly "conteplating retirement" hahaha! Athletes these days, anything to get on the news, I swear.

NFL Sunday comes to a close with the Packers beating the Vikings at home. Favre had a bad game with 3 picks and that's to be expected. He isn't getting any younger and I hope after this year he FINALLY calls it quits and gives the football over to T. Jackson, who I think can evolve into a Vick type of player if given enough starts and experience. I only watched the first half of this game and from what I saw, I enjoyed it. Both teams were going at each other on the offensive side of the ball and there wasn't much defense involved, just a ol' fashioned shootout, or atleast it was heading in that direction. Vikings drop to 2-4 and it looks like their schedule is only going to remain harder so they are in big trouble. Packers have lots of injuries and they look so so.

Raiders scoring 59 points on Denver at their own stadium was something to laugh about. McFadden had a hell of a game, 4 TD's, three on the ground and one receiving, kudos. Broncos, you don't know what your going to get out of them and you can tell they are missing Elvis Dumervil. Brian Dawkins isn't getting any younger as well, but their defense was non-existant, that's all I have to say about that game.

Let's give a round of applause to the Browns for handing it to the World Champs Saints, Four picks by Drew Brees, two of which were returned for a TD, by the same guy! Browns pounded it on the ground often and Saints had no way of stopping it. You can tell Saints are just missing Reggie Bush & Pierre Thomas, they have no running game what so ever and they have become one dimensional.

The Steelers/Dolphins game was a good one. I question that last call giving Pittsburgh the ball back after Ben fumbled it, but that's how the NFL goes. Steelers defense didn't look all that in this one, but I am sure they won't have many games where teams put up 20 points on them.

The Patriots sure look good, sitting at 5-1 while the Chargers are headed down a steep snowy hill and they can't stop. Their schedule is going to get tough as well and they are clearly missing Vincent Jackson, I don't care what anybody says.

What a sloppy game by the Redskins/Bears. Jay Cutler should buy DeAngelo Hall a new car or something for making him his new best friend, 4 ints, one pick six. Hahaha! Nuff' said.

Seattle and Chiefs are clearly a better team at home than on the road. Both sitting at 4-2, along with the Tampa Bay Bucs who pulled out the one point victory. Crazy how things work out.

The Titans look very good as well. They are going to be a very dangerous team come December, they have QB depth, good pass rush and are slowly starting to get it together in the passing game as well. Look out for those Titans. Kudos to Kenny Britt by the way, hell of a game!

The 49ers are just what they are...not very good. They were nice enough to atleast give Carolina their first victory of the year so bravo San Fran.

Gotta hand it to the Bills for hanging in there with the Ravens all the way up to OT, unfortunately that's where it ended. Ravens D was disappointing today, 34 points to the Bills? A win is a win I guess.

One game remaining on the schedule for Week 7, Monday night affair with the Boys/Giants, should be a fun and intense game.

That Steelers call was pure chicken****. But whatever.

Not thrilled with the Pats down the stretch as that onside kick should have been seen a mile away. Hopefully Chung is back soon because as soon as he left the middle of the field really opened up (I know part of that was strategic, but still). The Chargers have to be the stupidest team in the league. They really should have won had they not made some of the dumbest mistakes I've ever seen. But hey, as the Ravens and Steelers fans will say this week, a win is a win so I'll take it.

the steelers seem to get handed more crucial gifts than all other teams teams combined, recently.

(going back to, and including, the refs GIVING them that superbowl against Seattle)

I am not claiming a conspiracy, or anyhting... but i used to vauguely root for them (my father-in-law hails from there) and i am finding it harder and harder to do so.

Was thinking the very same thing.

I never had anything against the Steelers but the ref gifts have gotten annoying along with their towel waving fans that are like Raider-fans East.

...well their knucklehead QB annoys me too.

eta: pointed out on Yahoo that the ref that made this call is a Pittsburgh native.

Even if the refs have given the Steelers their fair share of calls, I think that might be because that's a very popular franchise and they always need to be winning. When their not, people wonder well what's wrong with them this year? Overall though, I don't think it's too much of a conspiracy, yes, every sport has some teams that the owners want to win more than others, but NFL is one of the main sports where you can't say that refs gamble on teams and make calls based on what team they want to win. There are always questionable calls, I feel most of them are pretty fair, that's why the NFL is obviously a more "fair" sport, to put in kind words, where as the NBA, you know the Lakers always get things gift wrapped, teams now can get three superstars on a team, you never see a team out of no where "sneak" up on people and go to the NBA Finals, matter fact win it. Where as in the NFL, it seems almost every year there is a new team in the Superbowl, which mixes things up and keeps people watching year in and year out.

Please make no mistake, I don't think there is any conspiracy here, though the Superbowl vs. Seattle was most definitely called one sided.

I was just noting that mcsluggo wasn't the only one who first thought of that SB after the call yesterday. And that call was 100% gutless BS.
