Jersey Patches Allowed Next Season

One of the things which came out of the meeting today is that a 2" by 2" patch for advertising will be allowed next year. Adam Silver is quoted as saying it could bring in as much as 100M per year for a team. From what I know about Euro soccer where advertising for jersey(shirt) sponsors is the norm, a lot of money can be made.

Not sure where exactly this should go. Not related to the arena or personnel moves, yet is still related to us, and I think makes it even tougher for the Maloofs to say they can't make money in Sac, with jersey advertising and revenue sharing now on the table.

An extremely conservative estimate, would be if team like LA and NY can approach the 100M mark per year for jersey advertising, maybe we can get 35-40M in the next year or two. I think estimates of the cut of revenue sharing we'd receive are around 20M, if not a little more. Well that conservatively could mean the Maloofs could now get 55M more in revenue per year than they could last year, or any years prior. Makes the case for leaving because you can't make money here a tougher sell.

John Schuhmann: 2" x 2" patch (advertising) on shoulder of jersey being discussed for next season. Teams are "excited" about it, according to Adam Silver.

Ken Berger: Silver says guidelines on jersey ads would be in effect for next season, but the ads wouldn't appear on jerseys until the following season.

Ken Berger: Silver says his sense is that every team is in favor of jersey ads in some form.

Ken Berger: Silver says it's very difficult to project, but believes teams could generate $100 million per year through jersey ads.

Oh goody. Once the camel gets its nose into the tent... I can see it in a couple of years when the team jersey ends up looking like NASCAR. What scares me is what kind of sponsorships the Maloofs will come up with. Cialis anyone?

Hopefully the NBA has creative control over their brand. The maloofs will run it into the ground if they don't.

I understand the business aspects behind this, but, as a fan, I absolutely HATE it. It was one thing when they started naming arenas and stadiums, but ads on the uniforms just take it to an unbearable level for me. I'm ok with ads scattered around the inside of the arena, but once it intrudes on the uniform and equipment (outside of the manufacturers name) it becomes professional sports sacrilege, IMO.

What's next? Will there be McDonald's and Sprite logos on the game ball?

I am not totally against it, as long as it's controlled. Here in Australia all our national sporting code have this sort of sponsorship and to be honest i don't really notice it when I'm watching a game. Yeah it's there but the jersey colours are still the same and that's what matters. The below are examples from our AFL (e.g. small logos on front & larger on the back):

C'mon mate! You could have used a better team at least! :D :p

In the AFL, the advertising on guernsey's ands shorts is fairly controlled. It's reserved for a smaller logo on the right side of the chest and below the number on the back. It also allowed on shorts on the from right (as per photo above).

It still makes the guernsey and shorts look respectable and "flooded" with advertising everywhere!

meh. when you're used to whole teams being bought and named after corporations, a patch seems rather irrelevant. especially considering that I can't think of a single pro team here in Europe that doesn't have something on their jersey. the concern over what sponsor the Maloofs will be able to land is valid, though. another Power Balance debacle would be too much.

I seriously doubt teams can generate $100 million for shoulder ads alone. Even arena naming rights for NY & LA don't come close to $100 mil a year. Maybe he meant $100 million for all 30 teams combined.

Isn't this just one more way for the rich to get richer? LA and New York will have companies lining up to get their logo seen in those media markets while Sacramento is going to struggle to find willing sponsors.

Yes. At least their luxury tax hit will not be painful. It is ironic that the teams that have the least need of extra income will make the most extra income. Kind of a cultural thing, I guess.

this is SO LAME. i seriously hate this idea. plus we all know its going to go from a 2x2 size to a giant one eventually. imagine those famous pics of MJ dunking, and now imagine those pics with a giant McDonalds logo on the jersey. i will NEVER buy an NBA jersey again. and i have like 20 so thats saying alot. im assuming in not the only one. i think jersey sales will go down big

Yes, that's the figure I saw in a different article - $100M is for all teams combined.

Okay, answer on patches on jerseys sold to fans is that they haven't even started discussing it yet since it doesn't take place until 2013/2014.

Thanks.

So when it says "next season" it means the one after the next season.

Yep, don't see an issue with fans wearing the jersey with the ad. It's only a small patch. Nobody even takes any notice of it with football. It's doing far more good for the club than harm.

Hmm, I wonder if jerseys for sale will have advertising on them? Not sure that makes sense.
If they're smart, they'll give us the option buy a jersey without the patch but maybe make it cost a little more. Keep your dignity intact but it'll cost you an extra 10 bucks or so.
